Originally posted by Whitesides: Don't compare it. Its not worth the effort. Just know that if it has been compressed using some sort of software to make the file size smaller - you're missing audio quality. It's a fact of life, whether you can hear it or not.
As for having files sent on CD. There's really no reason to send WAV files via CD if you have an internet connection. Why wasted the plastic? There is no difference between a WAV file burned on a CD or a WAV file transfered via FTP. The only difference is you don't spend money on the postage and you don't waste a CD-r.
I've recently released to singles of cover songs. One is "Cruel To Be Kind" and the other is "Ain't No Sunshine". Both of them have never been pressed to CD. Both were entirely recorded and mixed in one computer, then FTP'd to the mastering guy, who then FTP'd the finished product back. Once I approved it, it got FTP'd to iTunes and never touched a CD. I don't ever plan on putting them on CD. In fact, if there comes a time when I do more covers (outside of a christmast thing), I will not likely ever press them to CD.
The only time you want a CD or DVD is when you get the master backup of all the tracking files and the mix. So that you can take them to another studio or back to the studio to make changes or tweaks.

Jody, what are FTP's?I've heard the term before but I must confess I don't know what they are.Remember,I am on dialup,I can receive wav but it will take forever to down load and take up more space than I have in my email. What makes FTP's different? Do you need a special program to receive them?I'm showing my lack of computer knowledge here, I'm a old fart that didn't know how to turn one on a few years ago.I'm learning as I go but it's hard to teach an old dog new tricks. "Defeatist Pessimists and Rose Colored Glasses Optimists are lonely companions, victims even. Both ideologies imply predestined outcomes, and therefore breed inactivity in its victims. Inaction is the only sure way to lose at anything in life. All positive action guarantees at least a fighting chance." -Brian Austin Whitney
