The actual Suno copyright situation (as of 2024–2025 for PAID members)
Suno’s official Terms of Use say:
1️⃣ You own your lyrics.
If you wrote the words, they’re yours. Period.
2️⃣ You own your melody if you created it outside of Suno (humming, singing, sheet music, etc.).
BUT — there’s a nuance:
3️⃣ Suno owns the audio output that the system generates.
This is where people get confused.
You own the creative content (lyrics, melody, composition).
Suno owns the rendered audio performance because their AI engine generated it.
This does NOT mean Suno owns your song.
It means:
• You own the song
• Suno owns the recording of the song that their system outputs
Exactly like:
• You can write a song
• A friend records it in their studio
• You own the song
• They own the specific recording file unless you have a contract
This is why Suno commercially licenses the track to you royalty-free. They aren’t trying to steal your song. They’re just protecting themselves by owning the machine-made recording.
⸻
⭐ What can YOU do with your Suno-generated track?
You can:
• Release it on streaming platforms
• Sell it
• Post it
• Monetize it
• Use it in ads
And Suno can’t stop you.
The only exception:
You can’t claim that you created every part of the audio performance manually because the AI generated the instrumentation and vocals.
This protects them, not hurts you.
⸻
The truth is:
✔ You own the song
✔ You own the lyrics
✔ You own the melody
✔ You can monetize it
❌ You don’t own Suno’s generated performance audio (the .mp3)
✔ But Suno licenses the audio to you in a way that gives you full commercial use
You’re safe. Your music is yours.
