Here's a little retelling of the Goldilocks story that I revised a few years ago. Please let me know what you think of it.
Goldilocks and the Three Bears Original by (c) Robert Southey Revision by (c) Mike Carroll
One day, far, far away, on a planet called Earth, far before our virtual universe, and way before microwave ovens, and color television, but long after the invention of the wheel, there was a girl, and she was known as the girl going by the name of Goldilocks.
Now, Goldilocks lived on a continent full of forest and she liked to hike in the forest. One day as she was out on a hike she walked up upon a little wooden house in the forest. She knocked on the door but no one answered. As she knocked though, the door slightly opened and Goldilocks smelled something very good to eat. Goldilocks could not resist the temptation to step in the house to have a look around.
As Goldilocks looked around she saw three pictures on the wall. One picture was of a papa bear, one picture was of a mamma bear, and the third picture was of a baby bear. Goldilocks softly called out, “Hello, is anyone home?”, but there was no answer.
At the kitchen table, Goldilocks saw that there were three bowls of porridge. She took a taste of the bowl of porridge that was closest to the open window and it was very cold. She had a taste of the porridge in the bowl on the other side of the table but it was very hot. She had a taste of the bowl of porridge that was in the middle of the table and it was perfect. Goldilocks could not resist eating it all up and so she did.
In the next room, Goldilocks saw that there were three chairs. She sat in one chair but it was much too big for her. She tried the second chair and found it still just a little too large. The third chair though, was just a perfect fit for her and so Goldilocks rested for a few moments in the chair, but then one of the legs of the chair broke and Goldilocks fell to the floor.
Goldilocks got up from the floor and walked up the stairs to the sleeping room. She saw three beds there. She lay down on one bed but found it was much to hard. The second bed was much too soft. Goldilocks tried the third bed and it was just right and so she pulled over the covers and fell asleep.
As Goldilocks was sleeping, the three bears came home from their little hike in the forest. When Papa Bear saw that the front door was left open he asked, “Alright now, which one of us left the door open?”
Mama bear said, “Oh no, not again, did you do that again Baby Bear?”
“No”, said Baby Bear, “at least I don’t think I did.”
“Oh well, lets eat”, said Papa Bear. And so they went into the kitchen to eat.
When they got into the kitchen Papa Bear stopped and spoke, “It looks like someone has tasted my porridge”.
Mamma Bear then looked at her bowl of porridge and replied, “It looks like someone has tasted my porridge also”.
Baby Bear then spoke, “Look, someone has eaten all of my porridge.”
The three bears then went into the next room and Papa Bear said, “It looks like someone has been sitting in my chair.”
Mamma Bear spoke out, “I think someone has been sitting in my chair also.”
Baby Bear said, “Look, someone has been sitting in my chair and they broke the leg of my chair.”
So, the three bears went upstairs to have a look around.
Papa Bear commented, “Someone has ruffled the blankets of my bed.”
“And someone has ruffled the blankets of my bed also”, said Mamma Bear.
“And look”, said Baby Bear, “there is someone sleeping in my bed”. Then Baby Bear saw who it was and continued speaking, “and look, look, it’s that Goldilocks girl again.”
Goldilocks was so tired that she slept through all of the commotion of the three bears.
Mamma Bear said, “Well, let’s let her sleep and lets go downstairs and share the remaining porridge.”
Once downstairs and at the table eating their remaining porridge, Baby Bear spoke, “Papa, why don’t we just build her her own bed and we could build her her own chair also for when she visits?”
“Oh, nice thought, and”, said Mamma Bear, “we could also leave an extra bowl of porridge for her on the table right next to where you sit, Baby Bear.” “Oh, Papa, can we, can we?” said Baby Bear.
“That sounds like a great idea Baby Bear,” said Papa Bear, “otherwise, every time we get home it just seems like it’s going to be the same story every time she comes to visit, over and over.”
Then, as Papa Bear finished his porridge, he leaned back in his chair and, “snap”, one of the legs to his chair broke. “Whoops”, said Papa Bear, “I guess I better fix that leg on my chair again.”
And that is the story of the girl, the girl who is still known now as the girl going by the name of Goldilocks, and that is also The Story of Those Three Bears, in that mysterious forest, all from that mysterious third planet, in that mysterious solar system, in that mysterious galaxy, in that mysterious time, way, way, way, way far away.
