I was in the front yard
Buildin’ a soap box car with my old man
Two guys with badges pulled up in a tan sedan
They asked my dad some questions but his alibi was airtight
He was nowhere near the docks on Friday night

He spoke politely, shook their hands n said, “Listen,

That life had a hold on me
But now I’m fin’lly free
A clean life has just begun,
I’m getting’ to know my son
And a new dawn has risen
So, I’ll be straight with you
The last thing I wanna do
Is go back to prison”

I was on my porch swing sippin’ seltzer water
Readin’ my old Scofield King James
Two guys pulled up in a junker
And my liver stilled recalled their names
They invited me to a party
Said they hadn’t seen me in months
They’d heard I’d changed
But it wouldn’t hurt to let loose just once

I shook my head, held my Bible up and said, “Listen

Whiskey had a hold on me
But now I’m fin’lly free
The real life’s just begun,
I’m getting’ to know the Son
