Rihanna’s new single “Bitch Better Have My Money” came under fire last week when multiple sites suggested that it sounds a little too similar to Just Brittany’s 2014 bop “Betta Have My Money.” The R8 diva refused to comment on the ensuing controversy, but Bibi Bourelly — one of the track’s four credited songwriters — (kind of) addressed the plagiarism claims in an interview with Vibe.

“It’s like you dedicate [your] entire life to something, you know?,” the 20-year-old stated. “You fight for something and actually put the work in, and sacrifice time, like your parents told you to do in order to be ‘successful,’ just so when you finally reach a victory and it’s time to celebrate, some obstacle is there to pull you back down again.” While it’s unfortunate that copyright infringement ruined Bibi’s moment, the Moroccan/Haitian songwriter doesn’t actually address the similarities between the tracks. Instead, she simply laments: “That’s life, I guess.”

Not that the Berlin-based hitmaker is letting the drama bring her down. “I don’t want to bash anybody or be bitter or mean, I just want to be able to celebrate our victory,” Bibi continued. “A lot of things change when one is granted success, random people pop up, and a lot of the adjustments are rough. My way of coping with them is through focusing on the things that I have accomplished and the things that are yet to come.”
