R&M: Measure the distance between the tuners and then measure the distance between a strat and tele's... My bet is they are the same and you could always buy a set of Fender replacement tuners and most likely solve some of the tuning problem.
Fact is that most inexpensive guitars all have tuning problems.
PS: Are you sure it's the pick-ups and not the switches or capacitors?
