Well, Alan proved you didn't have to follow a format, trend or lyrical roadmap to have hits. He was completely original. And he was also a #1 artists, as a balding, short little guy right in the middle of his life. So he's proof that you CAN be an original and do it against all odds and all marketing rules.
There are some very interesting artists out there selling well and making original music of late. I think having the tool and distribution of music to the world at everyone's fingertips will lead to all sorts of opportunities for those who stop thinking about following someone else's rules and just makes art.
