Hi Jan and Roger! Well, I would definitely say that you two have captured the essence of the typical teenage attitude! Very nice lyric and I don't have any nits with this one. Well done! Heather

Dottie...thanks so much for checking this one out. We do have a melody in mind, so hopefully soon you will be able to hear it.
We're so glad that the verses seem to be transitioning well into the chorus....very glad to hear that.
We always appreciate your time and comments, Dottie.

Well....I have raised a few teen-agers and I know a whole lot of them right now, as well. Thanks for thinking that we captured the rebelliousness and head strong ideas they sometimes have.
We were really trying to show that coming back to your beginnings is usually a healing sort of thing. Happens to all of us, I guess.
Thanks so much for reading this one over for us, Heather. It is always appreciated so much.

Hi Roger,
Mama always taught us kids the Golden Rule Do GOOD unto others, it’ll get you through ("do well to others" is grammatically incorrect) She’d go down HER list, every now and then (She had a list she'd go down) SAID what WAS expected…. AND thought I was listenin' Verse 2 My teen years put her patience to the test A stubborn kid, I knew what worked the best At seventeen I just walked away Still remember how she looked at me that day…. when I was… REVISED CHORUS Breakin’ My Mama’s Rules Leavin’ her behind and leavin’ school Standin’ in the driveway… with my suitcase in my hand Her heart was Breakin’…. COULDN'T make her understand BREAKIN MAMA'S RULES
Original chorus Standin’ in the driveway… with my suitcase in my hand Nothin’ that I’d say…. Could make her understand Leavin’ her behind and leavin’ school Her heart was Breakin’…..while I was Breakin’… Breakin’ My Mama’s Rules

Hi Terry....thanks so much for giving this a read and offering some good suggestions, but the thing is....we do have a melody for this one in the making that seems to be working, so that your current suggs. would be fine, but wouldn't meter at all with the way that I am singing and playing it. Of course, you didn't know that it is about ready to go to the song stage. We really appreciate that you took the time to read it over for us though...we really do.

Well-Chosen Words of Wisdom...heh! Lemmie Mess Wit 'Em, KOS:
V1: Mom taught us kids The Golden Rule "Do Well to Others", It'll get you through She'd go down her list, every now-&-then All Her Expectations.."WAS I LISTENIN'?"...&
V2: My Teen Years put her to the test As a Stubborn Kid, I knew what-worked-best Seventeen..said "I'm gonna walk-away" Can't forget how she looked at me that day..
(CH) I was Standin' In The Driveway..Suitcase in my hand Told her I was leavin' 'cuz I had bigger plans Leavin' her behind, (&) also leavin' school Her heart was achin' while I was breakin' Breakin' Mama's Rules--
Well, the Big World was Crueller than I'd believed I was just another kid with a cardboard sign..on the streets Thoughts of home were all that pulled me through Winter-after-Winter since 1982...

Your Bridge is Mightyfine.

I will give the thumbs up for this Janice and Roger.
Nice story and tild well.
My only nit would be the line
'Do well unto others, it’ll get you through'
The saying is
'Do unto others, it’ll get you through'
I think most would understand the meaning is to do with the actual saying
'Do unto others, as you would have done unto you. which means that
'Do unto others', implys a good deed anyway.
Maybe I being tooo hard here. I like it fine.
God Bless Roy and Helen

Hi Roger and Jan,
Good song! we all have our differences of how we hear it, here's my quicky, something like this thoughs-- personal preference. Keep anything that helps!
Verse 1
Mama always taught us the Golden Rule Do unto others, will get you through When she went down her list of expectation I heard her words occasionally really listened Verse 2 My youth put mama's patience to the test I was a stubborn kid, who knew what was best At seventeen I took to the street I can't forget the looked when she saw me….
Chorus: Standin’ in the driveway… suitcase in hand Nothin’ I could say would make her make her understand She had hopes and plans, I was leavin’ school Her heart was Breakin’…..while I was Breakin’… Breakin’ Mama’s Rules Verse 3: Here in this big bad world , mama's my relief No one even notices me hungry on these streets Thoughts of home's the thing that get's me by I think back to "82" on these cold nights, when I
Chorus
Stood in the driveway… suitcase in hand Nothin’ I could say would make her make her understand She had hopes and plans, I was leavin’ school Her heart was Breakin’…..while I was Breakin’… Breakin’ Mama’s Rules
Bridge: When I called Mama…..she asked…when ya’ comin’ home Love wasn't a question to her boy of twenty-one I Thanked God I found her simple ways again Life sure wasn't like…. I…. planned……
Chorus
Standin’ in the driveway… suitcase in hand Nothin’ I could say would make her make her understand She had hopes and plans, I was leavin’ school Her heart was Breakin’…..while I was Breakin’… Breakin’ Mama’s Rules

Hi Roy...yeah, that line has been a bit of a sticking point with several folks. I think that I was just needing an extra syl there, for the melody that I have been working on for this.....or maybe just trying to twist it and say a bit differently.
I am glad that you gave it a read for us and really appreciate that thumbs up.
Hope all is going well for you.

A straight-forward message. It is definitely relatable and we've all been there. Some may not be as intense, for example, one may talk back in a disrespectful manner vice running away. The two actions differ, but will cause you to look back and possibly regret the behavior. Nonetheless, it is a part of growing up. So long as we have an opportunity to right our wrongs, helps to lighten the load...

Geneva....thanks for all of the fine suggestions....some may work and some may not, because of the melody that I am hearing with this one. But, you always give us new ways to look at things and we surely appreciate that you take the time to stop by and give us some great help. It is so appreciated...always.

Hey Jan and Roger...
It's funny as we grow older our parents wisdom seems to grow with the coming of years. Nice work.

Wanted to pay my respects on this collab. The comments/suggestions you have received are great. I have no "nits" what so ever and can see the merit in all the "re-write" from other memebers.
Great Job!

Hi You Two,
Another nice, well thought out lyric. Two of my favorite sayings are "I knew it all when I was 16 but I forgot most of it" and "The older I get the wiser my parents were". This song follows them well. Good luck with the musicating.

Hi Sabrinao....we are glad that you weighed in on this lyric...and so happy that you gave us some more insight into those teen, rebellious years. Alot of us can relate....because of our own past behavior or that of our children, at times....to a lesser or greater extent.
We thank you for seeing it as a piece that many may relate to.

Thanks Doug...Yes, we will be looking intently at all of the suggestions, before we go to a rewrite. My esteemed co-writer is on a business trip to Orlando right now. When he gets back in a few days, please watch for a bit of a rewrite.
Thanks Doug....and also for the encouragement.

Hi Roy,
Thanks for taking time to go over this one. I'm glad you liked it for the most part. As far as the do unto others saying--it was a bit of a play on the words--hoping it's nothing major though. Take care, Roger
