I have to admit that I don't see a lot of appeal in the give-and-take support of colleagues. It really doesn't do a lot for anyone career-wise, especially when the support is not attracted so much as solicited. Fellow musicians are just not the kind of fans that will put food on your table.

I DO see the appeal in getting their feedback...but that's what THIS place does best.

In my view, you have to get off the ground by appealing to music listeners, and they mainly find out about you when you play in venues or when they hear you on the radio. I say start local--either play out and build an audience, or do everything you can to get local radio attention--mom-and-pop stations with local music programming. Unless we have what it takes to succeed on that level, the online support of fellow musicians will mainly be valuable to alleviate artistic loneliness. And that's just fine, of course!...just not a real career boost.

I hope I wasn't the one that started this whole discussion. I noticed that everyone started talking about all this right after I posted my Facebook and YouTube links. tongue smile

I like supporting my fellow musicians because I enjoy seeing what other people are doing, and really, I only click the "Subscribe" or "Like" button if I really honest to God like that person's music. I take the time to listen. I don't just fan for the sake of fanning (half the musicians on ReverbNation who "fan" me but are from completely different genres like rap or screamo, I'm looking at you).

Besides, you don't have to support other musicians by necessarily buying their stuff to help them "put food on the table." Even just a constructive comment that would help that other person improve their music, or even a genuinely nice comment ("wow, that song [insert song title] sounds really good and it touched me deeply. Thanks for sharing") can be enough. Especially if other potential fans cruising by your page see a comment like that. 9 times out of 10, if I see a comment like that on someone's page, I'd be inclined to give their music a listen because that comment shows me that someone else likes their stuff, so I might like it too. I consider that support. Of course, selling albums are nice smile but I consider comments to be just as good.

But that's just me, I guess. smile Wanted to add my two cents.

I'm also not into comment for a comment and I'd rather had 10 comments which mean what they say then 100s comments saying
"nice" "brilliant" or something along these lines.
Support is very important but only meaningful. I was watching a video the other day. There was no music, no story, just a little episode from everyone's life. Nothing really to talk about. To my surprised there were very many comments including:
How most amazing, how fantastic, how brilliant your video is. What a great use of camera...
The video later was deleted LOL. Just tells you that probably even the person who uploaded it knew that there was absolutely nothing worth showing. May be they just conducted an experiment of uploading a random video and seeing how many comments they'll receive saying how most wonderful and amazing they video was...

You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden.

17 year old country singer/songwriter from the Deep South... of England. I love most everything.

I don't have a facebook page cause from what I seen of it, I don't think it would benefit me personally. Plus being a lyricist youtube doesn't really help either.

However 2 artists who have done recordings using my lyrics have the said songs on youtube, have a look if you care too.

I'm a lyricist with original lyrics available for all recording purposes, open to collaboration so if interested please see my website.
