The Psychiatric Hallway
© words and music by C. Stewart ( April 5, 2012 )

It's time for his appointment
Walks down that narrow hall
Sad pictures starring back at him
He's familiar with them all

There's a dozen different story's
But none of the patients smile
Just goofballs in an eight by ten
That went crazy for a while

CHORUS...
Down the Psychiatric Hallway
The pathway to his mind
Down the Psychiatric Hallway
The pathway to his mind

Twenty seven coins in every pocket
A total of one o eight
He loves the indian rhythm
That the buffalo nickles make

CHORUS...
Down the Psychiatric Hallway
The pathway to his mind
Down the Psychiatric Hallway
The pathway to his mind

Down the Psychiatric Hallway
I wonder what they'll find

Hi Calvin,

This is really good writing! Wow talk about out of the box! I love, love, love this;

He loves the indian rhythm
That the buffalo nickles make This is great writing!!!

I love what you did at the end and when I heard it I thought maybe the chorus should be;

CHORUS...
Down the Psychiatric Hallway
The pathway to his mind
Down the Psychiatric Hallway
I wonder what they'll find This line just makes it so profound! smile

This is my favorite of your songs. smile

I Like the somber tone juxtaposed with the "goofballs/fruitcakes.
I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. I was in a place like that for two days a few years ago and you have it pegged pretty well. I was undergoing electro cunvulsive treatment for depression. You portray the patients I was with well.

Love the second and third verses Calvin...

This is a real good one, I like what Dottie said about the chorus, but all in all, this really paints a picture and takes the listener somewhere!

Interesting how you portrayed that Calvin. Must have been influenced by coo coo's nest.

I certainly hope this is not how people feel walking down the hallway to see me.

Just had to comment that sometimes the people who seem to be the most abnormal are not that much different on the inside than others.

LET ME IMAGINE--THAT WAS ME IN THE HALLWAY--WOULD I HAVE TO COME BACK OR WOULD I BE FREE AGAIN--LEAVING THE MAZE, SO TO SPEAK--IT COULD HAVE BEEN ME IN THAT HALL--I LIKE IT!

WRITE ON--

H Doug,

ahhh glad you got to hear this, I wondered what YOU might think considering you deal with this stuff.
Well, I've seen coo coo's nest MANY years ago but really don't remember ANY of it, so not real sure what caused THIS song, it just sort of poured out of me.
Sounds like you have a VERY interesting job, I can aonly imagine your day.

Thanks for taking the time to listen.

Cool and crazy one, Calvin!

I like the positive message that makes us think that the endearing goofballs got better -- they were just crazy for a while! Aren't we all!

Hi Cal,

"just goofballs in an 8 by 10"...

"fruitcakes..."

LOLOL...

The indian rhythm doesn't have to mean that he hears something that's not there...which is creepy...BUT...even creepier, is he takes out the coins, and slowly lets them fall from one hand to another...ewwww...

great tune, it actually does musically what the lyric does...I like that...

My first nit on one of your songs, Calvin.

It's too short.

This should be one of those Dylan type 5, 6 or 7 verse songs, that go on and on.
Like "you gotta serve somebody".

The heavily panned backing vocals... very effective.

I really dig the cool guitar work.

Hello Mister Nelson,

Last thing a guy wants to hear is...It's Too Short ( good hook )
Not sure if I have enough cool lines in me for 6-7 verses :-)
Glad you liked whats going on here, THANK YOU for your kind words.

The use of the talking in the background is very effective. Interesting lines, and yeah, the buffalo nickles one stands out for sure. It is this attention to interesting details that make some songs work. Good one.

Calvin,

Cool song! I could hear this playing in the background of a suspense or horror film. It has a very ominous vibe. Liked it!

As I sit in the hallway I wonder, can I have my fruitcake and eat it to... Is a fruitcake eating fruitcake self absorbed, perhaps cannibalism, or maybe just a snack...

This sounds like something Calvin would write grin

Yes, but only in the privacy of your own home :-)

I'm trying to figure out if the main character is a patient or the shrink grin

Works either way, I suppose smile

Very cool, Calvin. Love the panned voices - a perfect fit smile

Hey Calvin,

I think I mentioned to you on FB that I had enjoyed this one, but I wanted to the same here on JPF. I've always loved your low register, so the vocal on this is very appealing to me. Of course, the lyric is very compelling as well....lots of neat juxtapositions.

Thanks a bunch for sharing this one.

xo,
Beth

Excuse me... pardon me... don't mind me folks...

Just stopped by for another listen.

The bass is subtle but right on point.

Just a creatively effective use of panning through out.

Way to go, Calvin

This is a delight, Calvin. smile Lines 3&4 in verse 2 made me laugh out loud, but with an ache in the heart at the same time.

Wonderful coin imagery as well.
