Live from our new studio complete with blankets tacked to the walls and mom's old kitchen chairs. We did this without a click track, which was probably an error. This is our first attempt at multi track recording. I did the mixing on my little Tascam dp008. "Uncle Loren" helped us out on dobro. This is for a demo for festivals & I guess we'll try to do better recordings later.

I'm especially open to any mixing/mastering critiques & tips.

Thanks!

Hey Kevin...

Good to see/hear this one over here at JPF. Loved it when I heard it over at The Ramp. Still loving it! Like I said then...sounds great as is...I don't think you needed a click track. As far as mixing, my only thoughts are: 1. give the tracks a little more separation...that "pan" knob won't hurt you!!! 2. perhaps add just a slight bit of higher EQ to the bass line..acoustic basses are always difficult for me to mix. But, I have found that by trimming under 30hz and adding a little extra, not much, at the 175hz - 200hz point helps with the "booming;' affect most acoustic basses generate. Just a thought or two for whatever they may be worth...

Sure do lik ethis one!!! Best of luck with it... Al

I enjoyed it. I am no one to comment on the technicalities. I just liked it.

Wow! Thanks Al for your technical input. Working on a deadline so I don't have time to remix before submitting. But we have more recording to do. From now on I'm thinking I should send each track into audacity for mixing there on the computer. I didn't eq each track. I've been playing with the pan knobs and it does make a huge diff. Not sure what to do with bass, so I leave it out front. I cloned the lead vocal which was a big help to get fatter vocals.

Very cool advice, however I'm pretty tech illiterate. I don't know a hz when I see one. But when I come across one on my bass track I'll tell him what you said!

Amen to that Kevin. It all goes over my head, as well.
How many guitar tracks are there?

Like I said before this is a smoker of a tune. The musicianship is astonishing, as are those sweet harmonies.
The arrangement is just beautifully airy allowing everyone to shine, just brilliant, Kevin.
I'm sure you'll be asked to play plenty festivals in the coming years.

Hey Kevin,

That's a real catchy tune mate. Humming away here........

To my ears, it's all sounding well balanced, and for a live recording on a small setup, it's pretty darn good. My only comment would be to just give the lead vocal a little nudge higher in the beginning. Otherwise, as a submission for festivals, it's nearly spot on the money.

Damn. Now I can't forget what a long way it is to Winslow ! grin

cheers, niteshift

Still like it, great song and arrangement. I'd like to see the lead vocal out front a bit more and trim some of the high end eq off the vocal, just a smidge. Banjo solo is about right level, but it takes away from the vocal and the backing vocal is a bit loud. Just my opinion. Dobro could come up a bit. smile
