The 42,000 number is interesting!
Most of the folks I know here are on the top 100 posters list. If there were 42,000 submissions for the awards, the awards would seem to be statistically separate from this community and vice versa.
Ain't that the truth! It's hard to remember sometimes, but given the size of JPF membership, I'd be surprised if even 1% post on the forum. The truth is, most working musicians are too busy to keep up with a message board like this. As valuable as online critiques can be, there is nothing more valuable to me than the kind of feedback you get on-the-spot from other people--be they audiences, collaborators, recording engineers, sound board operators, bar owners or kids. most of Us posters -- have day jobs or work at home and access to our computers to check in -- or are unemployed and can be here.... : ) 42ooo CDs now there's a Library of Free music !

Actually I have roughly 60K CDs here but not that many of them from last awards. Last awards we did primarily via digital files. Only 10K came in via CD. There's already 1000 new CD's here and I have no idea when the next awards will be based on my health. But we hang on to CD's until the next awards so folks can send them in and get in line early.
When we do Roadtrips (also on hold for now) I am often disappointed that even the most active folks we have here don't come out even in their own home towns. Or when they do, often they sit in a corner and chat with each other rather than mix with everyone else. (And no, I don't mean everyone.. our last Nashville showcase had a nice mix of folks from the board and our regular Roadtrip attendees for example). I am also surprised that often board members don't enter the JPF awards. One year I was criticized that no board members were nominated in the awards. I had to break it to that person that none of those she pointed out had even entered.
Some people like message boards, but the vast majority don't. The 18K members registered here are a subset of musicians who will use a board, but a large % aren't music awards entrants, Roadtrip participants, Showcase performers, Chapter members or even officially signed up to be JPF members (meaning they don't get the Just Plain Notes email newsletter). I happen to be a person who enjoys message boards and the ability to bring up a topic on my mind. But since we started, sites like MySpace and Facebook and Twitter have done 2 things. One, it's attracted more folks to get on line to communicate, but two, it's taken up the time everyone of all types have to be on line doing anything at all.
Now it's even tougher to get active artists and songwriters and industry folks to spend time here. But I try hard to keep this as a good place to get honest info, safe places to network with musicians without getting flamed by trolls and a fair place that tries hard to treat people fairly when there's conflicts and remove those who gratuitously attack or offend. I've made some great friends here and kept up to date with a broad though unique swath of our members. I travel so I can meet another subsection. I do industry panel events so I can share what I've learned and meet another subsection. I do showcases so I can meet (and hear and see live) another big portion of the group and I do the music awards to get the largest base to participate and so we can recognize the great and diverse music made by our community and I send the newsletter out to over 50,000 members hoping to catch a large chunk of them with some positive and helpful information.
The point of me asking the question that is the subject of this post was first and foremost so I could here some of the best liked music being made by this particular subsection of JPF. It was also a chance for folks to give some praise to some of their peers who made music they really thought was worth some attention. The fact that 100% of the regulars on this MP3 board wouldn't jump at the chance to bring some positive attention to the music here on this board this year means either there just wasn't any good music so they simply could not find anything worth submitting OR they couldn't be bothered to help a peer and fellow board member. I've listened to all the music so far listed through the first dozen or so respondents. I heard 2 brilliant ideas that need work but are really excellent and fresh ideas and a couple really solid songs that stuck with me after only one listen which isn't hard to do. I really hoped that there would be at least 50 people here who were engaged enough to promote the music of their peers. I see some only promoted themselves. Since I didn't say that was banned I am not eliminating those, though I count the support of peers more than self promotion, but at least those folks cared about their music enough to put it out there.
So, before I shut this part down, I'll restate the request: Please post the 5 best songs you heard this year that were posted in 2010. That way the excuse that you haven't heard 100% of the songs is irrelevent. (And for my purpose, it really IS irrelevant).

Okay...we have 22 people who have posted at least partial lists. I am just going to cut this. If you didn't have at least 5, then I won't count yours. If you posted over 5, I will accept the first 5 only. Mark has offered to help me tally the entire number. We'll list 2 things, the songs with the most points (5 for first down to 1 for fifth). And any songs with 2 or more different voters. I am going to go listen to the rest of the songs posted I haven't heard yet.

Brian, I think this was a great idea. It's too bad more people didn't participate in it. Probably it's human nature. Or perhaps we live in a time where people are more self-centered and less inclined towards encouraging others. I don't know. But I know you did the right thing offering everyone a chance to discover and promote the the best music being posted on JPF. Thanks.

Hmm..I just read through this thread. Hope it's not too late to put down a few. I have to say I've been mostly absent from JPF over the last few months, but I'll put down songs that I remember having moved me.
1. In The Fullness of Time - Tom Franz
2. We Spanked a Good Night out of the Moon - Little Stevie B.
3. Animal Blues - Ken Damkier
4. I Know - Cover by the talented Kaufman family
5. My Beautiful Man - Ellen Mosley

I've unlocked this post so anyone who hasn't had a chance to get involved can still do it. I am halfway through my Euro visit and feeling optimistic about starting a new edition of our music awards, though I doubt I will allow it to be the size it was last time. In addition, I have some new ideas which include getting you all into the mindset of choosing songs for opportunities. I think it could help many of you see things in a new way.
So jump on board and if a new song you love has been recently added to your top 5, feel free to edit them in.
We'll revisit this in Nov/Dec.

Bon jour Brian,
I do hope you and Linda are safe given the riots in France all because they raised the retirement age from 60 to 62!!! Think of me as you partake of fine French cuisine in some quaint cafe and enjoy all things Just Plain French!!
au revoir', Lynn

Cool, I thought this might have sort of faded away, but didn't want to say. I'll keep track of the updates and send them on for you, Brian. There have been some good ones posted since then!

I only started off with 3 rules besides Brian's "Did it Move Me" 1.) Couldn't be one of mine 2.) Couldn't have me playing on it 3.) Had to be someone that I felt was "part" of the community (it's my 5 songs I can make any rules I want -- ha, ha). Well, rule #3 didn't come into play and I relaxed on rule #2. I mean, what could be more "moving" than for me to want to play on something. 1.) Broke Down In A Carney Down by Scott Campbell. I was actually looking for that blues song by Scott about the guy who everyone loved -- maybe that was in 2009 (It was Brought the whole house down -- from 2009). 2.) When Jenny Left Oklahoma by Wendy D: I started to play on this one, but never finished. 3.) Angels In The Room by Louis and Ian Ferrin. I liked the early version the best and the only copy I have of it was me adding bass and guitar to Ian's piano and Mike's singing. 4.) 3-Speed Trani by Ellen M: Can't say why I liked this one so much, but I did. 5.) Arizona BY Scott Campbell: Just some wonderful songwriting. I left off quite a few good ones. Kevin
