Hi Stephen and Jim. I'm not on Twitter but I've found the post very useful. I think it's universal. It works for every site, not only for twitter. Thank you so much for posting the link, Jim. Nadia

Steve Lawson's link is great for a couple reasons. One, points out technically and strategically the differences between MySpace and Twitter.
Two, it points out that neither is very effective without a plan. How do you make it work with your current marketing plan? Which begs the question...
You do have a plan, don't you?

Yep I have a plan. Although my ultimate aim it to increase my sales both live gigs and cds/downloads. My first step is just simply to connect with people. Let them in to the aspects of my life that are interesting. For example how I write a song, what inspires me. Book I read, music I listen too, Food I like to eat. places I visited etc. When we connect there then it's a bit more personal than just saying buy my music. They become part of the process of making me, of me making music.

I have only a handful of followers on Twitter but unless I sit and watch it all day long, most of their posts zip by without me ever seeing them. Some seem to post almost continually (I have dumped a couple of followees for that reason).
Am I missing something?

Am I missing something? You don't need to see every tweet from everyone you are following (I most certainly don't). Tweets tend to be about the here and now, so there's little point reading them half a day later. It's like attending a party: the point is not to hear every word that is spoken, the point is to join the conversations that you find interesting. Also, make sure you only follow people that you find interesting. You don't need to reciprocally follow everyone who follows you. I have about 300 people following me, but I'm only following 39 peeps myself.

Hi Guys: How do you have time to Twitter and Text Message and listen for the doggone cell phone... LOL! At my age, multi-tasking is a thing of the past. I have trouble just walking and trying to chew gum at the same time. All these distractions would seem to steal valuable time away from songwriting from my perspective. But I'm not trying to "rain on anyone's parade." You gotta do what's best for you. Just be careful while you are driving... please. http://www.ShowCaseYourMusic.com/DaveRice

Twitter, Facebook, Bebo, email, mobile phones, text messaging, message boards, chat rooms, reality TV shows, US pop idol got talent - so much chatter, so many 'stars' - so little to say! Dan

I hate to be a crumudgeon, but how many hours in a day are there to spend on this crap? {Myspace, Facebook, Twitter, ad nauseum}
The time would be better spent doing a million other things,{like say.. LIVING!} or at the least practicing the craft. I'm as diligent a self promoter as their IS, but at some point it becomes OVERKILL! I can't imagine why someone would be interested in what I'm doing at ALL TIMES, or vice-versa!

As the culprit who started this thread, I found twitter takes too much. I recently started the page but geesh it's taking too much of my time. Visit it like once a week if so much now.

I haven't joined Twitter. Don't know if I will or not.
"Grits is one of those country-boy words that is both singular and plural-like deer, elk and sheep. I think the singular is appropriate when there's a modifier that makes it clear one is talking about something specific. Like, 'Grits are good for you, but these here grits is tasty.'"~~Joe Wrabek

I don't totally get it myself, but all the younger peeps I know are all very very into it.

Just to throw in my 2cents... Bob, You make great points! One should not spend all day on these things. I put in a couple of hours a day on the net doing promo and the rest of the time is devoted to life, writing, recording etc. If you want to spread the word about your music, Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, a personal web site etc., are all great tools to get it out there and have others do likewise. It's like Radio used to be in the old days except we have the power to deliver the signal and we get to bypass the gatekeepers (YAY)! I have gotten a lot of great traction from Twitter. I use it in conjunction with Blip.fm to Blip/Tweet out my music and I also use the Twitter search and Twilerts to alert me about people who Tweet about artists I am similar to. When I gather this info, I @ them with a link to my music or a particular song and introduce them to my music this way. I get great response and the more people Re-Tweet my Blips or Tweet about me, the more people are introduced to what I create. Of course, if they like the music, I send them to my official site for more! You do have to promo your own site... all these gidgets, gadgets and sites come and go. But it's great to use them while they are hot! One really cool thing that came out of Twitter for me was a shout out by the legendary Teena Marie last week. She and I connected on Twitter, she DMed (Direct Messaged) me telling me that she would check out my music... some people in her promo team checked it out also and told her about me also and she mentioned me on a radio show this week. It was a really nice shoutout. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHuNZNzkkS8I also had a message from Grammy winning artist Chrisette Michele about one of my songs (It's A Beautiful Day) and she told me she'd like to meet up with me sometime... heard from some people in Alicia Keys camp also. All very nice things that do add up if you act on them. Anyway, that's just been my own experience with the Tweeple (Twitter language for people... ha ha, yes dear friends... there is a Twitter language!) Have a great week! Nat

The only new followers I get are porn stars and people trying to sell me something. ...........Now that I think about it, they all trying to sell me something.
I am on the verge of writing off Twitter entirely.

I refuse to twit. Or twoot. Or whatever they call it. MySpace was (and is) bad enough. I saw a Doonesbury cartoon that asked (rhetorically), "What did we do before there was Twitter?" The answer: "We probably wasted our time." 'Nuff said.

I thought I posted on this thread before. Anyway, "follow" me as: LindaOfficial ***NOTE:*** Changed it to that TODAY...! [My website is now http://www.lindaofficial.net - .NET not .com which was taken, and email now matches too] Would love to have you following! :-) What I love about Twitter is that I can Tweet once and it posts simultaneously to Facebook, MySpace, my official site, AND my blog. Now THAT is cool and timesaving! I keep it mainly one-way. I don't follow very many. I'll try out TweetDeck - but mostly I use it as a posting tool. I'm rarely on the actual site because I Twitter from my cell phone via text message. I have found, though, that weirdly I am now getting more normal, actual, real 'followers' since I clicked to follow Ryan Seacrest. Go figure Linda

I am on the verge of writing off Twitter entirely. I used to get the gals in bikinis following me - I kicked them off when I see them sign up - USUALLY they are fake. If you check out their profile, it's usually tagged by Twitter already as "something was fishy with this account, we're checking it out." Just mentioning.... Also I think if you have something to say on current events, that shows up in the news stream and could grab others' attention. It's all in what you're using it for. Don't let it control you. Don't feel obligated to reciprocate-follow everyone you know or who follows you. Look at a few celeb's feeds. They follow maybe 30, and have 9,534,238 followers. And BTW - TweetDeck is AWESOME!! It links to Facebook and gives me a column of just Facebook updates from my friends! All updated - and I don't have to be on a web browser to boot. AND TweetDeck has an app for your iPhone/iPod Touch, too. Sweet! Linda

OK so I'm tootling around out there tonight.
Twitter will VERIFY accounts of celebrities if they are the Real McCoy. When you see that - you can be sure it's acutally that person.
So just if you're curious, here are a few Verified ID's you might have fun looking into: just do a search for this ID and you'll be there:
SlashHudson CHRIS_Daughtry myleycyrus PaulaAbdul jtimberlake RealHughJackman RyanSeacrest johncmayer aplusk (Ashton Kutcher) ladygaga KrisAllen4Real adamlambert taylorswift13 perezhilton Allison4Realzzz (not verified but is Allison Aruheta) realbrookewhite (also not verified) DavidArchie (archuleta, not verified) mdoolittle - Melinda Doolittle (not verified - clearly all are linked together though) mjohnsmusic - Michael Johns (not verified) levarburton BrentSpiner coldplay oprah britneyspears
I'm not into celebrity gossip stuff at all, but it *is* interesting to hear what they themselves are actually thinking and doing!

Actually, this site looks way better, if anyone is interested in hunting down your favorites: http://truthtweet.comIt's a blog that is tracking Verified status on Twitter. You can look up by category, music, movies, etc.

Jan, pretty much. You can update your status from your cell phone by either Facebook OR Twitter. But if you have a website, a MySpace, blog, or other spots on the web, Twitter will allow you to update ALL YOUR SITES with one click.
THAT is cool.
Facebook can't do that. You can update your Facebook status via Twitter. Not the other way around, though.
