Hi Folks,
So today we passed the 500,000 song mark for this year's JPF Music Awards. It looks like our album count will fall a little short of 50,000, though there's still a lot of time before the August 31st deadline. We usually get 80% of the entries at the start.. 10% between the start and deadlines and the other 10% at deadline. So with 40,000 albums so far that would suggest we may end up just a little short.
I am very excited to get started on the process. I will likely be underground for the next 4-5 months getting it all categorized, recruiting the needed judges/screeners and making sure our new digital process can integrate with our process and that we can get the CD entries into the system as well. (CD Baby having most of their stuff digitized is a big plus).
I think we're on a roll right now and I am hoping to keep it going. Next up we want put some focus on our Resources collection. I plan to run the list in the newsletter and then solicit commentary and suggestions for what is good, not so good and what we might have missed. Then once we're happy with the list and feel we have vetted it as best we can, we want to contact the folks on those lists to try and create some additional Community Partner relationships.
We do still plan to contact our previous awards nominees/winners but not until we check and see if we got entries from them already in the CD Baby stuff.
So that's what's happening on this Friday. Things are heating up around here and I expect a long weekend while the CD Baby deadline passes (I am answering several hundred email questions a day right now) and we start the screening process. I have a conference call with our tech partner in a few minutes to go over the process again.
Have a great weekend everyone!
Brian

OK Brian, so who's scamming the system ? There must be folks who aren't JPF members who are entering. It's kind of hard to believe that 45,000 members have released 50,000 albums and 500,000 songs in the past year. I can barely find a dozen album releases on the forum, let alone tens of thousands. What gives ?

Actually I didn't say we'd gotten 50,000 albums... I said we were going to fall short it appeared.
We partner with CD Baby. They are handling Digital entries. Anyone on CD Baby is allowed to enter if they join JPF. I don't know how many are new and how many are existing JPF members until I get the sign up list. CD Baby tells me that they've already had nearly 35K CD's signed up through them. Last time we did this, they had 22K, 6K of which were brand new to JPF. I suspect this time around, 9-12K will be new to JPF which will climb our membership numbers that many once we have the list. It's also pretty common to get 2-3-4-5-6 CD's from any given member. (Last year we had several send us more than 10.. their entire catalog).
I have over 5K already sitting here which members have sent us in the last 2 years or handed us at Roadtrip shows in person. A lot of folks release an album every year. The numbers aren't really all that surprising and as I indicated, it's actually lower than we expected based on previous awards years and percentages entered via CD Baby and JPF. We're getting about 100 a day right now in the mail as well. That will tail off until the deadline where we normally get 500-1000 via the mail the last week each day. We'll have to see if that happens this time around. Between now and the deadline our members as a group will likely release another 20K CD's, but I have no idea how many of those we'll get.
We'll be posting the entire list (as we have every year) and you're welcome to count them up for yourself if you'd like. Most of our members have multiple CD's released. You can't use the message boards (as I have said literally 100's of times but some don't seem to listen) as an indicator of what's going on with JPF. It's a very specific subsection that like to use message boards and has little to do with the general membership. Most active touring/performing artists don't have time between rehearsals and gigs and day jobs to post on boards. We typically have a lot more of the songwriter only or occassional performer crowd here who do their work on the boards rather than in a rehearsal space or venue.
Oh, and you're also mistaken. There's never been a rule that music has to be released this year. The only rule is you can't enter the same music 2 times.

Ah ,that explains it. Any music, from any year makes sense. I just got this mental impression of non-JPF members throwing CD's into the contest, and hence overwhelming it, where it's meant to be a contest for the membership.
I'd like to suggest a couple of side awards, mainly for the satisfaction of forum members who are not in a position to travel and meet and greet. That's 'Best mp3 2008' and 'Best of the Lyric Boards'. Perhaps it could be peer nominated to cut down on entries, and a simple vote through the moderators. There's been some good 'work in progress' which deserves recognition, firstly for having the guts to put up your work in a public forum to be disected, and secondly there's a few ripper songs which deserve a nod.
cheers, niteshift

There's already a lyric award conducted solely on the message boards and has been since 2002. In addition, there's a lyricist of the year that has twice gone to message board folks. Beyond that, quite a few message board regulars have won awards in a variety of other categories. There would be no reason to have even more message board specific awards. Anyone can mail in a CD to enter and many of the board folks already have their stuff (and enter it) through CD Baby. We had award nominees last Awards alone from over 70 countries.
