Good Morning Brother Stan,

Another good write on this lyric.

I can definitely relate to this one.

Man has to keep a sense of humor when it comes to growing older.
Age seems to be a touchy subject with lots of folks, especially Americans.

Growing old isn't so bad... it's the slowing down that bothers me most, and those yearly trips to the doctor that always seems to leaves us older folk with another diagnosed condition and an additional pill to take. smile

Keep the faith though... a new spring always follows winter.

Peace

G'Mornin' Brother Nathan!

I figger I'm about 30 years away from "Assisted Living", so I got at least 20 Good Years t'Go....heh..(& I'm Goin' For It!)

I'm still One House Sale Away from bein' (Temporarily) a "Rich Ol' Coot"..& after a year of Blowin' It on Travel, I can get back to just Bein' an "Old Coot" again. (Better ya blow ANY Loot ya got before Our Gov't makes it ALL near-Worthless Scrap Paper, I allus say.)

But, Meanwhile, I got all these Lyrics to keep me Well-Grounded..heh! That & The Yard-Work!

Thanks for Your Kind Visit & Words, Ya Youngster! May All Life's Pills be Easy-to-Swallow!

Big Guy-Hug,

HiDee Mich-Sis!

Was readin' about The Grammys this AM...(& how Bruce Springstein's kinda gettin'-snubbed so Kanya West gets "Album of the Year")..

I reflected on How Little This All Means to ME...

The ONLY Song I've heard on the Nominees for "Song-of-the-Year" is
"Before He Cheats"..the REST? Never HEARD of 'Em...!

I USED to know ALL the Pop "Top 10's"...Now..it's a big YAWN...& A Blank Stare-Back. My Ears ARE Tuned-to-a-Different-Era!

Frankly, My Hat's OFF to The Kiddies..THEY CAN Appreciate Music from "My Generation" a lot better than I can adapt to Theirs.

Of course, THIS just makes ME feel "Even-OLDER"...heh...

But, as Steve Winwood once sang, you got to "Roll With It, Baby!"

Uh-Huh!

Sorry t'hear you've actually HAD that "Fallen & Can't Get Up" Experience..I've yet-to, but do have a Sister, 5 yrs younger, who got a Knee-Replacement just last Summer..I'll get My Turn, someday. (Ouch!) I really Dread losin' Mobility..hope I can take my Driver's License to da Grave with me..heh!

But MEANWHILE..It's a Bright Sunny Day, & La Femme's just headed off to The Tribune to score a Ticket for a Christmas Movie Preview (I've already Forgotten its Title..heh!) She's already-scored Tix for Premier of "Margot at the Wedding"..for Next Thursday..So I got Somethin' To Live For.. ;-)>

Life..Ya Get It in Little Daily Packages..& with any Luck, ya get "Old" Thrown in at No Additional Cost.

Thanks for Your Always Kind Visit & Words, Kind Sis!

Warm BBHugs backatcha,
Ol' Stan

Howdy Tampa,

I was truly enjoying this a lot..well until I got to the Mary line and a few thereafter that just felt like they were stuck in there for some sort of gratuitous body slam to the religious....sorta like gratuitous sex scenes in a movie. Didn't add anything to an already good plotline of the song...and actually stopped me to make me wonder why you felt compelled to "go there". Think you could come up with some other really good OLD themes without the religious-based lines, which'd prolly keep this one off the air or at least off some publishers KEEP list.

Otherwise...I was really WITH you on this one! Now where'd I put my glasses??? Ahhhh...they are on my head. Drat. LOL

Hugs,
Bobbie

HiDee SBL!

I sorty get a Kick out of Older Folks allus sayin'"God-Willin'", etc...JUST IN CASE "This-is-IT!"

I'm even Guilty of it myself.

So..it was perhaps Evil-Fun to keep the runnin' gag Runnin'...'til it got Downright-Cantankerous.

As ol' Ricky Nelson once sang, Ya can't please..everyone..so..Ya Gotta Please..Yourself. (With one Exception I'm Aware-Of, The Christian Crowd basically Ignored "Do The Right Thing"...so who needs 'em? They're too-busy gettin' pissed-off over some Rhetorical Point of Order..OR hidin' their Cash-In from Uncle Sam.)

Not ALL of 'em, I'll add...And..I thank ya for Making Your Point & Your Kind Visit, SBL!

BPH
Stan

PS...& now, Your Post there makes 2. (Thankee!)

Mssr. Kid..I replied, but got "Post Deleted" & NOW I gotta Scoot/Will Reply to your Kind Post, below, as soon as I get back!
Thanks Too!

This piece is sooooooo funny! There is absolutley no sense of political correctness (is that a word?) in this guy. IMO I have to laugh at how stern and rigid that we have become. Humans always seem to take idea's to the extreme until they become comical. Anecdotes like this can have a humbling effect on me, in the sense that they show me how far we have come as a society without going anywhere at all! Good read!

1.Have you sung this one out yourself? There were a few places where I felt there were alot of words.
(& "Black Jack" was a Chewin' GUM that Came in Sticks)

2.This is the only back to back line that doesn't ryhme.
My Dog is DEAD, (He Doesn't LEARN New Tricks)
Since, In Dog-Years, He Just-Reached..25..

3. I think when you do an ubeat song as I am assuming this one is, you almost have to focus on where your multi-syllable words are placed. This song should roll off the tongue.

Minneapolis had Trolly Cars in Heat-&-COLD(doesn't roll for me)you obviously can manipulate this through the vocal accents in the song, but I didn't feel like it flowed when reading it. JMO.

Overall I thought it was great imagery of what our society looks like to the older generations.

Stan,

Well I hear a lot of good humor in it. It makes you want to see it, like a video, ya know, with all the visuals and memories. Did I read this is your 3rd lyric in 24 hours? Where does it all come from?? Wish my mind worked that fast! smile

HIDee Mssr Kid!

As you've discerned by-now, I'm not too-concerned about PC-ness, & have a Lotta Fun Pokin'-Holes wherever I think they need to be made in Society's Hastily-Woven Fabric. (& Yep, I even Laugh at Myself!) Old Age REALLY Sucks, but it's got its Funnier-Side, which helps keep the Suicide Rates down.

OK..Item #1: Yep, DOES take some FAAST Singin', but CAN be done..at least in my Addlepated Head. (I've gotten away with some HUMONGOUS "Crams" in the Past!) I've also got my fanny kicked by some of my More-Honest Musical Co-Labbers, & hadda rewrite My Share of Lines Like this'n' On-the-Spot, come Demo Time. So, you may be right, I may be crazy!

Item #2: I've actually penned that Verse in same Rhyme Scheme as I'd penned da Bridge. So, insteada AABB...It's ABAB. It WAS an Accident...BUT I decided to keep it thataways, since it was FUN, and since it'll prolly wake up The Audience a wee-bit before I sing the Next Verse in The RIGHT Rhyme Scheme, & they'll (Hopefully) Never Know What Hit 'Em.

So far, you are the ONLY one who's CAUGHT that Boo-Boo, & I Congratulate Ya on "The Catch!" (Doubt BIGTIME that it'll ever be as-Popular as that "False-Start" in Mamas & Papas "I Saw Her Again, Last Night"...but sometimes Boo-Boos are as Interesting & Attention-Getting as the Song Itself.) (Remember the Drummer's covering the Too-Early Vocs on "Louie-Louie"?) (& then there's that lovely Off-Pitch Sax Solo on "Angel Baby"..but that'n's WAY before your time, I 'spect!) {The Producers tied to DUPLICATE that on the Follow-Up Single, but it was TOO-Obvious, & [I think it's her Name] Rosie & The Originals ended up as "One Hit Wonders".}

Point #3: Another "Cram" I THINK I can pull off...(& I'm Sure Minneapolitans would LOVE to hear Their Name sung in ANY Song!) I lived there 1947-8, age 3. Was infatuated with TRUCKS...could tellya Names of Whoever'd made 'Em. Trolleys were Yellow, if they carried Passengers, Red if they were "Work" Trolleys, with Crews to fix the rails & powerlines. Still remember the Ding-Dings (& the ZAPS) they made as they whizzed-by, too!

Advice from a Genuine Old Guy: REVIEW Your Early Memories fairly-often, lest ya Forget. Your brain holds a Myriad of Details from your Earliest Years, ALL of which'll turn up as Song Fodder...IF ya can Still REMEMBER the Details~

My 40's & 50's remain a-Blur...but those First 20-30 Years'-Worth, still clear-as-a-Bell!

Thanks for Your Kind Visit & Fine Catch, Amigo!
Big Guy-Hug,
Stan

HiDee Mz Kristi!

Waal, Bein' Old is somethin' I continually Accumulate Details On, so it was An-Easy-Write..heh-heh! (& watchin' whatcha think is a KILLER Idea drop-like-a-Sinker also is Great Motivation to pen Da Next Lyric, IMO.)

Think my Personal-Best is 5-in-a-Day, & fastest-ever was 5 minutes flat. (Not that ANY ever made me a nickel, I'll add!) ;-)> (Wonder what Guinness Booka World Records says is The "Record" there...hmm...New Challenges-Ahead!)...

I'd PREFER "Quality-Over-Quantity"...but yeah, I'll TAKE Whatever Da Muse Drops in My Lap~! (At my age, with My Degree of Jaded-Ness, I'm thrilled when I get even ONE Idea anymore!) ;-)>

Many Thanks for Your Kind Visit & Words, Mz K!
Big Hugs & Happy Weekend,

HiDee Kind Mz N!

Here in America, we don't really Look TOO MUCH forwards to Old Age, since so Much of Our Culture is Youth-Oriented. BUT, I think Kids are less-&-less inclined to go out & Buy a CD, as-opposed to buying Just One Song, in a Download...& MAYBE, just Maybe, the Major Labels'll pay a bit More Attention to the Buying Power of the Boomer-Generation in their Future Marketing. I dunno..I just Write 'Em, heh! (Alas, most Radio Stations merely play "The Oldies", too..so ANY "Boomer-Oriented" New One's gonna have a tough time HERE in the Commercial Marketplace...(Unless it's Counrtry Genre.)

Luckily, there's also The REST of the World to market to.

Thanks Very Much for Your Kind Words & Visit!

Big Hugs,
Stan

Stan,

My Grandfather was in his late 80's before he took a look at a picture his son had snapped of him working with a horse, and for the first time ever realized he was an old man. He lived quite a few more years. It seems to me that with America graying, there should be a market for this kind of material. I've been considering material I've written that would target that nitch.

I've also been hanging out at the Peabody Mall just across from where my chiropractor's office is three mornings a week with the active geriatric crowd. They come in early as a few of the stalls in the food court are beginning to open. Most are Catholic, and attend the Carmelite Chapel just down stairs for early morning Mass. (I've been sitting in with them on that, also.) Quite a few get in their daily exercise without the need to battle barking dogs, traffic on the crosswalks that they may or may not be able to hear, the variable Boston area weather, or muggers. The Mall has hired a guy old enough to have retired several years ago at least as their main man for that time slot. Good choice.

I like old people. They are wise, witty, and wonderful. One day, I intend (God willing) to become one myself. In many countries of the world, age is still revered. I heard of one place where the basic belief is that you keep on being all the ages you have been when you were younger, but add more to the mix the older you get. The older you are, the more delightful, funny, wise, and valuable you are percieved to be. I believe this is an accurate assessement.

Good lyric. Write more like it.

Skip

P.S. Get those books I sent yet?

HiDee Skipper!

IF ya ever check Your Crits, you'll see I've already Thanked ya for the Kind Books ya send me...(Tho I think it take all Year to read 'em at 80-pages-a-day...Gulp...so it'll all be-awhile before Ill be able to discuss any witcha!) But, again, Many Thanks for Your Kindness, Amigo!

I've always enjoyed chattin' with Older Folks, partly 'cuz they usually have The TIME to chat, & yeah, 'cuz they're got a wealth of info! The One Regret, as-witnessed by watching My Neighbors, either-side, is that they can Turn-on-Ya at the drop-of-a-hat.

But...I can understand their perhaps "Impatience"...(It's the "Betrayal-Factor"...are they in so-much-Pain that only by BACK-STABBING are they Made-Whole?) THAT I've yet to understand.

But..at least by hangin' around 70-80-yr-olds, I can continue to pass for "Young",..heh! ;-)> (That First-Ever Social Security Check...due end of this month..will shatter Whatever Fantasies I still have..about "Youth"...) But, I got 2 "Wild" Shirts...& an Emerald-Green pair of Topsiders today at the "Puce"..($12-for it all) (& a WILD pair of Metallic-Blue "Choppers" Sunglasses from "Betty"...my Soul-Sister "New Babe at the Market"..for $2) so other'n the thinnin' Partly Gray Hair (Still-hidden by a Key-West Baseball Cap) I still pass for Whatever Passes for "Young" in this State STILL fulla-Retirees.

&..DID pen a Kid-Lyric (Sung prolly by an Old Guy like me) Titled "You Are The NOW" this AM... Bit-preachy...but I'll post it later. (LOTSA Yard Work...& makin' a New Base for our Glasstop Dining Room Table today..out of 2 old Palm Beach Street Light Bases..it'll Be-Awhile before I get back here tonight!)

Thanks for Your Kind Visit & Books, Amigo! I owes ya!

Big Guy-Hug,
Stan

Stan,

No need for Monetary Thanks. You read a chapter a day for a month and you've repaid me, with interest. By then, I'll expect you'll be hooked. Reading the Bible is like learning to smoke cigarettes. At first, there is a natural adversion to the stuff (physically in the case of the tobacco, spiritually in the case of the Bible). But if you keep at it a bit, what was initially a bit off-putting becomes a thing you come to relish--then rely on.

When I first began reading the Good Book, it was cold oatmeal for two weeks straight. I only did it because I had a new room mate who did it in my presence every morning for about 20-30 minutes. I hadn't been, but figured I should. Also, it was simply embarrassing not to--rather like the peer pressure that gets a person past the nausea of their first smoke. After two weeks, I noticed something that related to something I'd read earlier. Sure enough, two thoughts that fit together like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle to create a larger whole.

By the end of the year, I was reading my Bible more than all my other school studies combined--and I got my first ever straight "A" report card. The Good Book is a great mind sharpener. In it, you walk and talk with some of the greatest and most godly people who have ever lived--including Jesus Christ Himself. No need for sprinting in that kind of company. A thoughtful stroll each morning is more to the point.

One thing I forgot to mention... Those who do Water Witching say you have to "talk to the stick"--referring to the forked stick they employ to divine water--to get it to work properly. They say you must speak respectfully to the power that makes that stick dip toward water, or it simply won't work as it should.

Now I believe those Water Witcher's are messing with a class of spirits they have no way of knowing are helpful, or simply helpful so they have the chance to do greater harm. But there is a parallel between the respect the Water Witcher shows toward his forked stick and the respect required for reading the Bible properly. Its always best to bow your head and ask the same God who the Bible claims inspired its writing to help you understand and apply what it is you will read. If you don't, you can miss a lot. Kind of like running laps in a cathedral, but making no forward progress spiritually.

Do you pray? If so, do it before you read. If you haven't, try it. God always listens to those who rarely address Him. If you're not ready for that, no problem. I'm praying on your behalf. Just read. One version of the Bible says, "He who gives attention to the Word will find good." There is a lot of good waiting there for you, or anybody else willing to take a peer--particularly on a regular basis.

As for me, I am halfway through memorizing Daniel's 5th chapter as of this morning. Its the dramatic account of the fall of earth's first great empire of Babylon--with the supernatural breaking in on a young monarch's heaven-daring Hugh Heffner style orgy where the sacred temple vessels were being used to serve up booze to a thousand nobles and the king's own harem who had been emptied into the banqueting hall the night of the annual ancient Mardi Gras. Hollywood never came up with anything half as interesting, or historically accurate. They've even dug up the very hall where it occurred in modern times.

If you start in Matthew, you'll be just in time for welcoming in the Christmas season. Matthew's gospel contains one of the two accounts of Jesus' birth and the events surrounding it. Keep an eye out for those references to the Messianic prophecies of the Old Testament. Pretty much every detail of Jesus' life--including several in those first few chapters--was laid out between 1,500 to 400 years before He was even born. Which is in itself excellent reason to regard the Bible as something far more than the product of mere human intelligence or design.

I recommend it. I know its worth.

HIDee Skip! I've begun "In The Beginnning"...& already What's There seems pretty Ignorant, yet penned-with-a-great-Spirit-of-Reverence. (That "Cursed are you above all the Livestock" line...waaal, can't say I really blame Him..heh!) & that Line to Eve, "Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you"...Obviously Scribed by Some Male, ages-ago, to solidify The Status-Quo. ;-)>

But..yep, I'll work on that Chapter-a-Month...keeping in-mind the Science of The Day & Political Climes. IS a lot easier to read sans the "King Jamesian Dialect", & I thank ya for that, Amigo!

Best Wishes & a Big Guy-Hug,

HiDee Brother Bran & Thankee!

I try my best not to become TOO "Mark Twainsian" while achievin' my 4 Score & maybe 10...but every now & then the Cantankerous Sarcastic Side'll rear it's hideous head, & Away I Go... ;-)>

For me, in my Elder Years, the Fun lies in Givin'-Good-Free-Advice, then sittin' back & later sayin' "I told ya so!".

We're not Smarter than the Younger Generation...we've just made More Mistakes, & hopefully Remember 'Em enough to Share what we Goofed At~ They're not particuarly Smarter than Us, either, since they choose to Ignore most of what we tell 'em.

(Told ya I had a Cantankerous Sarcastic Side, didn't I?) ;-)>

Thanks for Your Kind Words & Visit, Amigo!

Howdy Tampa...and Rev Skip.

There was a great hook in what Skip said to you...LAPS IN A CATHEDRAL. Dunno if that appeals to either of you guys as a potential lyric...but it made good sense to me.

This is hilarious. It really plays to the best of your skills and humor. I bet this would be a real crowd pleaser. Most everybody over the age of 30 can relate (my hand is raised). This line is gold: "My Dog is DEAD, (He Doesn't LEARN New Tricks)"

Oh, and rap music does all sound the same... even to a 32 year old (okay, not all... but the majority of it).

Hello TampaStan,

I've been really wanting to put a post on this one. My computer at home is making me crazy right now. It keeps giving me a fatal error and rebooting. I'm about to "boot" it. First, I wanted to thank you for posting on my song. I'm at work, so in my haste to get back to my "day job" I'm just mentioning it here.

I really liked this song. It's so funny and truthful. I like the details in this. As some of the other posters have commented, there are a few lines in here which might be a bit difficult to sing but you seem to have it covered. I like your use of so-called, "oldster" language like the word "spiffy."

Perhaps you could tweak this a bit and throw a few more in there. I thought of a few like: "crack used to be something you didn't want to step on" and "your friend would hit you if you called him a dog" or "you could "pop the cap" off a soda pop and no one called the cops" etc. Or Perhaps this could be a whole other song...(There were a few other words I thought of like: "bling" and "benjamins" that seem to have permeated our language.)

Anyway, I really enjoyed this and thank you again for commenting on my post. I will get over there and respond but I have to do some work stuff now (I will never be able to quit my day job).

G'Mornin' Special Blond Lady!

It's a Cute Phrase, but I'd prolly be better-off avoidin' too-many-more Church-Related Lyrics. I've by-now got enough Christian Folks peeved with me, & I actually Like These Folks..just think many of 'em are Close-Minded (Just like they think I'm the Same).

But we'll All be visitin' the Same God, sooner or later...& I'm tryin' hard Not to leave Too Many Enemies Behind.

HiDee CoreyGuy, Where Ya Been Hidin', Bro?

I once had a Customer with an Over-20 Dog..Lived under his Coffee Table, covered in "Water Tumors"..he'd plop in his pickup & leave under a shade tree while he hunted. Didn't see the need of puttin' the dog outta his misery...since (frankly) the dog didn't seem to BE in any. BUT..it wasn't good for much Anything but a Doorstop, & it WAS Butt-Ugly.

I'm still havin' LOTSA Fun gettin' Ole-&-Crochety. (& I can still Laugh at "Gettin' Old"...'cuz now I watch all these Young Bucks & Barbies KNOWIN' they'll get "Their-Turn-at-it"..& prolly have a lot-harder time Dealin'-With-It than I have.)

I still DO occasionally listen to Rap Music...for about 8-10 minute stretches. (Then I head back under my coffee table...)

Thanks for Your Very Kind Words & Visit, Amigo! Keep Writin' that Good Stuff...wanna be able to say "I knew him When!"

G'Mornin' Mz Talented-One!

I, too, face The Wrath of The Computer Gods...just hit Wrong Button Somewhere & 1/2 hr's reply hied-off to Spiritus Mundi!

Now where wuz we? Oh, for starters, Tim McGraw had a DANDY hit about a year ago.."I Remember When" MAY have been the title..since I really Can't Remember It this AM...but dealt with "coke" and "crack" & LOTSA terms that Have Changed Their Meanings Considerably over the last several Decades. So..I kinda held back a bit.

I'm STILL fond of "Spiffy", even tho I know it arrived around the time of "23-Skidoo", which deservedly-disappeared after the Roaring 20's. (I'm gonna have to HURRY & Pen one titled "WHATEVER" before someone beats me to it..heh!) "Hip" words are Such Fun..but tend to disappear just as fast as they become Commonplace. "Benjamins & Bling" DOES sound like a Hook, M'LadyChum...which Someone-Younger could have a Field Day With!

I'm glad you liked this one, Warts-&-All. I'm gonna try to do a few Love Songs now that AREN'T so Age-ist...(& Hopefully, I'll feel SO much Younger..again!)

Thanks for Your Very Kind Words & Visit!
Big Hugs (& Keep Singing & Writing as well as ya do, & watch The Day Job go-away..if you want it to!)

Hey &&&& Man!

Long time no chat! Haven't been on in ages, with various medical and holiday shenanigans keeping me away, but had a few minutes before early-bus-release today (in midst of snowstorm)...and natch, gravitated towards your hook. Ah, so fun and so true. I was trying to explain about "records" to my kids, and they're like, what? Then again, I was talking to a woman today about some school thing we're working on, I told her I'd just email it to her, and she said, of all things "I don't have e-mail". :o I nearly fell over (which in my case is easily done).

I haven't read thru all the responses, but maybe tonight I can do some catching up around here...I'm feeling inspired by the snow and holiday giving (btw, handed out about $10 today in my dollar-behind-me gifts...so appreciated, makes me so happy. grin)

Anyhoo, gotta scoot, to get a good spot in the bus-line!!

xoxox,

HIDee Mz Beth, & It's Great to Hear from Ya Again!

I'm REAL Guilty of Not Readin' Emails lately....so busy with the day-to-day, & 95% of What's There is Spam. My JPF Friends can allus PM me here...& my Immediate Relatives have my Phone Number...so there ya have it..heh!

I AM surprised this OLD Hook's attracted So Much Attention, but maybe it's A Healthy Trend. (OTHER Countries DON'T Dote So Much on their Youth Population....OURS gets it because of all the Loot they Tend to Spend.)

But..heh-heh..it's STILL Us Boomers who hold MOSTA the Marbles these days...& Ignore Us at Your Peril, Madison Ave... ;-)>

Thanks for Your Kind Visit, MZ B...& hopefully by Year's End I HAVE a few $ to hand out...(It's so far been REALLY Slow this year on Sales...but today's lookin' good...IF I can convince this guy's Skeptical Wife that YES, we DO have the SAME Grandfather Clock as the Store in Sarasota Has...but ours is REALLY $600 Less, with ZERO to set up & deliver it (VS $150). I hadda put it in Writing, but here's hoping I can sell a $2400 Clock & pay off a bit I'm behind-on to a major supplier...who's been Extra Patient with us'n's~

La Femme just scored Tix to Dec 17 Preview of "The Kite Runner"..& we're off to "Margot at the Wedding" tonight, IF I return fast-enuf from a 4:00 Housecall~!

HiDee Bro Jay!

Waal, I get (Hopefully) my 1st Social Security Check at the end of this Month...having survived to Age 62. The Nice Guy I fed all my Facts To in Orlando didn't like my Owning 3 Houses too-much, even tho I told him one's been up for sale for over a Year & is Draining us Mightily...(& that friggin' $700/month SS check'd make the Diffo between holding out for What House #3 is Worth, & taking a Mighty BATH & Dumpin' the Place to stay solvent.) Deaf Ears.

But..the New Accountant (replaces the one I've had over 30 YEARS who flat-out Disappeared) says IF I make around what I've made the last 3 years, & DIVIDE it by my Wife's Half, I'm well-UNDER the $13K a year I'm ALLOWED to make before SS takes $1 BACK for every $2 I make over the $13K a Year.

So..in about 2 weeks, I'll know if I can Catch My Breath..OR if my New Accountant was Wasting HIS.

It's just a New Layer of Bureaucracy I gotta deal with as I age-gracefully-as-possible. (I've already learned to deal with the VA for Health Care...Yassuh!)

And then, there's Fla property taxes and Insurance...ALL these Day to Day things help a body keep a Sharp Mind & Sarcastic Outlook...Regularly!

How I LONG for the Days when ALL I worried about was Grades & Booze & Babes~! But, as my New Quip Goes: "That which doesn't kill us makes us Song-er!"

Thanks for your Kind Visit & Words, Amigo!
Best Wishes & a Big Guy-Hug,
Stan

Bobbie and Corey,

We get to writing songs so long that we start talking in hooks, I think. I like both you suggested. Laps in the Cathedral. My Dog Doesn't Learn New Tricks Anymore (Since He Got Run Over by That Car). Ha!

Iron sharpens iron, and one brain here sparks another. Our muses are getting together and having a party, I think. That's good for everybody.

Stan,

Any place in the Good Book is good, but I'd suggest starting with Matthew first. Do a chapter a day. You'll hit the Christmas story there right away to begin with, so it would be a seasonally appropriate reading. Of course, if you've got started with Genesis, no need you can't keep going. I intend to memorize that entire book by and by. Right now I'm in chapter 6 of Daniel.

The Bible is actually a library of books written by about 40 different people over the course of about 1,500 years. Genesis through Deuteronomy were written by Moses about 1,500 B.C. He also wrote the book of Job, which was actually the earliest book of the Bible that was written, and speaks of things in Earth's most ancient written recorded past--including dinosaurs that were walking the Earth with people and other critters we have now. All this before Darwin suggested they came somewhat earlier than man's appearance on our planet--so there is no specific intent on the part of the Bible to counter a notion that is a very Johnny Come Lately idea in the flow of time--Darwinian materialism and the evolutionary theory. Job simply happens to provide very good historical eye-witness evidence to the contrary. He describes two dinosaurs in some detail--along with ten other animals that still share the planet with us. These all were animals that coexisted in the days of Job, way back in the early times of planet Earth--long before Darwin's later guess work.

When you have personaly verified how the Bible can see through time, believing it can do so into the past as easily as into the future is no stretch of logic, or reasonableness. It is simply the only viable intellectual option--as so eminent of early scientists as Sir Isaac Newton (gravity) clearly understood. Evidence is evidence, and should be examined and accepted, regardless of where it presents itself. The Bible presents evidence that shows an ability to see through time into the future and into the past. This is evidence that appeals to the human mind, if one examines that evidence without pre-prejudice against its acceptance. We can always deny anything. We retain that option and can use it in the face of the best evidence to the contrary. But facts are facts, and it is a good thing to know those facts before we come to a firm decision on a matter that can affect our future existence even beyond this life so vitally.

Here is how the various groupings of the Bible books are arranged--and the arrangement is more by sort of book than the time when the book was actually written...

THE OLD TESTAMENT (Written from 1,500 B.C. to 400 B.C.)

1. The Penteteuch (Five Books of Moses)

Genesis (the "Book of Beginnings", tells of the Creation of the world, the fall of mankind into sin, Noah's flood that laid down the geological column in about a year's time, the Tower of Babel, the call of Abraham as founder of God's chosen people, and the stories of the patriarch (the fathers), concluding with the story of Joseph--a man whose story is so important God gives as much space to it as to the first 2,500 years of human history)

Exodus (the story of Moses and God's call to him to bring the Jewish people who had been enslaved for 400 years out of Egypt and into the land God had promised to Abraham's descendants, includes the mighty miracles of God and the giving of the Ten Commandments)

Leviticus (the book for the Jewish priests of the tribe of Levi, including regulations for sacrifices, food safety, quarantining of infectious peoples, ect. that are scientifically-validated as sound health principles even in our day--includes a listing of clean and unclean meats, which dietary restriction is likely the reason the Jewish people are so well represented in obtaining the Nobel prizes--you live healthy lives and you have more to contribute to planet Earth)

Numbers (a listing of the tribes and names of the family turned nation that came out of Egypt, with other stories that occurred during their wanderings for 40 years in the wilderness on the way to Canan, including the account of an attempt to curse them by a prophet gone wrong named Balaam, lots of good stories in here after you get through those ten chapters of names--no need to include those names unless they actually existed and God still cares about foks personally, rather than simply in big, blurry masses...)

Deuteronomy (the Second Giving of the Law--a series of speeches by Moses shortly before his death and the Jews entry into the land of Canan--reviews their history, and gives warnings about what they will encounter as they leave the wilderness for the land of promise)

2. Books of Old Testament History

Joshua (story of the conquest of Canan under Joshua, Moses' successor)

Judges (stories of 12 Judges who delivered the straying people of God repeatedly during a 400 year period after the time of Joshua)

Ruth (a tender love story about a Moabite woman who chose to become a member of God's people--rather remarkable because God had forbidden any Moabite to enter into His people for ten generations, and Ruth came in in the third generation--occurred during the days of the Judges)

I Samuel (little boy prophet who confronts the High Priest who had allowed his sons to abuse their spiritual authority as priests by sleeping with the ladies who came to the temple to work--your Old Testament equivalent of Jim Baker banging his church secretary--with the account of the setting up of the first monarchy of Israel under Saul and later David)
II Samuel (These first and second books were when a book was too long to fit onto a single rolled scroll, so they used two scrolls to accomodate.)

I Kings (records of the reigns of the kings of Judah, and later Israel, the two sister nations that split from each other, but worshipped the same God and shared the same history)
II Kings (more of the same, with the kings identified as either good or evil and the specifics of their reigns recounted)

I Chronicles (another take on the same history as the books of I and II Kings, with more details)
II Chronicles (traces 21 generations of the Kings of Judah down until the fall of Jerusalem and their removal to Babylon)

Ezra (a scribe who taught God's Law to the people who were returning from the 70 years of Babylonian captivity predicted by Jeremiah)

Nehemiah (the cupbearer of the Persian King, who came to Jerusalem and helped the returned exiles who had come back after Babylon's fall and their release by Cyrus to rebuild their capital city's wall and restore their national identity)

Esther (the beautiful Jewish queen who won the beauty contest, became wife of Xerxes, and was used by God to deliver His people in 127 provinces of the Persian empire from genocide inspired by their arch enemy, a man named Hamaan--no mention of God in this book at all, but a careful detailing of the amazing series of "coincidences" that allowed the survival of the Jewish nation)

3. Books of Poetry (Wisdom Literature)

Job (oldest book of the Bible, written by Moses, views Earth as it exists within the federation of planets loyal to the Creator God, the book of intergalactic politics, gives a clear view of the dispute between God and Satan and how Earth and each person here in particular is of great interest as a forum where intergalactic issues are at stake)

Psalms (hymn book of the Bible, actually five hymn books used in the ancient temple service, with hymns to match readings from the first five books of the Bible, which were read progressively through each year)

Proverbs (short sayings by the wisest man who ever lived, King Solomon, the first ruler who ruled his kingdom by sound bites)

Ecclesiastes (the book Solomon wrote at the end of his life, after he had gone far from God, wasted many years, and returned world worn and weary to God as an old man)

Song of Songs (or "Song of Solomon"--the erotic love song of scripture, first book of the Bible I memorized, the words to an ancient stage play musical that was part of the yearly festivals among the Jews, a sort of ancient Valentine's Day...)

4. Major Prophets

Isaiah (the "Gospel Prophet", so called because of his many prophecies of the coming Messiah which were later fulfilled by Jesus of Nazareth. He also prophecied the rise to power of Babylon, the fall of Babylon, the name of the conquorer of Babylon--a man named Cyrus--150 years before the guy was born)

Jeremiah (the weeping prophet, who prophecied during the reigns of the final five kings of Judah before the Babylonian exile, when Jerusalem was destroyed and God's people were taken captive to Babylon for the 70 years foretold by Jeremiah)

Lamentations (the book that is a funeral song for the destruction of the Jewish nation by the Babylonians)

Ezekiel (a most unusual prophet who did his prophecying during the time many of his countrymen were already captives in Babylon, but some were still back home in Jerusalem, loves his wife dearly, has several X rated passages for X rated sins)

Daniel (the book I'm memorizing word for word, letter for letter, front wards and backwards, at present--fortells the sweep of human history from 600 B.C. until the end of the world in remarkable detail--including the rise of a power within the Christian church that would create havok and bring harm to many and think it had God's own place on planet earth)

5. Minor Prophets

(Twelve of them, take a look in your table of contents. Includes some like Hosea, the preacher God told to marry the hooker, and Jonah, who got swallowed by the "Sea Monster"...)

THE NEW TESTAMENT (written from 60 A.D. to 100 A.D.)

6. The Gospels (Four views of Jesus and His ministry addressed to four different groups of people)

Matthew (for the Jews)
Mark (for the Romans)
Luke (for the learned Greeks)
John (for the second generation church who didn't see Jesus directly, but were dependent upon the testimony of earlier eye-witnesses)

7. Book of New Testament History

Acts (This book is a second part to the gospel of Luke. It is addressed to a "Theophilos" which means "God-lover". It is an unfinished books, and tells of the astonishing things that occurred in the early Christian church. Some gripping adventure stories here.)

8. Pauline Epistles (Letters of the apostle Paul to congregations he founded and to people he worked with--a good many written while he was imprisioned for preaching Jesus, eventually he was beheaded as a threat to the security of the Roman Empire, which Christianity did eventually replace)

Romans
I Corinthians
II Corinthians
Galatians
Ephesians
Phillipians
Colossians
(etc. on through...)
Hebrews

9. Assorted Epistles (Letters written by either one of the 12 apostles, or by those who were very close eye witnesses of His ministry)

James (the brother of Jesus, writes particularly from a Jewish perspetive)

I Peter (the most famous apostle, the Big Fisherman, who was a leader of the church in Jerusalem, was later chained to a post upright in Ceasar's dungeon in Rome for being a threat to the Empire, and converted 46 of his jailers and guards during the months leading up to his death--according to early church legend)

II Peter (another letter by Peter, details concerning the end of the world)

I John (a series of three letters by the only one of the 12 apostles of Jesus not to be killed for preaching Jesus' had been resurrected--the youngest of the 12, once boiled in a vat of oil by the Emperor of Rome, who failed to kill him by this means)
II John
III John

Jude (a very short book, with details about Jesus Second Coming, a prophecy that was first given way back seven generations from Adam by a prophet named Enoch, who actually went to heaven without dying)

Revelation (the final book of the Bible, which uses symbols drawn from all the previous books to depict events that would occur from the time of Jesus until the New Heavens and New Earth replace the realm we live in now, including many prophecies that have been, and are being, fulfilled. Written on the prison island of Patmos, where the Emperor exiled the last living disciple of Jesus, John, after boiling him in oil failed to end his life.)

I'd suggest clipping the above and keeping it somewhere to allow you to keep the over view in mind. The last books of the Old Testament were written 400 years before the New Testament was written. That means all the prophecies pointing to the Messiah in particular were at least four centuries old before Jesus showed up and fulfilled them in amazing detail. It is necessary to know how the Bible was written to gain the full impact of its ability to see through time, as it does.

Gotta get to bed. Big day tomorrow. If you have questions about what you read, email me. <SkipJohnson777@gmail.com> I've been through what you are going through with the end of my pen, some of the books several times that way. Others, I've memorized. It is all very familiar territory to me. It is a long journey from Genesis to Revelation, and it doesn't need to be walked in that order necessarily. But I've been over it all repeatedly, and know its every nook and cranny. You're in for the trip of a lifetime.
