Hi Folks,
So.. Friday the 13th has come and basically gone (unless you're in Hawaii or farther west). Do any of you have superstitions about that sort of thing? Do you have a lucky guitar strap or a certain warm up excercise on keys or some other ritual you go through for luck? Do you believe in luck in terms of it being a real thing that some people have and some don't.. or it is just coincidence and hard work?
Are you scared of black cats crossing your path or stepping on a crack when you walk? (I think they call that fear obsessive compulsive now right? hahaha).
Spill the beans.. what do you believe? (especially important.. what do you believe even though you know it's crap but can't help yourself sometimes? Astrology? Saying "break a leg" before a performance? You get it...)

I don’t consider myself superstitious, however, why take chances. If I see a black cat on the side of the road, I’m hoping it doesn’t walk in front of me. I won’t walk under a ladder and avoid stepping on any cracks. I do, however, put my shoes and socks on first before any other article of clothing, but that’s so I can run away in case there’s a fire. My “Betsy” doll has, also, always been on stage with me, so maybe I am a little weird that way.
I do believe in luck (or the lack of it). Without going into a long theological discussion, I believe all events happen for a reason. Fate, karma, whatever. Like Lennon meeting McCartney, (Taylor meeting Daubert on JPF :)), Thing's are meant to be. Ether because we subconsciously will events to occur to control our own destiny , or some other force is guiding us.
Deep thoughts beyond my limited comprehension.

in a convoluted sort of way... I consider Friday the 13th as a lucky day. (not that yesterday was anything remotely special LOL) I view ALL days as equally lucky (or unlucky ) and since so many people consider the 13th as unlucky... I conclude that there is extra "unclaimed" good luck floating around on that day... and I may as well lay claim to some of it. Actually for me.... Thursday the 12th....and even moreso Monday the 16th are rough days for me.... because they are days when you let your guard down...(what with concentrating on surviving the 13th) all superstitions aside... there really have been 3-4 "Monday the 16th"s that have been really rough... (maybe it was just because they were Mondays? LOL )

Loved your stories Iggy and Harriet I have thought long about this and I can only find one strange superstition that I hold. You know how it used to be considered good luck to find a penny? Now it is not even worth bending down to pick one up. But I consider it BAD luck if I do NOT pick up that penny. Kinda like someone or something went to the trouble to place a little luck my way and I'm being unappreciative. Yeah, weird, but not worth getting help over Scott

Brian, When I went to flight school all of the training aircraft had a black cat and the number thirteen logo on the vertical stabilizer (tail section). That meant to say that training and skill overcomes superstition and luck. Every airplane had the number thirteen pasted all over it. Ben

Ben,
That's an interesting factoid. Thanks for sharing.

training and skill overcomes superstition and luck. I'd buy a beer for whoever thought that black cat / 13 stuff up! LOL Of course, truly causing someone to discard superstition is a challenge. But if anyone can, it'd be a sergeant in the military

John, superstition is only a word. Doesn't mean squat. I grew up around superstiton from my mother. That's where I learned to defy authorty. Her hangups and superstitions became so enane that I would purposly go against the grain.Ben

Well be prepared to buy the Pope a beer.
A theory for Friday the 13th is that the Pope at one point many years ago orchestrated a covert operation to extinguish the Knights Templar. The plan was apparently carried out on a Friday the 13th.

John, superstition is only a word. I completely agree. But whoever put the stuff on the planes had obviously decided to confront what appears to be a widespread human condition. That condition is what I was referring to. Well be prepared to buy the Pope a beer. I think you might have misunderstood my post. I was referring to whoever marked the planes up to try to get rid of the superstition. They're the ones who should get the beer. (I think the Pope might be a wine guy on special occasions, anyway).

John, I flew many of those planes and came back safe and sound. Like I said , superstition is only a word or an attitude. It has no place in the real world. It is something to be ignored. Ben

Superstition is like a ghost. A pigment of imagination that was instill in our mind by our ancestors during human evolution as a form of protection for our wondering soul.
Sorry I dont believe it. Our culture has a lot of it. SOmetimes I ride in heir conversations just to preserve my sanity.

No, I have never been superstitious. Some think there is Chaos in the Universe and others think there is Order. Actually there is Order even tho at times it seems like Chaos. Er, uh, now where did I put that Rabbits Foot.

No, I don't.

No, I don't.
Do you believe in luck in terms of it being a real thing that some people have and some don't.. or it is just coincidence and hard work?
Not coincidence, but hard work and sometimes even without hard work, just being in the right place at the right time. Maybe designed to certain ways,,,even the hard work part. ??? Mystery as to who or what control things. Self only? Self with some intervention?
Are you scared of black cats crossing your path or stepping on a crack when you walk?
No
Spill the beans.. what do you believe? (especially important.. what do you believe even though you know it's crap but can't help yourself sometimes? Astrology? Saying "break a leg" before a performance? You get it...)
I believe I don't know a pure and only true answer. I only feel passion to do things. If the passion isn't there, I don't do it, unless I am committed through my word, or contract. The only thing that I recognize are certain numbers that attract my eye,,,make me suddenly look at the clock when I was not even thinking about what time it is. That happens a lot, and times are of two important dates which the numbers 1,11,53. And 7-11 are a part of. I don't look for them, but will notice when they are on anything. I bet others have that happen with their important dates. Subconcience seeing all I guess it is. ????? Don't know that either.
Now,,,with me once being a baseball player, you'd think I would have superstitions. But I never did while playing, as I would handle each day as a unique thing. A new chance to do better. If i did good one day, I would only think about doing some of the things I didn't do good at, and focus on them. (My weaknesses). So, watching others not step on the chalk lines, or having to swing a bat a certain number of times had no meaning for me. It was all about the performance, and being in the NOW. At practice here, or for the times I played out, I was an open book,,,,just wanting to take it in. The band did a toast before the first gig. That was fun. It was special. I didn't feel the need to do any other ritual though, before or after.
Black cats are not different than black dogs in their color, or anything black. It's just one of the many colors. I think people come up with all kinds of history about things, from many years ago when people were afraid of just about everything, and wrote it down, as if it is a fact.
Every day is new, Every action taken can be new too. That showed me there wasn't a need to have superstitions. Just a want to do something, and let it all be fresh, for that day. Shower before eating,,,,then if the next day calls for me to be hungry early,,,I'll eat first. If one leg comes out of the shower after a string of days of the other one,,,,,so what! It comes out and I dry it! I know people that have to even take a shower the same way, and come out the same way! Funny. To be open is to be free of all that others have come up with that some think they have to follow. Why? If a certain leg is there, and is wet,,,,dry it! No matter which one it is. The other will get dried anyway!
Just all seems silly to me. Another friend has to turn everything on and off three times before moving on. He probably heard it somewhere, and once did it, and got into the habit of it, and for some reason, is scared to stop that procedure. I told him the worse that will happen if stopped, is that his gear will last longer!
Ladders? If not going to fall apart, what's the big deal about walking under one. We walk under all kinds of things a lot heavier than a ladder that could crush us!
People long ago used to bury a rag in the ground that they used to rub their sores or warts with. The believed the rag decomposing would also take away whatever ailment they had. Of course, after time, if the problem went away, they would remember the buried rag, and behold! The burying of the rag worked! A miracle!

I like Woody Allen's take - I'm paraphrasing as I don't remember the precise words but it was more or less:
'What's that?' 'It's a lucky four leaf clover...I bought it from a crippled beggar!'
