A Little Flour Sack Dress
Lori J. Stillwell
(c)1998

v1
Crosslegged on my bedroom floor
After bedtime prayers
With Mama and her stories
'Bout the worn out dress she'd wear..
Handstitched from a flour sack
Left on her old brick porch
Courtesy of Uncle Sam
While her daddy was at war...

CHORUS:
Arkansas would come alive
I could see her dance at night
By the glow of fireflies
In her little flour sack dress..
Between Roosevelt and Jesus
She found what she believed in
Love with a heart of freedom
In her little flour sack dress...

v2
BillieJo was her best friend
Across the railroad tracks
She had to sneak to play with her
Because Billie's skin was black..
Mama gave her that cotton dress
The day Billie turned ten
Cuz it was more than a black girl had
In a Southern state back then...

CHORUS:
Arkansas would come alive
I saw Billie dance at night
By the glow of fireflies
In that little flour sack dress
Between segregation and Jesus
She found what she believed in
Love with a heart of freedom
In that little flour sack dress..

Bridge:
Mama's pictures faded amber
Sure as that dress has fed the moth
But her stories framed my growin' up
And in my soul they live on...

CHORUS:
Arkansas would come alive
I could see her dance at night
By the glow of fireflies
In that little flour sack dress..
Between history and Jesus
I found what I believe in
Love with a heart of freedom
Thru a little flour sack dress...

Tag:
Crosslegged on my bedroom floor
After bedtime prayers
With Mama and her stories
'Bout the wornout dress she'd wear..

A Thousand Miles Away

(v1)
At last you’ve gone and left me
I saw it coming on
Becoming more apparent
With the breaking of each dawn

(v2)
Can’t tell you how I miss you
Or how many tears I’ve cried
It’s so lonely here without you
Couldn’t even say goodbye

(Chorus)
I don’t know where you’ve gone off to
Thought we'd always have forever
But I know you’re never coming back
Not today, next week or ever
When I kneel and pray to God
I don’t know what to say
Though you’re just across the room
You’re a thousand miles away

(v3)
You didn’t mean to leave me
It wasn’t in your plans
And when I lean to kiss you
You don’t know who I am

(v4)
You don’t look any diff’rent
That’s what makes it oh so hard
Knowing I can’t reach you
Is tearing me apart

(Bridge)
Why does it have to be this way
So cruel and so unkind
To leave your body perfect
But take away your mind

(Chorus)
I don’t know where you’ve gone off to
Thought we'd always have forever
But I know you’re never coming back
Not today, next week or ever
When I kneel and pray to God
I don’t know what to say
Though you’re just across the room
You’re a thousand miles away

(Tag)
Yes I can touch you, I can hold you
But you’re a thousand miles away

Anita's Cookie Jar

Emily Sanders,Sheltering Wind Music, ASCAP
© 2006

She loved her yellow cookie jar
And kept it on a shelf
The woman who gave to everyone
Kept so little for herself
Antique glass with flower designs
Daffodil and daisy blooms
Brightened many mornings
That spoke of grey and gloom

Chorus:
Like poetry unspoken
And night's imprint of a star
A dream that can't be broken
Like Anita's cookie jar
I hold that history in my heart
Her spirit’s never far
The magic and the mystery
Of Anita's cookie jar

One day the jar was broken
Pieces fell against the door
Designs of blooming daisies
Lay shattered on the floor
We saved the tiny pieces
Made them into picture frames
Each told a timeless story
That spoke gently of her name

Chorus:
Like poetry unspoken
And night's imprint of a star
A dream that can't be broken
Like Anita's cookie jar
I hold that history in my heart
Her spirit’s never far
The magic and the mystery
Of Anita's cookie jar

Bridge:
Heirlooms frame our stories
That live deep within our hearts
They tell us where we came from
And will never break apart

Chorus:
Like poetry unspoken
And night's imprint of a star
A dream that can't be broken
Like Anita's cookie jar
I hold that history on my heart
Her spirit’s never far
The magic and the mystery
Of Anita's cookie jar

Now I see the pieces
From Anita's cookie jar
I don't see broken dreams
'Cause her imprint's on a star
Daffodils and daisy blooms will
forever be new and whole
On the same shelf holding memories
Framing imprints of her soul

Chorus:
Like poetry unspoken
And night's imprint of a star
A dream that can't be broken
Like Anita's cookie jar
I hold that history in my heart
Her sprit’s never far
The magic and the mystery
Of Anita's cookie jar

Ballerina Beautiful
Patricia Baker, BMI©2006

The attic was cold and dusty
Cobwebs dangled along the beams
Found a friend I’d almost forgotten
I used to tell her all my dreams

For years she laid there wondering
If I would ever return
Her face was just as pretty
And she was still my dancing girl

Chorus
She was ballerina beautiful in crisp crinoline and lace
She danced Laura’s Theme and Ode To Joy with ballerina grace
Her sweet innocent expression brought tears to my eyes
Still as ballerina beautiful as back then when I was shy

The fragrant smell of cedar
Took me back to such happy times
I didn’t know how much I’d missed
Soft music box lullabies

A treasure from my childhood
Tucked to the back of the drawer
But this time I took her with me
We danced across the attic floor

She’s still ballerina beautiful in crisp crinoline and lace
She dances Laura’s Theme and Ode To Joy with ballerina grace
Her sweet innocent expression makes me laugh until I cry
Ballerina beautiful she makes me feel so young inside

Grandma Read the Bible (Grandpa Held the Snakes)
Mike Murray c. 2006

Songs around the campfire
Hotdogs on a stick
Playing ball and fishin'
Swimming in the creek
That's not what I remember
It's what I wish had been
Thinkin' back on childhood
Sunday meetings in the tent
When I remember childhood
Sunday meetings in the tent

WHEN GRANDMA READ THE BIBLE
GRANDPA HELD THE SNAKES
SISTER WALKED ON BURNING COALS
AND DADDY PASSED THE PLATE
MAMA SHRIEKED IN A HOLY TONGUE
THAT NO ONE UNDERSTOOD
I HUNG BACK IN THE SHADOWS
BEGGIN' GOD TO MAKE ME GOOD

The people moaned and trembled
They sweat and rolled their eyes
Cryin' to the Savior
To cast out the Prince of Lies
But I never saw the angels come
When Hattie Devlin died
When I gave my testimony
My eyes and tongue were dry
When I gave my testimony
My eyes and tongue were dry

And I never dreamed of Jesus
The snakes, they made me scared
A sign, oh Lord, a sign for me
That I might know You're there
Staring up to Heaven
Seeing only clouds and air
Now I'm thinking back on Grandpa
Walking in the serpents' lair
Thinking back on Grandpa
Walking in the serpents' lair

CHORUS

Momma drowned one morning
Tryin' to walk across the lake
Daddy died of eating D-CON
Must have lost his faith
Sister rode a Harley
To the California sun
Ain't nobody left here
I guess I'm the only one
Who still remembers Grandpa
Back in 1951

CHORUS
AND I STILL REMEMBER GRANDPA
BEGGIN' GOD TO MAKE ME GOOD

If I Had the Copyright
Carla Ulbrich (c) 2006
If I Had the Copyright on the word f**k
I’d say f**k this job and yourself you dumb f**k
no need for hard work and no need for luck
If I Had the Copyright on the word f**k

It’s filthy it’s nasty unseemly and vile
That all may be true but it’s so versatile
So often deleted this fine expletive
Is a verb a noun and an adjective

If I Had the Copyright on the word f**k
I’d have no need for dadgum dang darn shoot or shucks
no need for hard work and no need for luck
If I Had the Copyright on the word f**k

Not a gasp not a sigh from my mouth would be heard
Nope just a cha-ching when I hear the F word
If people got jealous of all of my wealth
I’d tell them to copyright sh*t d*mn and h**l

If I Had the Copyright on the word f**k
It would roll off my tongue like water off a duck
Four-letter word usages perfectly honed
I could retire on New York alone

Where they say f**k the f**king motherf**kers I don’t give a f**k
If they can’t f**king take a f**king joke then hey what the f**k
Those f**kers will f**k you so don’t get f**ked up
Quit f**kin around or you’re gonna get f**ked

If I Had the Copyright on the word f**k
I’d say f**k this job and yourself you dumb f**k
no need for hard work and no need for luck
If I Had the Copyright on the word f**k

Just One More
(c.) Marty Helly

V.
He sits alone at the table
Stares down at his coffee
Tries to shake the cobwebs from his mind
Went out to seek an answer
But when he came home
He'd lost the one he really meant to find

Ch.
It was just a drink or two to clear his head
Troubled thoughts as it turned into three or four
Losing count it seemed his troubles disappeared
They were back when he woke up on the floor
Why'd he always have to have just one more

V.
She'd sit alone at the table
Stir some lemon in her tea
Wonder how late he'd be each night
Once there was a dream
Of a happy home
How long could she keep up the fight

Ch.
It was just a drink or two to clear his head
Troubled thoughts as it turned into three or four
Losing count it seemed his troubles disappeared
They were back when he woke up on the floor
Why'd he always have to have just one more

Br.
How many empty bottles lying shattered on the ground?
How much can love take before it drowns?

Ch.
It was just a drink or two to clear his head
Troubled thoughts as it turned into three or four
Losing count it seemed his troubles disappeared
They were back when he woke up on the floor
Why'd he always have to have just one more

V.
He sits alone at the table
Stares down at his coffee
She's packed her bags and headed out the door
One too many nights
Left crying home alone
She couldn't take just one more

KA-BLAM!
Lyrics by: Cindy LaRosa (aka Cindy Lucas)
Copyright 2005

Verse 1:
Momma's curtain was my cape
Sunday morning, six years old
Daddy was there to help me fly
Like my favorite comic book heroes
And when he held me over his head
I thought that I could touch the sky
He was the strongest man that ever lived
And still is in my eyes

CHORUS:
It was POW! KA-BLAM!
Just like an episode of Batman
And my heart went OOMPH! SHAZAM!
I felt like Captain America, Hulk & Superman
He helped to make me everything I am
And whenever his love lifted me it was
POW! KA-BLAM!

Verse 2:
The years moved on and I grew up
My life forever changed
I found the girl who rocked my world
And wanted her to share my name
And when I asked her for her hand
She said she'd be my wife
That kiss hit me like Mighty Thor's hammer!
The greatest feeling of my life

CHORUS 2:
It was POW! KA-BLAM!
Just like an episode of Batman
And my heart went OOMPH! SHAZAM!
I felt like Captain America, Hulk & Superman
I gave her forever with that golden band
Cause from the moment her love lifted me it was
POW! KA-BLAM!

Verse 3:
Now here we are still so in love
Some years down the road
Life's been good and now we have
A little girl of our own
And when she comes to me with a broken toy
And says, "Daddy I know YOU can fix this"
I know just how my father felt
When she says, "You're the best" and gives me that kiss

CHORUS 3:
POW! KA-BLAM!
Just like an episode of Batman
And my heart goes OOMPH! SHAZAM!
I KNOW I'm Captain America, Hulk & Superman
And I pray she'll always stay my biggest fan
Cause every moment her love lifts me is like
POW! KA-BLAM!

Yeah, every moment their love lifts me
And every moment that they're with me it's like
POW! KA-BLAM!
POW! KA-BLAM!

Little Brown Bear
©Revised 2006,2001
Lyrics by Kaley Willow,ASCAP

I sit so still on my small rocking chair
Lonely and sad, 'cause you are not there
I longingly look out the window for you
If I wasn't so brown....I'd really be blue

I know you're outside the door on the swings
Or climbing a tree doing little boy things
Tonight, like each night, you'll run up the stairs
You'll hug me so tight, 'cause I'm little brown bear...

Chorus
I'm your little brown bear, your little brown bear
And...you are my very best friend
Just like before, you'll race through the door
And we'll be together again

It's three o'clock and school should be out
I hear you coming with laughter and shouts
You'll change your clothes and pat my brown head
Toss me up in the air and we'll bounce on the bed

We'll go downstairs and get something to eat
I'll sit at the table in my very own seat
The telephone rings and you say "gotta go"
You've gone out to play, but there's something I know

Chorus
I'm your little brown bear, your little brown bear
And...you are my very best friend
Just like before, you'll race through the door
And we'll be together again

The years have flown by, and the times sure have changed
Though now on the back shelf, I hold in my pain......
College can't keep you; you'll soon be home
I know you'll come back...and I won't be alone

Bridge
I hear slower, thoughtful footsteps..then a pitter-pitter patter
It's been fifteen years...but time no longer matters
As your tiny son of two, who looks a lot like you
Reaches out for me.........
Now I'm his little brown bear

Chorus
I'm his little brown bear, his little brown bear
And....he is my very best friend
Like you before, he'll race through the door
And we'll be together again

We'll be together again................

Lone Starry Night
by john Arthur martinez and Ande Rasmussen
(c) 2004

Verse:
I ride to the mesas to unsaddle my fears
When I'm overwhelmed with the voices I hear
Through canyons of cacti and honey mesquite
I harvest the moonlight and discover the peace

Whip-poor-wills croon from the juniper branches
Far from the lights of the towns and the ranches
No civilized noise but the sound of my breathing
The footsteps I take and my prayerful heart beating

Chorus:
Where dust devils dance
and coyotes call
Where tumble weeds tumble
and rain seldom falls
The Almighty hand
paints a heavenly sky
On this beautiful canvas
this Lone Starry Night

Verse:
As stars whisper faithfully fables forgotten
I'm led by the Spirit down trails rarely trodden
A most sacred melody twists through the air
Offering strength for the crosses I bear

Chorus: Repeats

The Almighty hand
paints a heavenly sky
On this beautiful canvas
this big bending canvas
this Lone Starry Night

Lone Starry Night

Lone Starry Night

LOVE LINES
J. Bevington c. 2005

(V1)
I see you look in the mirror
Smoothing the wrinkles away
I see you stare as you brush out your hair
Searching for each strand of gray
I know just what you’re thinking
But darling, I disagree
You’ve never been more beautiful
And when I look at you I see

(Ch)
Love lines, your heart and mine
Written in time on your face
Did you really think you could love this much
And have it never leave a trace?
Love lines, there to remind you
Of all the joy we’ve shared
Each separate place is a mark of grace
Which shows how much you care
Love lines

(V2)
You wonder how this came to happen
How years could rush by like the wind
Your heart still feels like it’s twenty two
But time is a faithless friend
You think back to when we were courting
You were so carefree and young
That girl back then cannot compare
To the woman you’ve become

(Ch)
Love lines, your heart and mine
Written in time on your face
Did you really think you could love this much
And have it never leave a trace?
Love lines, there to remind you
Of all the joy we’ve shared
Each separate place is a mark of grace
Which shows how much you care
Love lines

(V3)
Some people scorn the familiar
They want everything to be new
They go through their lives but they’ll never find
A love like I have with you
There have been days I have doubted
Times I’ve been tempted to stray
But all it took was a single look
To chase those thoughts away

(Ch)
Love lines, your heart and mine
Written in time on your face
Did you really think you could love this much
And have it never leave a trace?
Love lines, there to remind you
Of all the joy we’ve shared
Each separate place is a mark of grace
Which shows how much you care
Love lines

I see love lines…

Mistakes Like Me
Melody Guy & Tom Kimmel, LGM Music (ASCAP), Morrissette Music © 2004

I can feel colors
And make things with my hands
I can hear music
When no one else can

And I could tell stories
You would not believe
If only somebody
Could listen to me

chorus
So what are my chances of turning out right?
And what kind of man will I be?
If I’ll never fit in this world as I am
What do they do with mistakes like me?

They say I’m crazy
They say I’m slow
I hear their whispers
Wherever I go

I know I’m not like
Anybody they’ve seen
So they call me special
That’s not what they mean

chorus
And what are my chances of turning out right?
What kind of man will I be?
If I’ll never fit in this world as I am
What do they do with mistakes like me?

bridge
So maybe I’m different
Maybe I’m strange
What does it matter
If that’s just how I came?

And who should decide
Who gets by on this earth?
Who gets to measure
What somebody’s worth?

(solo)

chorus
What are my chances of turning out right?
And what kind of man will I be?
If I’ll never fit in this world as I am
What do they do with mistakes like me?

If I’ll never fit in this world as I am
What do they do with mistakes like me?

Orange Tabby (It’s the Same Old Pain)
by Bobbie Gallup ASCAP © 2006

Old black man standing on the shoulder
Waiting for the cars to pass
I was slowing down to turn
That’s when I saw the cat
A big old orange tabby
Lying in the other lane
Saw the old guy wipe away his tears
And I had to do the same

I could see his heart was breaking
Cause he’d just lost his friend
And I’d have done most anything
To bring that cat back again
I’ll probably never shake his hand
And I’ll never know his name
But my heart went out to him
Cause losing hurts us all the same

CHORUS:
I cried all the way to work
Cause I felt the hurt
Of losing you all over again
It happens when I least expect it
Sometimes it goes undetected
But it’s the same old pain

We can’t prepare ourselves for it
We rarely know the time
It hurts the most when we don’t get
The chance to say goodbye
One minute you were here with me
The next moment you were gone
Though I know I must let go
My heart just won’t move on

BRIDGE:
I watched the old man in my mirror
As he picked his companion up
Wrapped him gently in his coat
And he held that broken body close
As I'm sure the good Lord did for you
The day he called you home

CHORUS:
I cried all the way to work
Cause I felt the hurt
Of losing you all over again
It happens when I least expect it
Sometimes it goes undetected
But it’s the same old pain

Yeah, it’s the same old pain

THE BALLAD OF BOB DYLAN
© Norman Lamont
He flew in from Miami with a bagful of bones
I was singing in the airport bar, just to pay off some loans
Two sleepless eyes in an unmade face
He saw me at the bar, he said "This must be the place!"
Said he was looking for a room for the night
He said his name was Bob Dylan, I said "Ha ha, right!"

He spent the night at my place on a couple of chairs
In the morning he was up and off and down the stairs
I found him in the marketplace, busking for cash
Playing my guitar in a rough and ready kind of fashion
A voice like a hangover looking for a cure
I said you sound like Bob Dylan, he said "Why sure."

Twenty miles away, high security hospital
They were looking for a guy who'd jumped the wall
They were looking in the streets they were looking in the zoo
No way of knowing what this kind of man might do
They only thing they'd got on him while he was away
Was he was into Bob Dylan in a big big way.

My friend with his busking made a couple of pounds
And with a couple of mine that got a couple of rounds
We sat there reminiscing back down the line
To the sixties, how we hadn't recognized them at the time
When this guy burst in, grabbed my friend by the sleeve
And says 'I'm Bob Dylan' - I thought Man, time to leave

They got stuck into each other, I never saw the stranger's face
Barman's yelling at me Get these guys outta the place
Spitting out language, they were spitting out blood
It was like watching Cain and Abel, before the flood.
Got out to the street and the stranger was gone
My friend Bob Dylan just picked up his bag of bones

(This is what he told me ...)

'That guy there used to be a country western star
Who put down his roots and never wandered far
With his Jewish mama and five kids on the farm
It had been too damn long since he'd done any harm.
His wife cut his throat, he had to get born again
I got his job, he's been after me since then.'

What about the bones? He said 'I carry them with me
They remind me of a guy I knew in 63
He could have been a big shot, I told him back then
But he turned into a junkie - well I ain't no judge of men.'
That was his tale, as the evening wore on
When I woke up in the night Bob Dylan had gone.

He'd taken my guitar and my cowboy boots
My country singing tie and my country singing suit
Left me his bones, and some kinda book
It might have been a Bible, I never got time to look
'Cause they kicked down the door, they walked in real slow
They said 'We're looking for Bob Dylan' I said 'Whaddya know?'

These days I don't work much, guess I'm past my prime
I'm growing me a beard, that passes the time
I'm living in the country but I'll get across the wall
When I get a better grip of my short-term recall
Some days I feel bitter, some days I feel worse
I just write another song and play it to the nurse.

“The Crowd” © 2005 Doug Barnett
The tattooed girl leaned to the mic
A little more than she should
Drowning the guitarist
Who wasn’t all that good
Emotion in her voice sang out
Of pain she’d never see
You’d think this hardened city girl
Was from the hills of Tennessee

The crowd ignored everything
And looked the other way
Their meal was more important
Than whatever she might say
She just kept on singing
Lost inside the song
Escape from her reality
Just three minutes long

His face was turning red before
The young man took the stage
His movement stiff and awkward
Like his brain just disengaged
Forgot the words the first time
Then started up once more
Dead on key, the sound was gold
As he looked at the floor

The crowd ignored the whole event
Pretending not to see
Wondering about the time
Or what was on TV
He just kept on singing
Pure as morning rain
Short three minute heaven
This world could not contain

Ancient lines stood out upon
His weathered old stone face
He’d seen a thousand microphones
Each in a different place
Played his magic guitar strings
With well worn expertise
Gravel voice croaked out the tune
Like a dusty summer breeze

The crowd turned to watch the show
And forgot about his beer
The aging barfly coughed once
Then choked back a tear
The old man kept on singing
As he had through out his life
He loved the songs like children
And the singing, like a wife

The Invasion Of Chelsea
Shandy Lawson

"It was our darkest hour,"
Is what everyone said
About the day the town of Chelsea
Got turned on its head--
When the whole world gazed,
Bewitched and amazed
At the miracle that laid
At their feet

Widow Johnson's Chevy
(one wheel in the grave)
Took to losing oil
At a most alarming rate
And it left a stain,
A mark on the terrain
That forever changed
Little Chelsea

Upon returning home one day
Widow Johnson saw the stain
In a most familiar shape--
The face of the Virgin Mary

She called out to her neighbors,
And they called out to theirs
And before you could say a Hail Mary
The whole town was there
And it filled the street,
The sound of shuffling feet--
They all came out to see
Her blessed driveway.

The pretty girl from the evening news
And the kid from the Chelsea Press
Took turns asking questions
About which driveway was blessed
And it made front page
It was all the rage...
Folks of every age
Came to Chelsea.

By noon the hotels all were booked
Widow Johnson's whole house shook
They were on the roof to get a look
At the face of the Virgin Mary.

Maps to the scene were sold on every corner
You can take the walking tour for twenty bucks
Replicas for sale are all hand-painted,
And guaranteed to bring you divine luck

("Binoculars for rent-- only five dollars
And guaranteed to provide immaculate perception.")

The excitement reached a fever pitch
'Til someone in the crowd
Said, "The stain looks less like Mary,
And more like Charlie Brown."
And they all went quiet...
Someone said, "You're right."
And they receded into the night
'Til the street was empty.

The sun came up on Chelsea
Widow Johnson surveyed the scene
That oil-stain on the driveway
Would take all day to clean
And she swept the street
Cleaned up the debris
It was back to the old routine
In Chelsea

THE MARGARITA SONG (I DON'T WANNA PLAY)
By Dennis J. DeRenzo Copyright 2005

I play the guitar in a little Tiki bar, on the intracoastal waterway,
Six nights a week from 5 to 9, and a Sunday mornin’ matinee,
I must know the words to a thousand songs, I even know the chords to a few
And I do my best to play every request but there’s one song I just won’t do….

(chorus)

I don’t wanna play that margarita song any more,
I been playin’ that damn song every night since nineteen seventy four,
If I hear it again, it’s gonna drive me insane,
So I don’t wanna play that margarita song any more.

The tourists come in with their bright red skin, lookin’ like the tourists do,
With a Mickey t-shirt, a sun visor hat, wearin’ shorts with black socks and shoes,
They sit down and order up the early bird and I know that it won’t be long,
They’ll get up from the bar, put a dollar in my tip jar, and ask for the same damn song…but

(chorus)
I don’t wanna play that margarita song any more,
I been playin’ that damn song every night since nineteen seventy four,
If I hear it again, it’s gonna drive me insane,
So I don’t wanna play that margarita song any more.

Now don’t get me wrong, I love a “Jimmy” song,
But there’s somethin’ that’s just gotta be said,
Just because I’m holding a guitar in my hands,
Don’t mean I got a parrot on my head!

So come on down to my little tiki bar on the intercoastal waterway,
Have a bite to eat, have a drink or two, listen to me sing and play,
I’ll do a little country, a little rock’n’roll, I’ll even doo-wop for you,
And I’ll do my best to play your every request, just remember my one little rule,

(chorus)
I don’t wanna play that margarita song any more,
I been playin’ that damn song every night since nineteen seventy four,
If I hear it again, it’s gonna drive me insane,
So I don’t wanna play that margarita song any more.

The Same Mary
by Kathy Hussey ©2004 rakukat music, bmi, all rights reserved
I’m over here in the corner
At yet another family affair
It’s strange to be the old relic
Propped in this rocking chair
The kids are all frightened of me
They only come with Mom’s hand at their back
It’s okay
There’s no way
They could know that...

I’m the same Mary
Who once was her daddy’s little girl
I’m the same Mary
The pillow fight champion of the world
Catcher of lightning bugs,
Bull frogs and garden slugs
Climber of sky-tall trees
I’m the same Mary

They raise their voices at me
So I’m sure to hear what they say
Usually some pearl of wisdom like
“Are you feeling okay?”
Young men rush to my rescue
When I show signs of wanting to stand
I don’t need it yet, but I accept
Cause they don’t understand

That I’m the same Mary
Who danced ‘til they threw us out at dawn
I’m the same Mary
Who played tackle football on the front lawn
Fixer of broken joys,
Mother of four strong boys
Coach, and referee
I’m the same Mary

But then he comes in the room
Not just a tired old man, but the love of my life
And I’m saved by his wink at my cranky ways
Cause I know that in his eyes
I’m the same...
shy little thing in pearls
prettiest of all the girls
just like the day he met me

I’m the same Mary
It’s just me...
The same Mary

Two Pairs Of Feet
© 2006 Annie Tennisco, Mike Amason

V1
Came home early from the nightshift
Took my shoes off at the door
Tossed my coat up on the hall tree
And tiptoed across the floor
I didn’t call her name
I knew she’d be fast asleep
I saw the covers moving
And then Two Pairs Of Feet.

V2
I thought it was a nightmare
Maybe this was not my house
I opened up my mouth to yell
But not a sound came out
I thought about our children
In their rooms on either side
I wondered what she’d tell them
In the morning when they cried

Ch1
It hurt to know I’d been a fool
As blind as I could be
The woman I had always loved
Was only using me
We vowed to love forever
Sharing the bitter and the sweet
And to walk our path together
On our Two Pairs Of Feet

V3
I’m not sure what I was thinking
Or if I was at all
I eased my way back to the den,
And my shotgun on the wall
I couldn’t see it in the dark
Hot tears filled up my eyes
When I flipped the light switch
I got my second big surprise

V4
My wife sat up and looked at me
She scared me half to death
She was sleeping on the couch
I finally caught my breath
She said, “I tried to call you,
I never could get through.
Jack and Sue are staying the night
I let them use our room.”

Ch2
It hurt to know I’d been a fool
As blind as I could be
The woman I had always loved
Was still here loving me
We vowed to love forever
Sharing the bitter and the sweet
And to walk our path together
On our Two Pairs Of Feet

coda
There’s one more thing I’d like to say
Before this song’s complete
A couch is plenty big for love
And Two Pairs Of Feet

Where All Kids Make the Team
©2006 Jules J. Dobrowolski

Verse

Baseball tryouts ended early, I could see that he’d been cryin’
He said, “I didn’t make the team Dad, but it’s not for lack of tryin”.
“I just can’t seem to move like the other guys.”
Just then I gave my son a hug and helped him dry his eyes.

The next day I took him for some tests just to set my mind at ease
When the doctor asked me if I’d heard of Lou Gehrig's disease.
Lord, I never felt so helpless and alone,
But, the next words he spoke just cut me to the bone.

Chorus

He’s going to a place where all kids make the team.
No one ever gets cut.
It’s every young boys dream.
Where the sun shines every day,
And, they all get to play
He’s going to a place where all kids make the team.

Verse

Well, these last few months were really tough. I would wheel him to the games.
I never ever saw him cry. Never once heard him complain
But, there was that one time when he saw me crying.
He said, “It’s O’kay Dad. I know that I’m dying”.
“But, when I get there you know I won’t be sitting on the bench.
You can bet I’ll be putting ‘em right over the fence.
So, it’s really not as bad as it might seem
‘cause where I’m going everybody makes the team”

Repeat Chorus

Bridge

You know I’ve never been the kind that likes to boast
But, I know he’s suited up, and the good Lord is his coach
And, I’m waiting for that day
When I’ll finally get to see him play
In that special league where all kids make the team

Chorus

He’s gone to a place where all kids make the team
Playing third base that had always been his dream
Where it’s always perfect weather
And, each day’s a double header
In that special place where all kids make the team.

Tag

They’ll be cheering in the stands
For my little third baseman
In that special place where all kids make the team

Whiskey Wild Bayou Child
©2004 Michael Thomas Ellis

It’s nine oclock, Friday night, down at the Wild Bayou
Everybody looks for her, like always, right on cue
Been that way for months on now, every single week
She walks right in, sits right down, not a word to speak

She takes her whiskey sittin' down, down by the exit sign
Same place that she always sits, same table every time
Two for her, and two for him, but he’s not waitin’ there
She's way too young to drink alone, but life ain’t always fair

Whiskey Wild Bayou child
Raven hair and sad sad eyes
Why do you sit there all alone
In that corner out of sight
Whiskey Wild Bayou child
Where is your man tonight

She lines those double shooters up, sips ‘em til they’re gone
Fidgets with her diamond ring, and sways to each new song
Coming from the jukebox, until the clock strikes ten
Stands up slow, walks on by, and drops a quarter in

Then she moves out to the dance floor and wraps her arms around
Her shoulders as she dances to that same old lonesome sound
A song about a well-loved man who won’t be coming home
And a woman who still waits for him, who never will let go

Whiskey Wild Bayou child
Raven hair and sad sad eyes
Why do you come here all alone
Every Friday night
Whiskey Wild Bayou child
Where is your man tonight

(musical bridge)

Whiskey Wild Bayou child
Raven hair and sad sad eyes
Why do you come here all alone
Every Friday night
Whiskey Wild Bayou child
Where is your man tonight

Whiskey Wild Bayou child
Where is your man
Where is your man
Where is your man tonight
