Stacey,

I spoke with Erika Luckett here in Indy last night.. she said she'd be happy to get involved with the local chapter when she's in town. (She tours about 9 months of the year). She's VERY connected to the music industry up there and has a big role in a movie coming out this spring playing a female singer songwriter with a bunch of other stars in the movie... it should be great.

Things have died since we lost our open mic coordinator in the spring. Also, as Stacey mentioned on the other thread, the location closes early which means early hours affect attendance. There IS a lot of open mic competition but since the Voodoo has closed, I think there is a group of their Monday night regulars looking for fun. I think the key is finding a good venue. just my 2 cents.

Hmmm.. as large as SF, Berklee, Oakland etc.. are, I can't believe there isn't a single venue that wouldn't like to have an extra 30-60 people out in it on a slow night?

When did the Voodoo close? Have they reopened?

I am here in the bay area. I am a new member of JPFolks. I have met some people here and entered my song "Dancing Shoes" in your contest. I really think this forum is really cool. I will keep my ear to the tracks and see if I can't find a venue for the the SF JPFolks chapter. I am in the group bluejuju (bluejuju.net) and play out in the clubs so I know a few club owners. Also, for anyone reading this and is in the bay area I am into collaborating. OK...thanks JPFolks. JIM

Hi, I'm new to this group and just registered. I host an Open Mic on Wednesday nights at the Canvas Cafe in SF. Been a real success for the past several months. Clubs seem to come and go, we just lost Hotel Utah, but the music keeps on keepin' on. But only if we make it.

The West Coast Songwriters Assoc hosts a few open mics around the Bay Area on a monthly basis. When it's crowded, you only get to play one song, but that's better than nothing.

Wow.. Hotel Utah is closed now too? I was there my last night in SF on the last roadtrip there.. amazing.. 2 of the 4 venues we used are gone in a year. We also did a show in Berklee, San Jose and with the NCSA (now WCSA I guess). So much for building a tradition eh?

Utah has been in trouble for quite some time. I personally think the open mic circuit was oversold and the work situation is getting better so non pro's (like me) don't have as much time on their hands for playin out. And of course, the real estate market never cooled off so owners can likely make more money using the real estate for other purposes. I've been to the Canvas Cafe once or twice but it is on the other side od town and in a parking challenged neighborhood.

Hey Tuhker, Jim- Blue JUJU I am Eddie's friend- Open mics/ Fogfest!!
Things are changing around here...Our Voodoo Open mic did pretty good (most nights 16-25 [performers)til they sold it- Utah was great (35-50 performers)til they sold it...
The Monday Night open mic is looking for a new slot- TheSF JPF Meeting/OPen Mic..we Started strong- but tuhker if you reemember it was alot of work for on the most part Only could get 6 or so people to come out consistantly....
Location did not serve alcohol- could be it for some?? The Early hours for others....
Also with such a strong free open mic community...and with so many options of producing our own showcases, and open mic nights...We still have many of our members, and just stopping by musicians doing this weekly, monthly at various locations-... So there are plenty of things to do/ opportunity to perform!!I think most of the JPF Family contribute to JPF on line or at JPF showcases/Awards....
WCSA Is alive, well and strong! Consistantly at the members come out to contribute at the 5 yes 5 monthly open mics at Various locations....One of which is the same location JPF meetings/Open Mic's were held.

We have hightlighted traveling JPF at our other Open Mics...so continue to let me know when coming through and see the list posted in SF chapter--- Several open mics have closed this year...about 6 or more- but new ones have popped up....Everynight there is one or more open mics you can stop by and contribute to...Some have the great sound, others the great company, or location..SF Bay Area has loads of options...
So SF is alive and full of Music....So come out and and share with us!!!

Hi y'all -

Just wanted to perform a little public service and make sure everyone was aware that the former Hotel Utah Open Mic is (until at least late March) now being hosted by the Independent Community Arts Network (ICAN), 1310 Mission Street (at 9th), directly across from the Guitar Center.
Patrick Simms, a fellow AFM #6 musician and compadre that I've run into as a sound guy at the Paradise and an MC at the People in Plazas concerts, is the amiable host. I spoke with him just the other day and he said about 30 people are showing up every time. His email is psstudiosf@aol.com if you have more questions. Have fun!
