Musica,
thank you for the listen and the comments, we recorded this cd at 2 different studios and out of 10 songs we did this was the first one, it is mastered and packaged now but as I went through some of the other tunes I did some doubling and achieved that edgy sound, maybe if someone takes a liking to this song I'll get a chance to redo it...thanks again...all the best...Moker

Moker,
I have used 3 different browers, tried hifi & lowfi the last 2 days, but have not been able to play your songs. It either knocks me offline or just sits there saying "loading", but never plays. I can play others on SC, so I have no idea what the deal is.
Ben

FINALLY got to hear it, Moke. Very good. Nice and catchy. It may be a tad long, but since you have a paucity of lyrics, it'll be a snap to cut 'er down, if need be.

Moker: This one cooks. Reminds me of all the real great rock groups. Got an eighties vibe to it. Strong solid production. Good vocals. I like to hear the vocals a litte more in front of the music but that's may be just me.

Good Stuff!

Ben,
Sorry you had trouble buddy...you are the first one to mention you couldn't pull it up , glad you were finally able to, musicians are the hardest to please when it comes to songs, riffs, recordings, and knowing you as I do, I'm really glad you like it. My hopes are high, and regardless, I'm writing every week...thanks for the time and I could cut out a round of chorus at the end if i needed to at some point you're right...this one is mastered and pressed for now...all the best....Moker

Paul,
My wife is from PA., Pittsburgh to be exact, so I like where you're comin' from!! Thanks for the encouragement on Ready To Fly, I have had such good response on that song when we play it live I just figured it might be our first single to run up the ladder so to speak...it is good to get the feedback about the vocals, I spent so much time on pitch and harmonies, I guess next go 'round I'll have to make sure they are a bit more out front...I did some doubling on some of the other tracks and that seems to help as well...anyway thanks again...Moker

Howdy Moker!!

Man...you guys smoke! Love this stuff. Yeah, I am one of the country folks but mostly because that is what is accessible to use folks who want someone else to cut our stuff. But I was raised on good ol' Rock 'n Roll, so this is good stuff.

BTW..I saw the great commentary you wrote about Jimmy and Amy on the Sound Connection. Sweet. I never met them but know "of" them via my friend June McHugh for whom Jimmy worked for many years. Congrats also on winning the new guitar!

Hugs,
Bobbie

PS...my fav is It Will Come Back!! LOVE THAT!

Sounds great!
I'm a BIG Classic Rock fan so this one's right up my alley.

I'd love to see the lyrics written out? All I'm really catching is the hook, "Ready to Fly." Great groove here, guitar, drums all sound great. It felt only a tiiiiiiny bit repetitive on the chorus towards the end. Not bad though--just an itty bitty nitpick. Another thing I'd love to hear on this is more backing vocals & harmonies (but this is coming from a die-hard Queen fan, so consider the source and ignore me if you like!)

My opinion here... keep practicing Jimi and skip the country unless you MUST to put food on the table... do what comes naturally and that you LOVE... it will show in your stage performance too, that energy and passion for the music.

Terrific sound for just three guys! I wish you luck and success!

Linda

Bobbie,
I too write alot for the country market to which I'm yet to break in...I can't figure out how to make it sound country with this band , that's why I was asking you about the demos...sad about Amy,Jimmy lost his best friend there...
Thank You so much for your comments and time to listen to my stuff...I am just starting to promote this and really don't have a clue, but comments from folks whom I respect as much as I do you tell me I gotta keep going...the little voice inside me tells me that pretty much all day everyday...
That guitar I won has a really sweet sound when using a capo...I have written 4 or 5 tunes in the last month on that lil buggger...think I'll keep it around

Bobbie,
you continue to inspire me...thanks alot...

Moker had to come back at you when you mentioned Pittsburg. I do believe an almost famous rocker named Grushecki (sp?)came from Pittsburg and played a lot of rock around that area for years and played with SPringsteen a few times and is still around. You reminded me of him, although your stuff has a later eighties sound as I said before.

I'm mostly a Philly person. Grew up just outside of there...went away for a while and eventually came back. Probably die here writing songs.

Linda,
I have been to your site and enjoy your stuff as well...I wish I could do vocals like Queen, I do have some 2 part harmony and even a little 3 near the end of Ready to fly, I think some of the mix gets lost a little in these mp3's? next cd I will spend more time on the vocal tracks for sure...for now I gotta go with what I've got, I could probably cut 15-20 seconds off of that end chorus if the right publisher asked me to...ha...well one can dream right?!Thanks You very much...Moker

Hi Moker,

This is a Smoker [Linked Image] This is some of the best Rock/Pop
I have heard on this forum to date. Hey the bands really good.. tight execution, good sound. Like the vocal vibe and especially good parts/lines & chops by the players.

Dont know enough about you yet to know if commercial or marketing success has much importance to you guys or you more or less enjoy writing, recording and gigging for your own personnal rewards. Which believe me I am starting to think may be the only reason to even bother these days [Linked Image]

If the commercial rewards are one of the goals you guys seek then I can pin point the reasons this song is not a Hit
Weak points/strong points

The main reason is there is no chorus. - weak point
Strong point - Great intro very catchy
Strong point- catchy verse, catchy melodies in general
Weak point - Lyric, Not enough substance and if it's gonna be a fun light hearted song it doesn't have enough of that direction.
Strong point - GREAT Length, good arrangement overall but those first (2) teach me how to fly" feels to long.
But the lack of Chorus is the main snag followed by the lyrics.

Great sense of song, excellent execution by the band, sound is real good, Great potential I have to listen to some more songs. In my opinion you guys are close to something that can separte you's from the pack.

Hiya Moker,
Thanks for your reply, and I tell ya, if I can help you in some way with adding vocals/harmonies or lyrics, just holler. [Linked Image] I am a writer after all.
I'm afraid I have to agree with Sub though--he has a good ear and valid arguments. That said--you do have a GREAT overall sound, esp. for just 3 guys. You play very well together. Would LOVE to see you go places!!

Sub,
Thanks for your time and review on Ready To Fly
Sometimes we make recordings and almost always there is something we would go back and do differently
This particular song I used a producer who is a friend of mine that played bass with Flock of Seagulls and toured all over the place. EMI helped him set up a killer studio which is where this was recorded...
I'm going to print the lyrics here just as a point of reference

Ready To Fly
v.1 How do you stay so cool?
seems I've often been a fool
climbing I don't get that high
see you up there I wonder why?

chorus:
teach me how to fly
will your love take me that high?
oh, teach me how to fly
will your love take me that high?
I'm Ready to Fly

v.2
it all seems so easy for you
in my dreams I watch what you do
I can not rise from my bed
I'm flying but just in my head

chorus:
teach me how to fly
will your love take me that high?
oh, teach me how to fly
will your love take me that high?
I'm Ready to Fly
I'm Ready To Fly
I'm Ready To Fly
I'm Ready To Fly

double chorus

I agree with alot of your comments, when I went in the studio I had a little lead break in the middle and it just didn't end up being in the cut, would I change it for the right circumstance...you bet your ass...
I am looking to get my songs cut or used in tv, film projects, etc. so your direct comments are appreciated , the lyric is not too deep, just a dream about flying...overall it has been received well, I have heard the lyric comment before though,I played it for a guy at Razor & Tie last month, so what do I do...I guess since my version of this cut is done , I reconsider it if I go back to recut it, or stay open to a cowrite if there is a publisher/artist interested...Thanks again for your time...Moker

Okay Moke, I know you're here now....Have you given up on Paul? Football's winding down, bud. Could be the easiest stepping stone we'll ever find!

Hi Moker,

Thanks for taking the constructive criticism like a Pro.
Once in a while that back fires on me [Linked Image]

I totally understand what your saying and I believe this would work great in film & TV as is! I had some songs placed into a film last year.
The quality is definitly at the right level all around to do so. And the BEST thing about that situation is they may only use 30 seconds or 15 seconds of the song. So that great intro of yours could be in a scene or another section of the song in another scene. You have all great sections in this song so anyone of them could work well with a scene. Glad to see you thinking along those lines
I focus almost all of my work towards that area (hard as it is also) the top 10 radio scene is like in Nevernever land [Linked Image]

You got everything you need here as far as the film shopping goes.
I was focusing a bit on the overall commercial success and putting the song over the top.
As a producer myself I worry about production and all kinds of things involved with that position. A big part of producing to me is arranging..

You have a chorus on paper but in the song you have what feels totally like a pre-chorus. I have written quite a few songs that have this same format. I hate to use the word format but you know what I mean. Im my songs i call this
The non - legit chorus. Now there are no rules really and some tunes have a vibe or something cool about the B-section that it works without a legit -chorus. I just try to stay aware of it when i'm shopping.

When in this format the last line is where the payoff comes
and not just because the title is there but in many cases the title happens to be there.

It sounds like your buliding up to a chorus
" teach me how to fly
will your love take me that high?
oh, teach me how to fly
will your love take me that high?

When you go around twice with the "teach me how to fly"
You are really building more tension.. So the "ready to fly"
came as a let down to me .
If it only happened one time before the "Ready to Fly' it may have been more chorusey.. then jump in with the "Ready to fly" Then maybe later in the song "Ready To Fly can get repeated more than once in that spot. it would work because of the shortened - "Oh teach me how to fly"
section.

Think back to Huey Lewis & the news I dont own any of there albums or where there T-shirts [Linked Image] But they were SUPER at crafting pop rock hits.

"The Heart Of Rock n Roll" see how the end of the section pays off when they sing "The heart of rock n roll as the last line. It really pays off and your not even thinking about chorus or pre-chorus.. If you notice somthing that usually means trouble..It's all about flow and you guys got a great flow.

Your other songs probably dont even have this snag and i went and listened to this one only, [Linked Image]

I usually go pesty like this when someone is so frigging close to a hit [Linked Image]
Thanks for listening and for being Cool!

Peace

Hi again Moker,

I checked them all out Very good stuff! Sounded Great!
It's funny cause "Ready To Fly" has the only comment that says "with killer chorus"
Meanwhile ever single other song there had the stronger chorus.
I knew that when I said it in the last post that I would find the rest to be no without that problem [Linked Image]

The 2 strongest for commercial appeal are
"Right In Front Of Us" & "It Will Come Back"

Your arrangement in "Right In Front Of Us" was perfect
That quick change to the 3 time repeat was hooky and memorable. That's exactly what i was talking about.
It went shorter on the first change and gave you a better landing.

Great stuff and best of luck, keep us posted [Linked Image]

Peace

Sub,
Man, you are one cool guy...taking the time to review my stuff like that...I am fairly critical of my own stuff and my drummer is anal about it...your suggestions on Ready to Fly are logged for future consideration...the Right in Front of Us song is a ball on guitar and being my main instrument it's fun cos it's busy and took me about twenty times playing it before I could sing it while playing it...ha...we play live occasionally so I have to be able to sing it and play it, it's easy to get spoiled multi-tracking in the studio...It Will Come Back was the engineer's favorite cut, and alot of girls like that one too, it has that real palletable vocal track with plenty of harmony...my problem now...where do I start to market this stuff for film and tv...thanks again...Moker

Great classic rock sound. Really enjoy it. If that is you in the picture with the guitar, you remind me of Roy Orbison (must be the sunglasses [Linked Image]).

This is first rate all the way. Well performed and produced. The only thing I can offer is that a lift on the last line of the chorus "I'm Ready to Fly" would add a little excitement and segue into the verse a little better. Just my impression.

Good job guys from a guy just down the coast a bit.

Rick,
thanks for the listen, we actually recorded this cut in Vilano Beach at Lou Rubino's studio...Lou is a great guy and is actually from St. A, he's with Sony and touring the country with "story side b" now
I would probably arrange this song a bit different next time I cut it, but for now it is what it is, and you know us songwriters we would probably change something about most every song, except the one we just wrote that we haven't cut yet!!
Thanks again Rick...all the best...Moker

Howdy Moker!

Nice tune!

Took the liberty of listening to a minute or two of the other 5.

The first thing that I noticed was not a song, but the similiar timbre of your voice to Colin Ray from Men at Work.

I can certainly hear the other influenes you mentioned.

I for one am a fan of three piece bands. It takes some gusto to go live and entertain.

The recordings sound great! There isn't a particular style that has been established other than the format. Keep writing, it sounds promising! Good stuff, keep it up!

Blessings,

Johnboy,
I grew up with and am still good friends with a guy who played bass for and toured all over the world with Rick Derringer, that's the first thing he said when he heard the cd...man, you sound like that guy from Men at Work..!! Now if I could just get my stuff on the radio like they were for awhile there...Yeah, 3 piece is alot of fun live, the rythym section has got to be badass, and guitar work has to be versatile enough not to get boring...we sometimes add a keyboards player for festival type gigs, but small stuff and parties we let it rip with 3...Thanks again for the listen...Moker

Howdy Moker!

Rick Derringer. "Hang on Sloopy" the official song of my alma mater Ohio State.

Derringer just played here in Fort Wayne. Read a bit more about his life story. Selling real estate on Florida's east coast, now there's a paying gig. Also, Sloopy was a nickname for a female organ player he knew, and felt sorry for.

I don't know anything, I only write great songs, but you do have tremendous potential.

I would say that the only way, (just my opinion)I can hear your commercial appeal going mainstream is for you to construct songs that feature your vocals. What I mean is that you have good songs, but the construct of the 3 piece band can be wide open, or confining. You guys are great musicians!

The 3 piece setup is fantastic if you are Stevie Ray or Clapton. What you have that is unusual, is your voice.

A good bit of the rest of your excellent work is hybrid, but predictable in structure. Let's hear those vocal melodies ringing out and carrying the songs. Maybe even no guitar solos, just riffs here and there. Now that will put pressure on your improvs, and test your melodic vocal abilities...

If I were going to listen to a band like yours or sign them, you would have to be a bit different than all those guys you emulate so well. Just remember, I don't know anything, but I do know music, and the difference between you and everyone that is similiar to you , is that you have a great and unusual voice, you just have to incorporate that voice in a manner that makes you cool, and at the same time, stick out like a very commercial sore thumb! Hey your already cool, I just mean making big money cool!

I wrote all this because you have that potential, and I care about people!

Johnboy,
Hey, thanks for the encouragement about the vocals, it doesn't come quite as naturally as the guitar playing, meaning I have to work at it a little more to get where I am comfortable to play it out...I don't consider myself a natural vocalist but I have heard that some like the quality of my singing, a producer on a Clapton album I met told me that after I played him a cut...anyway I will keep that in mind , maybe try writing a little more in that direction occasionally..thanks again...Moker

Moker,

We have a large Billfish tourney here every year and I believe it was 2004 that Rick Derringer was here...most notable was the kick-ass bass player...prob not the same guy...long poney tail...but Rick knows to have kick-ass bass players [Linked Image]...played his songs of course...but also did some Trower songs.

Tom,
Rick's a character, I was with a group, "One Track Mind" a few years back and opened for Rick at a Hooters Sponsored St. Pats Day Green Bikini Contest, tough gig I know...anyway that friend of mine met Rick there and toured Europe, the states, and the orient with him...he ended up getting out because he was helping Rick write for an album and when it came time for co-write credits there was not going to be any co! the guy with the pony tail was playing with Rick when I met him, did he do that cool Beatles bass solo? You would remember...Rick's a great talent, but I really don't blame Eddie, Eddie is a great harmony singer and a whiz in the studio...Thanks for the listen and encouragement Tom...Moker

Moker,

Don't remember bout the bass solo...but I was real busy at the time...I do the computer work for the tourney...big Marlins...one year 1,046 pounds...last year...976 pounds...paid out over a million...the marlin last year was worth about 200,000...The year Rick played...people were wondering "who's Rick Derringer?" but they rocked the place...had a bikini contest also...
