"YOU'RE THE WAY" http://artists2.iuma.com/IUMA/Bands/New_Yesterdays/index-2.html (Second song there) I'm singing and playing this retro song of ours in the style of "maybe" a Sinatra and his band, or similar, (NOT a sound-a-like though,,,,,just my "alter musician" in me I guess). Not another Beatles or Beach Boys influenced song as is often the case, or a film theme. Just was Fun to do! John Daubert [This message has been edited by dhsongs (edited 05-01-2003).]

Hi John,
It was fun to listen to as well! However, I think you're a little young to run with the rat pack!

John Great stuff The song idea is special but the mix did not help the idea - probably because there is so much going on The Bass line makes a swing song like this but the Bass could not cut thru the homogenous parts. I wish it was sharper because the lines flowed very well indeed creating 'almost' a counter melody. I reckon this is a better song than anything on that embarrassing "Swing" Album by Robbie Williams. I love hearing something different and this certainly is. The Vocal levels started off sounding not bad and then slowly dropped back in the mix though. I was just about to say the voice needs to be lifted but NO. The pother parts need to be seperated or lowered. I really liked your big band sound but the reproduction of same is possibly a mixers nightmare! [ Then again maybe its an mp3 /or Hi-Fi Stream problem and your main file mix is OK ?]
Nevertheless this has the potential to be a great filler song for any swing type CD.
Good and brave work John Tony

Thanks for the "pretty cool", Kaley!
Rob, Is 50 young? Thank you! Oh yes! Thank you! (God,,,it looks old in print though. ):
Tony,,,,,good points! Thanks for the suggestions. I just edited for more bass. This was recorded like our other songs, just on a portastudio cassette recorder. I think tape saturation is one thing I overlook when playing a lot of parts. Buddy and I hear parts, and want them in. We needed a 1 or 2 inch tape machine I guess. Don't care for midi all that much. Have Emagic, but don't like the midi sounds. Too sterile or something. No flex in the sounds. ????
Anyway,,,as I said, I added a decent amount of bass EQ and a little on the highs (to keep them in).
Thanks again!
John Daubert

John Had another listen after this mornings critique Don't know how you did it but, even though the Bass is still a tad boomy, it is much better and the vocals are up slightly It must be difficult working from a tape several years old. It starts out similar to Chris Rhea's "Lets Dance" and then gets distinctly big band. Sinatra or his ilk would love to sing something like this [ BTW; Did you read about Mcartney's plans to remix some old Beatles songs in a more simplistic form; dropping out strings and such like. He also wants to label the songs HE wrote without JL (Lennon & Mcartney was on everything) as Mcartney & Lennon. Needless to say Yoko is spitting blood at the idea. ] Best Regards Tony

Tony, I didn't remix it, but added EQ to the wav file using "CD Architech" by SoundForge. Should remix it though. "Time"! (especially since I remix so many times!) Yeah, Yeah, Yeah!,,,,,The New mixes on The Beatle songs will be great to hear! (Band like),,,like in the early days of them! Bet the bass will out front in "those" mixes. I have been reading on what's going on with Paul and his focus on himself. Guess he's wanting to make sure people in the future will know who wrote what. I think the new fans then would have done the same as the fans now,,,,and that is to find out who did what by the nature of being interested. Ego has always been there for McCartney, and is one of the reasons he is a good as he is, and has lasted this long being in top form at his shows. (Doesn't mean all artists need that though to be great). He asked Yoko for permission first, (the name switching), then when it was tunred down by Yoko, Paul decided to win yet another challenge. He is a survivor, but I wish he would just let things be what they were,,,as it didn't seem to hurt him any being the second name on all those songs. Oh well, huh? Perfectionists keep searching for ways to have things even better, (in their eyes). Thanks for the nice words and especially for the help in getting this song to sound better. I know it could be better still, now hearing what you said to do yet still falling short of that real good recording. Yeah,,cassette tape is easy to work with, but it does have it saturation aspects. I seem to like to keep layering,,,to get that full big band sound, or in other cases, full orchestration sounds. There are some we have with very little in them, and I find they are mroe appealing to some. I have to find a middle ground on the bigger production numbers. You and others have helped me realize this,,,so thank you! John Daubert

John The deeper I get into mixing technology, via the good advice from JPF forum advisors & members and reading on the internet, the more I believe that songs with too much Freq conflict (or "alot going on") need the attention of professionals with the best equipment and knowledge of how to use it. Just how many parts takes be beyond my tech means will vary, but I seem to get good results with about 4 Stereo Tracks and <9 Mono Tracks. Horns tend to take up alot of accoustic space for me which is hard to place in the spectrum. Anyway, its all there to learn. Concerning McCartney (corrected spelling), I think he should have a referendum thru the Beatles fan base to see what they think of his ideas before he alienates anybody. If he gets their approval then Yoko should go with the flow. Remember also there is a guaranteed market for purists to buy the NEW beatles catalogue with the revised credit notes....etc so Yoko stands to make quite a bit too. No matter how much money is in the coffers already, its all profitable new business when all is said and done Best Regards Tony

John, After a few days of heavy recording and mixing, I finally got back to this board! I liked it... a good lifter-upper "feel good" song! Good job, I really enjoyed it. I only heard this last mix, so I can't compare with what you had before, however, I did notice that the vocals were cranked pretty hard to the far left. Is that what you intended? Nothing wrong with that, but I usually like to hear the lead vocals closer to the center, at least on the verses and/or most of the song, but that's just my personal preference. Take care! Michael

Gerry,
Thanks! Young huh??? LOL!!! I would like to think so, and I do act 15 at times,,,but...!
Tony,
Good points about the more that is used, the more help that is needed. S lot to learn,,,especially when just using a cassette recorder all these years...never got out of it, except for a few times with midi, (emagic). Too sterile at the home use level. So we plugged the old tape machine back in, and bounce away!
Kaley,
It is a little clearer, and more bass, All Thanks to Tony! Thank you too!
Michael,
Here,,,,the vocal doesn;t sound that hard left. ????? Maybe something's not right here though. I know my right speaker is lower somehow,,,,and maybe I think the right is louder beacuse of that, but not thinking it;s too high for other people's speakers. ???? Does anybody else hear what Michael is refering to? Thanks for your nice comments too!
Joe,
You are always there with more than nice words Joe! Now find something wrong!!!!!
Hope everything is well!
Thanks,
John
