Hello everyone, My songwriting partner and I have had some good news in the last month, but am a bit confused as to what steps to take. Three of our songs have been chosen for projects by two different artist. All of them have been copywrited in our names, and we are getting licence agreements signed, but what now? We do not have a publisher for any of our material, and have not had any interest so we are thinking about going it on our own. Do we have to have our own publishing company before we think about mechanical royalties, or will they be so little it's not worth the effort to go through Harry Fox Agency. Also, do we have to have them actually on a CD before looking into ASCAP/BMI?? Thanks in advance...you all are great and have learned so much from this board in the short time I've been a part. No, you don't have to have your own publishing company. But it's advantageous to have it. Its not hard to start your own publishing company. The easiest thing to do is talk with the PRO that you're associated with, BMI/ASCAP/SESAC and find out what their procedure and contract is. Some charge money for it, some don't. In the long run, you will be better off owning your own publishing. Especially if you get major cuts. Then you can negotiate for them to take an administration fee on the publishing, or keep it for yourself (if you can work the deal right). Besides its an extra piece of the pie that you can keep for yourself when you fight for it. Congrats on getting the placements.
