OK, it SAYS anything music-related goes here, right? Forgive me if I'm off-base and I'll just drop it & go 'way. Today (Sept. 5) would have been Freddie Mercury's 60th birthday. I miss the guy. Wish I could have seen him live--such an amazing performer. I'm glad to know that part of my life I shared the earth with such a remarkably talented artist and songwriter. His voice alone has pulled me through some sad times and his determination and courage through huge obstacles has helped me want to pull myself up by my bootstraps. They have a website set up that is JUST amazing to look at (the graphics are fantabulous): http://www.loveroflifesingerofsongs.com There's a CD released in the UK today and a DVD, and a new biography due to come out next week. (So there's the music part. ) The website is mainly for donations to the Mercury Phoenix Trust, as set up by Queen and Jim Beach after Freddie's death, to help with AIDS research. If you choose, you can "sponsor" an online star from one of two constellations and leave a message for Freddie for any size donation. If not, you can still scroll through the constellations and read all the notes. Sorry if this is too geeky for some of you. Just ignore. Thanks for indulging me. Maybe a few of you will enjoy looking at the site, so I'm passing it along just in case. Am I the only Queen fan here? I doubt it... Linda, Wow! 60th I didn't realize.. Shoot when I'm always yaking about the music biz and industry I always seem to use Queen in this example. if breaking into the music biz was like a movie line you had to wait on to get in.. And Queen is on that line you turn around and GO HOME! Can't say that about one single group in POPULAR music today. I don't give 2 cents worth what anyone tries to run by me.. and i listen to plenty of current rock/pop groups. Queen will blow them out of the buliding! I have seen them live.. and they were not my favorite band either so i'm not just an excited fan.. I sat 14th row orchestra at The Garden all i did for the first 5 minutes was look all around the stage for more players hiding somewhere.. Rodger Taylor is so solid on the drums and his vocals are fantastic. Do drummers even sing anymore? It was like The Eagles" Four killer singers in one band.. actually they had five.. John Decon very tasty and did he not play the catchiest bass riffs... Under Pressure, (man that was a hit twice!) - Another One Bites The Dust" Hello!!! Bass Lines! Forget about Brian May, he is in a world all by himself. And with that guitar his Dad built, it is as unique as he is. Linda - The stage looked like it was moving closer to you.. and i don't use drugs They packed a LIGHT SHOW! and a tremendous stage presence.. makes "Queen Of the Stoneage" look & sound like cavemen playing with sticks & rocks.. Freddy sits down at a white grand piano and starts playing "Somebody To Love" all by himself... flawless vocal - I couldn't believe it.. The band joins, those vocal harmonies building the band is soooo tight. It's one thing to be a great band, but also a HIT making machine at the same time.. Great! & Popular.. what a concept! Queen & Freddy didn't just write songs they wrote anthems.. Played at every stadium in every sporting event from World Soccer to World Series to your local Bowling League and High School Teams till this day.. We Will Rock You / We Are The Champions Queen- What a unique band to.. Identifed in 2 seconds and they were monsters when there was still monsters walikng the earth - Meaning Other GREAT bands! In my Top 5 concerts I have ever seen And I have seen nearly EVERYONE. The first concert I ever saw was the band - YES Thanks for sharing the info I'll check it out.. AMEN, Sub! I knew I liked you for a reason. THANK YOU so much for posting your experience at a Queen concert. That was so cool to read. (like giving a fat kid a candy catalog!!) I was a high school kid when they were doing their final tours (which no one knew were final then) and didn't have ANY permission to go to rock concerts... (talk about being lynched, yikes). I know I missed out. I love the live albums and concert DVDs. The performances amaze me--and I'm sure it was far better in person by lightyears. --Dumb question, could you indulge me as to which show you went to? <sheepish grin> I can look it up over on the queenonline forum and read more about it. (OK. So I've turned into a nerd...) I'm not just a hyper fan either --it takes a lot to get my attention, and it's their sheer TALENT--all four of them--that have done that for me. It took me a while to clue in, but I got there. They had something together--a synergy--that I doubt the world will see again. There is no other band where EACH of the members wrote #1 hits. Nevermind that they've all STAYED hits. There are maybe 2-4 groups/artists in existence that I'm willing sit down and listen to everything ever recorded. Queen is at the top. There are a handful more artists I like a lot (enough to own, say 3-4 CDs, but none of them are modern or "popular." (Does that bode well for my songwriting career? hmmm) My teenage daughter likes some of the new alternative stuff, but she's searching out the classic rock too, as are a lot of her friends. She doesn't do Top40 either. Her friends officially think I'm "KEWL" because I play Queen in the car--LOUD. Think there's a reason she & her friends are searching backwards?? Uh--yeah. I enjoy being here at JPF because I find so many voices and styles I like hearing! Lots of talent! I shoulda looked into indies ages ago... (probably didn't due to lack of DSL & streaming radio until a couple years ago, plus being plain lazy--easier to complain than do something about it). Some of you have drawn my daughter over to listen too. So where did all the GREATS go (I know, they're still playing--county fairs), and more confusing, why aren't there any more? Is it true 'video killed the radio star?' (Queen passed even that test, lucky ducks.) (In fact they were among the first to ever release music videos... but I'll stop there) It's like watching the dinosaurs go extinct before your eyes. Couldn't they reproduce? Uh... OK, don't answer that. <snicker> You've seen everyone... how cool that must be. I've been to four pop/rock concerts in my life. I'm deprived, huh. (2 at Disneyland Senior Night [Mr. Mister & Miami Sound Machine], one in college [Amy Grant], one, my friend took me to Celine in Vegas 2 years ago.) I *DID* get to "We Will Rock You" in Vegas too which was an incredible show. I could gush but I won't. Oh wait wait wait--it's five--I walked out of an outdoor Fine Young Cannibals show in college--the fumes were making me sick & I had to go the car (not a drinker, or smoker of illegal recreational material...). I plan to fix that eventually... [Eeek! I mean concert-going not drinking, oy] Raising six young kids, it's hard to pull food outta their mouths to go see Def Leppard... missed that one last week. I am really digressing fast here. LOL, I'd better stop. If anyone got to the end of this ramble I think you deserve some Ben & Jerry's. Hi Linda & Sue My sisters and brother had 12 to 14 years of age on me. When I was 5 years old my brother had a band that practiced in our basement. Guess what song I remember them playing? Of course "Sunshine Of Your Love" & of course "Smoke On the Water" DP.. I was fooling around with his bass drum pedal and he says "Sub lol..no. Mike dont play with that pedal bro use this one." I was like why? He says that's Ginger Bakers pedal from the group "Cream" Someone snatched his pedal, sticks, and extra snare off a rotating stage at the Cream concert.. I have seen Tons more great shows then all my family combined.. BUT! he saw The Beatles, Cream and Jimi Hendrix.. I did not... just throwThe Doors in and you're pretty much set for life I will have to look at my stubs to get the years of the Queen concerts. But as you were saying they were amazing. They are touring in places today with Paul Roders the forner singer of Bad Company and Free.. He is a GREAT rock singer actually one of Freddies Favorites says the band. I love him but i didn't think he belonged in Queen at all.. But I gotta say he did a great job. But of course No Freddy No Queen.. Anway outside of the many incredible fusion/jazz'rock fusion shows and concerts I have seen there are of course the great rock concerts.. Just off the top of my head I have seen.. Yes Peter Frampton The Who The Stones Zeppelin Areosmith Queen Ted Nugent Jethro Tull Journey Sabbath Allman Bros Lyn Skyn Outlaws Marshall Tuck Molly H. Clapton Santana Genesis Floyd Jeff Beck Bowie Simon & Garfunkel Styx The Police U2 America Deep Purple Elton Springsteen Earth Wind & Fire (5) Steve Windwood Don Henley Peter Gabrial King Crimson Asia ELP Heart Joni Mitchell James Taylor Phil Collins The hell with Cold Play, watch Floyd perform "The Wall" Concerts are for crap now.. you do not get your moneys worth on a consistent bases like back then. Bruce Springsteen played for nearly 4 hours when I saw him and you know how hard he sings and plays.. he can still outlast kids less than half his age today. Also seeing "Santana" 4 times play for 3 hours + straight, 5th row in the rain.. He plays to the Heavens that guy. GREAT! peace Sub

Linda, I was on vacation at the Outer Banks in N. Carolina when Freddie passed over...I went out into the ocean & swam & floated & just kinda let the memories & tears flow...Water has a healing affect on me...I came back to dry land at peace, which I hope is what Freddie found. Sub - was that Garden concert around '76? I think I was there with you. And those flashpots Queen used on stage put off some serious heat. And YES for the Garden and Roosevelt Stadium shows around that time as well. Here's a link some Freddie fans may find interesting. http://www.queenconcert.com/ ------------------ Marty my home Experience is that marvelous thing that enables you recognize a mistake when you make it again!

Thanks for the link and all the info guys! Interesting article, though I got a wee bit tired of the metaphors after going through 4 pages of 'em. LOL Clever though! Thanks for sharing your memories, Midnite. Sue, I'll check out the song, thanks! I used to rhyme all the time, then it died and I cried. (sorry... couldn't help it) Sub--man what an impressive list. Whew. Does it count any that my husband and Jimi Hendrix went to the same high school? (True fact!) ...not at the same time... I'm 38 this year, so in '76 I was only eight. I wouldn't know what "rock-n-roll" was for another four years. Wanna talk about the day Elvis died? I heard it on the news first, and figured he must have been important if they interrupted my TV show to tell me about it. I went upstairs and asked my mom: "Who's Elvis Presley?" She hemmed & hahed a little, not sure how to describe him, and said "Well, he's a rock star. Why?" "Oh, well he died." Shock rippled throughout the room among all the grown-ups. Trippy moment for a kid. I had no clue what "rock star" meant at the time. If she'd said "singer," I'd have understood. (Funny thing is, my mom LIKED Elvis! So why weren't there Elvis records in my house? Where were the Elvis reel-to-reels? Why did we only seem to own Kingston Trio, Tammy Wynette, Hank Williams, and Charlie Pride?) So believe me when I say I never heard real rock until I had my own radio in my room. They weren't against it. They just didn't own or play the stuff. It still takes me a LONG time to match up songs with artists... hence my very late Queen-fan-blooming. I do remember the day Freddie died, but I was in the middle of exhaustion from having an infant and a one-year old to care for, and it didn't hit me then. Now I realize what the world lost that day. Rambling on again... see what happens when ya encourage me? <LOL> Linda ------------------ ==================== Linda Adams http://www.alyssastory.com

I was never a big Queen fan, but I was a big NY Islander hockey fan back in their glory days. I had season tickets, and they always played We Are The Champions during playoff games. Unfortunately, they've been dead way longer than Freddy Bill [This message has been edited by lijemtu (edited 09-07-2006).]

Oh yes Scott I saw her at the Boston Music Hall in the early 70's it was awesome..just her , a grand piano and 3 backup singers, doin her own material first then the Motown stuff. Probably one of the best concerts I ever saw and the most intimate... I have a whole collection of her songs and some old albums. I've always loved her, what a loss. So many Posts, so little time<sigh>,,, But I just hafta drop in here to give Laura Nyro her props!!!..I used to have an album of her greatest hits(Scott, she really was amazing, so keep on hunting)...Even as a youngster, I was always reading the songwriting credits, and Laura's name came up on 4 different songs....Written by..Covered by.. Stoney End...Streisand Wedding Bell Blues...5th Dimension And When I Die(probably not the title, but I can sing the whole song) Blood Sweat & Tears & 1 other song that my memory is failing me on.... I cried when I heard she'd died of cancer, but I had no one to cry with.... Now I can smile, because Scott & Sue have reminded me of how music touches everyone, and that I'm not alone in my 'remembering'...
