A song that I bring out at New Year in memory of those who have filled past years with laughter and fond memories. It would be best with each verse sung by a different person, preferably none of them me, and everyone joining in on the chorus. Probably best sung and listened to, if at all, while fairly drunk. I was when I recorded it. Happy New Year everyone!

Listen on SoundCloud

I posted a previous version here years ago under a different tittle. One of the suggestions I received then was to change the title back to "Overflowing" - so I did cool I've also learned a bit more about production since then, although that's still not exactly my strong point.

OVERFLOWING

Many the night that we have sat around this table
The tales we’d tell and the jokes that we would crack.
I’d put my arm around you now if only I were able
If only I could have you back.

We’ll save a place for you, my friend
Whom we’re so proud of knowing
And though the chair be empty now
Our hearts are overflowing.

Many the glass that we have raised to one another
Laughing eyes across the foam
This was a party that we thought would last forever
I cried when you went home

We’ll raise a glass to you, my friend
It is our way of showing
That though the glass be empty now
Our hearts are overflowing.

This old room still may ring with our laughter
At the memories that you left behind
But in our hearts there’s a before and there’s an after
A clock we can’t rewind

We’ll tell our tales of you, my friend
Until it’s time for going
For laughter’s never empty when
Hearts are overflowing

Unusual to see a sad one from you, Gavin.

Who is the "we" in "we'll".
I'm asking because in the first verse you have written:
"I’d put my arm around you now if only I were able
If only I could have you back".
Should it be "We’d put our arms around you now if only we were able
If only we could have you back"?

Nice sentiment though.

Vic

It's never too late? Yes it is, so do it now.

If, given time, a monkey can write the complete works of Shakespeare maybe there's hope for me.

Vic, there's a clue in the introduction above, where I said, "It would be best with each verse sung by a different person...and everyone joining in on the chorus." When I wrote this, I was thinking about a specific person in my life and imagined others who knew and loved him taking a verse each. That would be a bit limiting, obviously, but I figured the idea of one person describing his own feelings and those of the group was something that would work.

Yes, I have some sad ones too smile

This is very good, a great poignant heartfelt song for those weve missed, loved and cherished.
A great Irish song too and I can well see/ hear this being played at the end of a particularly liquid night out.
Great stuff!

Gavin,

What a pretty tune . . . sad, but touching and warm. Nice work on the production as well. As always, I’m digging the vocal. Not sure I’d enjoy it as much if different singers were sing each verse. I would think that may be distracting, but maybe not . . . and that idea may work better live than on a studio version. Enjoyed this immensely.

Regards,

Deej

Thanks John - more Scottish than Irish smile Yes, it's a song about good times, enjoyed with a drink, so only fitting that a drink or two or three should accompany the song.

Thanks Deej. Glad you enjoyed it. Yes, the alternating singers on the verses was something I imagined as a live performance thing. Actually, the ideal setting might be the end of a ceilidh, when everyone is tired from dancing and under the influence of a few pints of sentimentality.

Thanks for sharing, Gavin:

The influence of a few pints can bring out the melancholy... or nonsensical joy... in each of us. Enjoyed my listen and was impressed by your vocal.

Just listened to this song and it brings to mind a similar song oft-recorded titled "The Parting Glass". Familiar with it? Good luck with this one. Peace.

Yes, Brian, I know that beautiful song. It's a very old Scottish song, although a lot of people think it's Irish because so many Irish musicians have recorded it. To me, lyrically and melodically, it could only really be Scottish. My song is in the voice of those left behind rather than the one departing, but a very similar sentiment.
