I have an 18 minute comedy routine where I perform mostly my own material. I perform a couple cuts from songs that I have parodied - some verses, some choruses. It's only a total of 78 seconds from three different songs. I have the PROs, writers, percentages, etc.- but the cue sheet template that ASCAP(my PRO)provides only has user codes that don't cover my situation as I'm not using recorded releases - just my performances. Since there's a possibility of this going viral, I'm planing to upload it as a money earning video, although my original intent was to use it as just an audition video. Any recommendations?

Hmm... Interesting Summeoyo. Are these original songs of yours or parodied from popular songs? Do you own the copyright & publishing of the music used? John

I own the copyright and publishing to most of the material. The 78 seconds where I'm performing a parodied chorus or verse in my comedy routines is where I need help. I know I need to send cue sheets to the PROs. The SR copyright is really not involved here - it's the PA - because my performance is derived from another's intellectual property.

I think you'd need to get clearance to use that music from the publisher or Harry Fox Agency. They can probably direct you about the cue sheet issue. Best, John

I think you are allowed to use a few seconds from other songs without royalties coming into play, not sure how many seconds or if this is even true, so don't quote me, I'm no lawyer.

From what I've read before I posted my question, streams like those available on YouTube are treated the same as live cover performances. The creators of the songs used are entitled to performance royalties through their PROs even as I would collect such for my songs that are performed. The mechanical license becomes an issue if I would want to copyright(SR) the whole performance. I would first have to get licenses for the use - although only seconds - of copyrighted material. There would only be significant earnings if the thing went viral. If I'm wrong, someone please correct me.

Most Publishers will look favourably at a parody of any song they hold the copyrights
to as well as the Publishing, But dont expect a royalty cut of the original publishing ,
on any recording you make of their works , that is very rarely given. But of course
you can do a deal with any record company as a Band or a Solo Singer , that gives
you a Recording royalty on any album or single Vinyl and C D will give you the best rates
most music lovers have C D PLayers and many have Vinyl Players , in fact Vinyl sales
And Video D V D s Sales are growing year by year What Goes around Comes Around,
and maybe soon we can make Song Writing a Worth While Profession Once More
One of the most important principles of songwriting is to remember that a good song is a partnership of many different components, all working together to produce a satisfying musical experience.
In that respect, song components are either enhancing or compromising their combined effects.
