I'm wondering if I should be getting royalties for this Vimeo video: https://vimeo.com/63418865 Is Vimeo a royalty-free enterprise? I notice ASCAP royalties showing up on my statements for Apple Subscription, Google Play, iTunes, Rhapsody, Slacker, Spotify, and YouTube - but nothing for Vimeo. Best, John

You could file a copyright claim, OR contact the maker of the video and ask for your licensing fee. Likely they'll take it down. I am positive if you contact Vimeo and tell them an unauthorized video is using your music they will take it down. They are required to by law until the maker of the video can PROVE they own the music or have legal right to post it. Untold zillions of dollars of infringement happen every moment of every day on YouTube and they get away with it scot-free. I recall the VP of YouTube telling us in DC that she had 10's of millions to pay the owners of music being used on YouTube but that they rights orgs were fighting over it and thus, the statute of limitations were running out on them having to pay it out at all and they said they'd just keep the money if those who claimed they represented those owners couldn't come to an agreement. (It involved the PRO's, The Unions and some other entities all fighting over tremendous sums of money that, in my opinion, NONE of them had any right to in the first place. Most of the stolen music was from people like Just Plain Folks artists who were not part of these entities no matter how much they claimed it was true, and I said that directly to all of them in a large sold out auditorium where I got a standing ovation afterwards. But as I said at the time, that still didn't help all our folks being ripped off by the likes of YouTube, the biggest copyright infringer in world history.

No Brian, I was only wondering about ASCAP royalties. I did receive the upfront licensing payment from the publisher. I'm thinking Vimeo has some sort of royalty-free streaming. No big deal with me - just interesting as to what ASCAP monitors for royalties. And if anyone here had experiences with Vimeo. John

Okay, gotcha. No I have no direct experience, but in most cases the same policies guiding ASCAP collection of royalties would apply from any other source. Are you getting significant airplay there?

For the record, the traffic level of Vimeo is not even a trickle compared to those other services. Doesn't mean they aren't collecting, I am sure anywhere there's a dime (or not) ASCAP has come calling. Why not just call your Rep? That is the point of their existence no? Jody is a SESAC member so he won't have experience with Vimeo and SESAC does much better collecting than ASCAP for it's much smaller numbers.

Thanks Brian! I think the publisher keeps track of where their music is being used. I sent an email out. Best, john

Ah.. I incorrectly thought you self published your stuff! Of course I should have known with all those placements that wasn't likely the case. Did they come looking for you or you for them?

Yes, I decided I didn't need the stress of dealing directly with clients, though I have occasionally. Being an unknown entity , I've always approached them. Best, John
