"I Never Go Around Mirrors" is a sad country song indeed. The man in it is going to waste, never combing his hair or shaving his face. He is an alcoholic. Lefty Frizzell & Sanger Shafer wrote the song. Lefty was an alcoholic who died at age 47. Keith Whitley was also an alcoholic and literally drank himself to death at 33. The idea is that the man cannot stand to look in mirrors and see himself without his woman. He has a heartache to hide. He sees himself as half a man, and it tears him up to see himself cry. This song has been covered by many country singers, the latest being Sturgill Simpson. I love the self-pity!
