Footprints of the Past
In violet shadows of evening I pour myself some wine and let wand'ring mem'ries walk me down leafy paths of time I can't help but find traces where might-have-beens used to be in the rainy eyes of lovers I shut my eyes and see
footprints of the past that seem to go in circles though I've tried to live for duty with a sense of purpose time may stand still a moment but it won't sit on its hands so footprints of the past remain at forever's command
what a gypsy calls fortune is just a fork in fate when they were dark and deserted I've never gone straight for the scent of adventure hangs as sweet as hickory if I say I regret trying that's just wine's sad trickery
cos footprints of the past may seem to go in circles though I've tried to live for duty with a sense of purpose time may stand still a moment but it won't sit on its hands so footprints of the past will always show me who I am
when my dreams have traveled trails of mud and gravel and leaps of faith seemed to make me fall behind as I look back on those roads the Good Lord helped bear my loads cos I see His footprints next to mine
though footprints of the past may seem to go in circles though I've tried to live for duty with a sense of purpose time may stand still a moment but it won't sit on its hands so footprints of the past remain at forever's command

Thanks Jim...it's funny looking at this over ten years later and realizing how differently I'd write it now.
