Every Step of the Way © 2009 Gary Waters
I was out in the shed Working on that old tractor When the door opened up from behind
It was my youngest boy With a tear in his eye I said son what ya got on your mind
He said daddy…You've always been there Every step of the way I don't know what I'd do Without you here…with me everyday
I called him over to me Squeezed him tight and Sat him down on my knee
He said you and momma had a fight and you stormed out the door It's the same way Billy's daddy left And Billy doesn't see his daddy anymore
He said daddy…You've always been there Every step of the way I don't know what I'd do Without you here…with me everyday
I looked him in his eyes And in my own eye a tear I said son I'll never leave you And I pinky promised right there
With a smile on his face He ran back out the shed door And then I folded my hands and knelt on the floor
I said father…You've always been there Every step of the way I don't know what I'd do Without you here…with me everyday

Hi Gary, Welcome to the board Good writing Good heart wrenching story too common these days Excellent twist at the end. The main nit I'd have is the little boys words. Seems awful "grown up" words for a boy small enough to sit on your knee Still a good song Wy

Thanks for the comments. I did change the chorus around a little as I didn't think it flowed that great. The child calls his dad "daddy" and makes a pinky promise with him. I geared it around a child of about 8, same as my daughter and it seemed to work. She still calls me daddy, would pinky promise, still sits on my knee and her vocabulary far exceeds any words in this song. Thanks again...we'll see what others say...maybe it is too grown up(ish)

As Gary has said, the language for some children's speech may seem advanced but for many it is not.

A very typical yet common tearjerker ala the WAyne Newton classic "Daddy Don't You Walk So Fast." Hope the little boy in this song is lucky compared to most. But many people from broken and unstable families do go on to live quite successful lives and picture themselves winners rather than losers.
Peace, Brian

Thanks Geneva,
The song lyrics have changed a bit from the original version I posted here. The latest song version, by Neil and myself, is up 2 posts in the link. It's still a work in progress so stay tuned.
