Hi All, following on from a recent post, where Pam asked for some 'work in progress', I'm posting my latest effort in the hope of completing it. I read a newspaper article recently by a family psychologist who reprinted a letter from a young mother who had been given a terminal diagnosis. She was writing about what she was doing in order to give her young children memories of her after she had gone. It was inspiring and a remarkable legacy.
I wrote a chorus based on it but am lothe to intervene further into her story.
I have to make up a story of discovering this letter and probably returning it to its rightful owner.....a generation or two hence.........I think !!!
Anyway, the chorus is
I'm writing you a card for every birthday that I'll miss I'm sealing each one up with a loving goodbye kiss. I'm making you a blanket, one you can hug everytime you miss me. You'll know you're wrapped up in love.
I've a good tune for it and, as it develops, I'll post an mp3.
I intend getting the completed song to her family some way and, if it works out well, donating it to a charity.
Any advice, suggestions or input would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Tom.

Tom,
I'm thinking you will have to set the scene first, with the reason why someone would do that. Perhaps you could start with laying out what the woman has, what's precious. Also, it could be something which she wishes her mother or father had done for her.
Nice idea for a song, and a nice touch with the charity donation.
Wishing you luck!
Andy

Tom, Thank you for sharing this. All your ideas are just wonderful.
The unsigned letter/list could be at the hospital bus bench, or in the cafeteria/canteen, or the elevator, or...
if the blankets were knitted or crocheted, they might be unfinished.
each birthday note might repeat something she thought at the same age.
if her list was divided into verses?
My mother, spent her last days making sure the pile of family photos was divided into albums for each of us, with written labels on all the ones taken before we were old enough to remember. None of us will ever forget that love.

Thanks Andy and Pam for your posts.
I think the story will be that the letter is found in a box when clearing out the attic of an old house....maybe even a yard sale ? Questions what is precious and how carefully we look after it....
I'll keep you informed as I sketch it out but I like the idea of discovering the personalities and character of past generations. Regards, Tom.
