I am working on the melody and music for this song for those of us over forty.
Those Were the Good Old Days Doug Buche, 2012
1st Verse:
The house that I grew up in had a telephone on the wall.
Our black and white television set had a picture that was so small.
We had to take turns watching it, cause there was not enough room,
To all watch Howdy Doody, at the same time, or those Micky Mouse cartoons.
2nd Verse:
The air was conditioned by a propeller fan. That thing blew so hard.
You had to be careful when you were around it, not to put your fingers through the guard.
Dad's car had a stick shift on the column and buttons that were not marked.
No CD player, just an old radio. that played best when the car was parked.
Chorus:
Yep those were the good old days with the good old ways,
That made me what I am.
A country loving, down to earth, son of Uncle Sam.
3rd Verse:
Seemed like all my Uncles one by one, made it back from overseas.
From places in Europe or the South Pacific where they had gone to fight for peace.
But they didn't brag, didn't talk about it. At least not much out loud.
But we all knew it was serious, and that they served their country proud.
4th Verse:
I remember that mothers of that time hardly ever drank or ever smoked.
You'd see them wearing flowered aprons. Stirring something on the stove.
They were stay at home Moms, cause they had a lot of kids.
And staying home and taking care of them. That's what Mothers did.
Chorus:
Yep those were the good old days with the good old ways,
That made me what I am.
A country loving, down to earth, son of Uncle Sam.
Bridge:
If I could go back in time - -
I would look them all up and give them all a hug.
But time is like a tug boat and it's giving me a tug.
It's pulling me a direction, I'm not sure I want to go.
My engine is slowing down, and it's pulling real slow.
Time to stop talking about walking to school 12 miles through the snow.
Chorus and end:
But those were the good old days with the good old ways,
That made me what I am.
A country loving, down to earth, son of Uncle Sam.

Doug, To bad I remember so well. Verses sound fine to me, but the title/hook is uncomfortably familiar; maybe just "Oh, good old days, good old ways" KOS

That is true Pam. I have another song with about the same title.
Maybe "Good Old Ways?"

A country loving, down to earth, son of Uncle Sam. I am not quite getting the part about Uncle Sam and the verses, as they talk about good ole days, but that could be anywhere, almost...maybe just bring in something about the old ways that maybe made you who you are such as they taught you self suffience, or something, I am just not tying in the patriotic part and how it come to play. I love the verses, just feel the hook could be a bit more original...3rd Verse: Seemed like all my Uncles --you had uncles a line back and still not sure about the sudden part about soldiers, maybe tell us more about family man since you talk about mothers, tell us what fathers typically done...one by one, made it back from overseas. From places in Europe or the South Pacific where they had gone to fight for peace. But they didn't brag, didn't talk about it. At least not much out loud. But we all knew it was serious, and that they served their country proud. 4th Verse: I remember that mothers of that time hardly ever drank or ever smoked. You'd see them wearing flowered aprons. My engine is slowing down, and it's pulling GOING? real slow. Time to stop talking about walking to school 12 miles through the snow.-- I don't feel this line adds as much, it kinda came out of the blue for me..Chorus and end: But those were the good old days with the good old ways, That made me what I am. A country loving, down to earth, son of Uncle Sam. Best of luck with this one Doug.--Kimberly

Thanks Kim
Appreciate the feedback. The song is pretty heartfelt.
I put a very rough melody with a baby guitar on the mp3 site.
I had put it together before I saw your post though.
Twelve miles throught the snow is an old saying when older folks are talking about how hard their life was. You are probably "too young" for that right now.

Actually Kim. I will probably use some of your phrase changes in the revision of the song.
It'd be cool if you hear the way I put the melody to it though, so you can see/hear why I used the phrasing that I had so far.

Hi Doug, I have heard the expression before, I just felt it was not going with the other content on the bridge which was talking about your engine slowing down... I am glad you can use some of my suggestions:) Have a great day!!

"If someone is truly a jerk, or truly is not deserving of any positive reply from you, polite indifference is the best response you can give. Do not insult. Do not slam. Do not follow the urge to be nasty. Simply be politely indifferent." –Brian Austin Whitney
