Hey All, For anyone who hasn't seen this through musicdealers.com , it's time for any old fossils out there to get your gear out, and do a remake...... Music Dealers has an exciting new venture to bring to you! We are working closely with a major publisher to provide them with updated versions of some of their classic tracks. This is a very unique opportunity to record a cool, updated version of a classic tune, and have a major publisher add it to their repertoire and pitch your music! Music Dealers will also pitch the music, so your music will be working overtime, double time, and 8 days a week!
We are starting the program off with these two classic songs:
"Born To Be Wild" – Steppenwolf "Time Has Come Today" – The Chambers Brothers
*Please note: You cannot use any part of the original master recording, NO SAMPLING! This track needs to be modernized and made more contemporary. Think outside the box, this is an opportunity to have some fun and add a valuable asset to your arsenal!
Please contact your CARE Rep if you have any additional questions.
We are looking forward to hearing all of your submissions! It's time to rock! cheers, niteshift

Sorry. Wouldja run that by me one more time? It SOUNDS like those Publishers want to license the songs to new Artists. So who's payin' the bill?

Hey Ray,
I'm sorry, I don't follow....
The publisher holds the right to the copyright, right ?
They want new masters, which they can exploit in any number of ways.
If you you own the masters to the recording, you get the payday.
I don't get "Who's paying the bill ?". *shrugs*
cheers, niteshift

niteshift, As the post reads I can't see what musicdealers is getting out of it or anyone except maybe the Publisher who has a new track of an old song. Maybe someone can give better information. I don't get it.

Ah geez Ray, have you fallen asleep , you old geezer ? ( kidding ) The publisher, who controls the rights to the song, is allowing you to recoed it, and submit your recording, through Music Dealers. If it's any good, they'll flog it around town, perhaps re-release it, sell it for advertising, put it in corporate videos etc, or whatever, to flog the old dead horse, and extract as much money out of it as they can get. And they get the PRO royalties on top of it. As the owner of the recording, you get the lions share of the take, without first having to pay the mechanicals or do the paperwork or the legwork. Works for me. cheers, niteshift

They are just different versions of songs. Happens all the time. About 12 years ago there were a bunch of country artists that did versions of the Eagles songs. This sort of thing is done a good bit, they don't have to pay the higher rates for the original artists. There used to be an entire label, K Tell that sold lots of complilations of songs like this.
I actually did "Born to be Wild"and "Whiter Shade of Pale" in a bluegrass style, on a Brazillian destined CD about 10 years ago. Another way to get your abilities and name out there.

Hey Ray, Good wine yes, but New Zealand wine is even better ! Hey Marc, yep I remember those K-tel records. They did cheezy blanket advertising, and sold a bucket load of them. They even made the Top 10 album charts. Maybe the publishers are running out of ideas how to squueze the money from the old catalogues, and are rehashing old ideas. What goes around comes around......... cheers, niteshift

I just want to add to the thread drift by saying that there are actually some really good wines from here in Indiana, too. (I'm not just talking about the six gallon carboy of apple wine in my basement waiting to be bottled.)

Hey Kevin, I'll second your thread drift, by saying that as a songwriter, you gotta be at the bottom of the barrel with your "Cheap Wine and a Three Day Growth " as said by Australia's premiere rocker Jimmy Barnes and the boys from Cold Chisel in 1980.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cFKxbr4_-Vc&feature=relatedThen, 30 yrs later, the same lads performing the un-offocial Australian national anthem, "Khe San" a song written in the same time period for our Nam Vets...... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vfDI2ZjXwK8&feature=relatedA bit of a promo for Jimmy here, who has a new album comming out next week. Go the retro ! cheers, niteshift PS - for the lyricists, and anyone else who wishes to write through personal experience...... and for those who can't make out the vocal take..... Khe San - (c) Don Walker I left my heart to the sappers round Khe Sanh And my soul was sold with my cigarettes to the blackmarket man I've had the Vietnam cold turkey From the ocean to the Silver City And it's only other vets could understand About the long forgotten dockside guarantees How there were no V-dayheroes in 1973 How we sailed into Sydney Harbour Saw an old friend but couldn't kiss her She was lined, and I was home to the lucky land And she was like so many more from that time on Their lives were all so empty, till they found their chosen one And their legs were often open But their minds were always closed And their hearts were held in fast suburban chains And the legal pads were yellow, hours long, paypacket lean And the telex writers clattered where the gunships once had been But the car parks made me jumpy And I never stopped the dreams Or the growing need for speed and novacaine So I worked across the country end to end Tried to find a place to settle down, where my mixed up life could mend Held a job on an oil-rig Flying choppers when I could But the nightlife nearly drove me round the bend And I've travelled round the world from year to year And each one found me aimless, one more year the more for wear And I've been back to South East Asia But the answer sure ain't there But I'm drifting north, to check things out again You know the last plane out of Sydney's almost gone Only seven flying hours, and I'll be landing in Hong Kong There ain't nothing like the kisses From a jaded Chinese princess I'm gonna hit some Hong Kong mattress all night long Well the last plane out of Sydney's almost gone Yeah the last plane out of Sydney's almost gone And it's really got me worried I'm goin' nowhere and I'm in a hurry And the last plane out of Sydney's almost gone

My account at MusicDealers got closed because I didn't submitted anything.
I like these covers requests, though. It's fun to fiddle around with.. when is the deadline?

Hey Magne,
I don't know the deadline mate, but it looks like it's going to be an ongoing programme. really good for those folks that like doing covers, and by the way are damn good at them.
Just another outlet for creativity, as I see it, and if you're being creative doing covers, and you're damn good at it ( they're looking for finished broadcast quality here ) then go for it.
cheers, nitshift

Covers are kind of easy, as you don't have to write the song. Everything is there, so you can give it all to performance..
'Good' is subjective, but in the market for production music, 'right' means good.

I make a living performing covers so this is right up my boulevard......
Hey Magne....writing songs is the easy part.....it is the performance that sells a song. When performing covers you have to be at least as good as the people who performed it on the original record which was recorded in the best studios and used the best session musicians.....everyone knows the benchmark and standard required for a cover...... BUT when performing original material who knows what the benchmark?..... if you make a mistake nobody will pick up on it....LOL
WINE?..........Scotland makes the best whisky.....wine is ONLY for girls.
