Thanks to all who contributed to the successful "Nowhere Man" and "Champion" challenges.

This next challenge is a chance for lyricists to post lyrics and have original music put to them.

Usual rules apply...only post lyrics if you are happy with anyone using your lyric any which way.
Cowritten lyrics...please ensure you have all the necessary permissions.
Only post your own original lyrics.

Once lyrics have been posted entrants can choose which lyric to set music to.

Please do not all choose the same set of lyrics..... once a set of lyrics has been chosen by someoene try picking different lyrics to cover. So first come first served but try and let everyone participate.

Once you have completed your song please post it on Soundclick. I will open a thread for links to completed songs later on in the month..Best of luck but have fun.

I have a few questions.

Will you be posting a deadline so we know when all the lyrisists that want to participate have done so?

Is it OK for 2 people to pick the same lyrics? I know we want to spread it out, but how will we know ahead of time how many lyrics and how many musicators there will be?

Is this only for lyrisists, or can someone that can write music but just hasn't also submit lyrics?

That's just off the top of my head. What do you think?

Musicator. Why does that always sound kinda dirty to me?

Ey, I don't 'ate music!

I'm going to let Big Jim set the rules, because I'm too much of an Anything Goes kinda guy...

Hi Ricki. There will be a cut off but that will depend very much on how many entries there are. I would suggest that once a song has been selected then you should go for an alternative till all the lyrics have been chosen. If two go for same lyrics there is no real prob but bear in mind this is a chance for folk who may never get music composed for their lyrics so we should try to cover every lyric if possible. Any lyric can be entered but people who do not write music should say so on their entry and be given preference. It would be an idea for us all to indicate ASAP what song we are choosing to let others avoid choosing same song.

Should somebody post in the lyric 3 forum and maybe the other two, stating that the new "challenge" has started, what it is, how to enter, etc.?

I presume lyricists enter one lyric, right here, in this very thread?

Big Jim,

I took Mark's "Yep" to mean it was "okay" to post in a couple lyric forums that there's a new "Challenge" that lyricists might be interested in. I simply copied your post, and added a small "lead in"...we'll see if the "action" picks up grin

One of my lyrics I've kind of wanted to hear since I wrote it...

TAKEN

Going Coastal
© 2009 Greg Swartzentruber

Yep it’s still comin’ down
Damn near buried in this cold cold town
Three solid weeks of snow and ice
Had about enough of this winter life

Pressure’s rising, humidity too
Can’t you feel what I’m about to do?

I’m going coastal
Gonna catch the next flight
Put my toes in the sand
On a beach of pure white
Gonna get all brown in the tropical sun
It’s time I had myself some Caribbean fun
Gonna march to the beat of a lone steel drum
I’m going coastal

The snow sure looks pretty
First day it falls in the big big city
But when it all fades to an ugly gray
You know it’s time to get away

Pressure’s rising, humidity too
Can’t you guess what I’m about to do?

I’m going coastal
Gonna catch the next flight
Put my toes in the sand
On a beach of pure white
Gonna get all brown in the tropical sun
It’s time I had myself some Caribbean fun
Gonna march to the beat of a lone steel drum
I’m going coastal

Seems every year about this time
I need a tall Corona with a twist of lime

Pressure’s rising, humidity too
Damn sure know what I’m about to do?

I’m going coastal
Gonna catch the next flight
Put my toes in the sand
On a beach of pure white
Gonna get all brown in the tropical sun
It’s time I had myself some Caribbean fun
Gonna march to the beat of a lone steel drum
I’m going coastal

Right. I'm going to post one of the lyrics that has had a bit more trouble finding a home.

TAKEN

Bottle of Jezebel

It was just another night in the club
Some company was all I was looking for
Not interested in thoughts of love
Just a warm body to take out that door

But when she danced over seductively
I should have listened to those danger bells
With a flip of her hair, she entranced me
That sweet succubus scent of Chanel

She gestured to the bartender, a bottle slid my way
Then whispered in my ear, 'I know how to make your day'

Oh, the name on the label shoulda given me a clue
But she'd lowered my defenses, and pretty soon
She was promising me a lifetime, and I didn't mind
Oh why didn't I listen to those danger bells
She was setting me on a path to hell
When I downed that bottle of Jezebel
As I downed that bottle of Jezebel

Oh how could such a splendid night
Be followed by such a torturous dawn?
Woke up and found she had taken flight
Looked like a whirlwind had hit my home

Every drawer torn open, an empty wallet
And a slowly fading sense of bliss.
An edge of white sticking out my coat pocket
A note, sealed with her coquette kiss.

I dunno what made her different from the other girls
But she flipped the table round, for one night she rocked my world

Oh, the name on the label shoulda given me a clue
But she'd lowered my defenses, and pretty soon
She was promising me a lifetime, and I didn't mind
Oh why didn't I listen to those danger bells
She was setting me on a path to hell
When I downed that bottle of Jezebel
As I downed that bottle of Jezebel

All so pathetic, I don't even know her name
But I still wonder, if I ever saw her face again
Would she open the door away from this hell?
Or just uncork another bottle of Jezebel?

Oh, the name on the label shoulda given me a clue
But she'd lowered my defenses, and pretty soon
She was promising me a lifetime, and I didn't mind
Oh why didn't I listen to those danger bells
She was setting me on a path to hell
When I downed that bottle of Jezebel
As I downed that bottle of Jezebel[color:#FF0000][/color]

Catwalk Candy
© words by C. Stewart ( April 30th, 2007 )

Soft leathers
Pink feathers
Catwalk Candy

Open blouse
Crowded house
Catwalk Candy

Chorus.....
A sweet piece of sugar
But she's only there to view
Don't expect me to share
My, Candy with you
Catwalk Candy, lookin' fine
Catwalk Candy, she's all mine

Rockin' hips
Puffy lips
Catwalk Candy

You would melt
If you felt
Catwalk Candy

Chorus.....
A sweet piece of sugar
But she's only there to view
Don't expect me to share
My, Candy with you
Catwalk Candy, lookin' fine
Catwalk Candy, she's all mine

Instrumental Break....

Bridge....
Most men would love her
Half the women too
Tell me Mr. Preacher man
How bout' you .
I bet you'd like a taste of my Candy

Chorus.....
A sweet piece of sugar
But she's only there to view
Don't expect me to share
My, Candy with you
Catwalk Candy, lookin' fine
Catwalk Candy, she's all mine

Chorus.....
A sweet piece of sugar
But she's only there to view
Don't expect me to share
My, Candy with you
Catwalk Candy, lookin' fine
Catwalk Candy, she's all mine

Thanks guys, this is great. There's some incredible people on this site, taking their time to help us learners. I write lyrics only, sing my own songs to a melody in my head. I don't write msic.

Tonight In Our Dreams

Verse 1
You've seen so much country, from the cab of an 18-wheeler,
Traveled the states and Canada, without quality time,
Livin' life on schedule, drive sun up 'till sundown,
No time to appreciate the sights, you're back behind the wheel.

Verse 2
I've been a few places, some I don't remember,
Our childhood vacation time, back when I was young,
Ridin' in a Chevy II, in the backseat playin',
Out to visit family, then back to Oregon.

Chorus 1
Maybe there will come a day, gonna see the world together,
So many places to travel to, the sights we wannna see,
But for now we work our days,to pay for all those toys and things
The ones we'll play on tonight in our dreams.

Verse 3 We'll take the jet, boat and ride the rapids,
Snake river dream, tonight you'll happen,
Rough ridin' river, you're a sight to see,
Wake up in the mornin' back to pay for all of our dreams.

Verse 4
Ride the Pi'ute Trails, on our ATV's,
Wilderness campin', where we want to be,
We'll ride from Utah, on up into Canada,
Wake up in the mornin' back to pay for all of our dreams.

Chorus 2
Someday when we're older, might just see these things together,
Places we wanna travel to, the things we wanna do,
We'll keep workin our days away, to pay for all these things,
So one day tonights dreams just might come true.

Bridge
Tonight we'll take, the jetboat out on the Snake,
What a sight you'll be, what a dream to see,
Might share a tale, a night on the Wilderness Trails,
Ride from Utah up into Canada is what suits me.

well --- I think this could be country ??-- but I have not made it to that phase yet !!

Half Hearted © joice marie 2007

The ferris wheel is spinning
I see you staring at the ground
Too tired 'n sad 'bout what you're thinking
A barkers voice drowns your thoughts out

You glance at ....
Half hearted me
I see ......
Half hearted you
Half hearted,.... seems
The best we can do

Colored lights tint the night scape
Whistle pops and carnival sounds
Muffling how my heart's breaking
Seems smiles are just for clowns

You glance at....
Half hearted me
I see ....
Half hearted you
Half hearted,..... seems
The best we can do

How to say love's lost its luster
Time changes everything
With all compassion we can muster
Let's slip off our golden rings

You glance at...
Half hearted me
I see...
Half hearted you
Half hearted, ....... seems
The best we can do

Even the circus clowns know
Half hearted is
The best we can do

Hey Herbie:

I think this time the musicators are free to choose any of the posted lyrics that they wish - in fact, the goal, I believe, is that no two people do the same one. I think Big Jim was just carving out one for himself.

TAKEN

"A Million Tears Ago"
© Lyrics 2008 Beth Williams

The future ended yesterday
Saw the clues, but looked away
Fingers tremble on my cup of Joe
Memories might sneak up on me
Trip me up, and back I’ll be
In that dream, a million tears ago

Such a crying shame
I'm drowning in pain
Just barely afloat
Since you blew out the flame
No spark to relight it
No flicker of hope
Left from a Million Tears Ago

It’s noon but dark above my head
Can’t I please go back to bed
Wish I could just sleep this off, but no
Don’t see me escaping this
Can I fix things with a kiss
Like I did a million tears ago

When making love was sweet and slow
And promise fanned the afterglow

Such a crying shame
I'm drowning in pain
Just barely afloat
Since you blew out the flame
No spark to relight it
No flicker of hope
Left from a Million Tears Ago

But then the end came all too soon
Left hanging like a spent balloon
No parachute to break my fall below
But that’s the price, out on a limb
I’d go again, to be with him
Forever, like a million tears ago

I just picked the first one in for that reason......if anybody else wants to cover it feel free.... the object is to try and give each lyric music. I did say first come first served. LOL

OHHHHhhhh.... I get it, I thought we were gonna vote and ALL do it, like the other challenges ! ! k...but I don't think it will be as interesting...it was cool to see what everyone did with the same song, this is more hodge-podge...I dunno

Alright.....I'll post this one, but only because I really want to hear it recorded.
Now, listen to me here, this one is a screamer, but not in the sense that it should be screamed out over the amps, but screamed from deep within, in other words, to put across the emotion and the frustration by expressing said discord with the instruments, as opposed to simply relying on the vocals......Think of a surging lava flow....and not Def Leppard!

VISIONS (PEACE TO HYSTERIA)

Another tour, another burning stage
Hear those haunting screams
For a couple of hours we feel the rage
Living out your dreams

Traveling down that long open road
Wake up in some hotel
Around 8 or 9 we’re set to explode
‘Cause we got records to sell

Visions Within----- Peace to Hysteria
Listen to those guitars
Madness Again---- Peace to Hysteria
Your proxy superstar

We worked hard to headline our shows
Playin’ all those small towns
Got a record out, and now life just flows
The money man likes our sound

There’s one thing I never say out loud
The time and place ain’t right
Guess it looks like fun playin’ to the crowd
But I sure am lonely at night

Visions Within----- Peace to Hysteria
Please pick up the phone
Madness Again--- Peace to Hysteria
Ridin’ that big bus alone

(spoken bridge)
Yeah, I lived my dream, I played my song
Rode a horse to the mountain king
Lookin’ back, I’ve been gone too long
And now I can’t change anything

Visions Within---- Peace to Hysteria
Life is nothing if lived in vain
Madness Again--- Peace to Hysteria
Until only my ghost remains

Herbie it is all part of the learning curve. It is a chance to cowrite with someone you might never normally work with and a chance for folk to get their words put to music who under normal circumstances might never get the chance. Hopefully these type of challenges will be a regular feature and we will change the format to suit the mood of the contributors. A any input about future challenges will be welcomed and taken on board. I will always go by what the majority want. Next challenge will be different for example we might reverse it..... get people to compose music...post it and then we write lyrics for the tune we like. Or we could do something completely different. All ideas will be discussed and the majority of opinions carry.

Herbie, this one may not be as entertaining for the end listener as the Champion thread, but there is a whole different point to this one. Instead of one person getting ten versions, this time a whole lot of lyricists will suddenly get music for their songs. To me, this challenge brings more music to more people. We'll try all sorts of things as time goes on.

Hey, I missed your "Champion" version somehow...just heard it and thought it was great!

Well, I fully intended to pick a lyric from someone I've never worked with before...but I've learned that when a lyric just jumps out and starts playing in my head, then it's Go Time. So I'm gonna have to grab a hold of Catwalk Candy and see where she takes me. smile

Hi Jim,

Glad I looked at this. I thought it had something to do with "Nowhere Man" but just in a new slant. I was wondering Jim if you could change the title of the thread so it makes it clear this is indeed a brand new challenge and doesn't keep away people who would like to participate. I took from the title that it was part of the previous challenge. Just a thought. smile

Here's one for the gipper....each Chorus is alittle lyrically progressive (fun video potential) smile

“He’s A Football Fanatic” (Fun/Female Uptempo/Attitude)
(c)2009 Lynn Orloff

When we married at the altar,
I thought I knew him really well,
Watchin' football was his hobby,
It was very plain to tell.

But I guess I never realized,
Just how deep this passion went,
I’m your classic football widow,
Please excuse me while I vent…

Chorus
He’s a football fanatic, a hundred posters line our walls,
He’s got tons of memorabilia, now our house looks like some mall,
He’s always yellin' at the TV, dropping pizza on the floor,
He’s a football fanatic, and I can’t take it anymore.

Has his buddies come each weekend,
Seems they stay till half past two,
Not before the fridge is empty,
Or cigar smoke fills the room.

Tells me honey just be patient,
I know I gotta fix that leak,
And I’ll get the car to start again,
It’s only been a couple weeks.

He’s a football fanatic, a hundred posters line our walls,
He talks football in his sleep so much that I can't sleep at all,
He’s always yellin' at the TV, spilling peanuts on the floor,
He’s a football fanatic, and I can’t take it anymore.

Bridge
When the football season's over and he’s lookin for a kiss,
He won’t find me on the sidelines cause I’ve had enough of this…

Yeah he’s a football fanatic, a hundred posters line our walls,
He’s got tons of memorabilia, now our house looks like some mall, (and I feel the tension building everytime it's nearly Fall)
He’s always yellin' at the big screen, dropping hot wings on the floor,
If he doesn't stop this madness, then he'll hold the losin' score.

Taken

Now is Forever
©2008 Kristi McKeever

I know this feeling well
It’s loyal like a friend
I’ve gone and done it now
Found love by accident

Pure luck is in my corner
Cuz the world is a big place
How do kindred spirits meet
And share life with an embrace

(lift)
We hold hands with time because

(ch)
Now is forever
When I’m with you
Moments don’t matter
Just these feelings do
Your tender gaze
Falls soft on my face
Now is forever
When love celebrates

Perhaps we needed to wait
See all of life’s true colors
Learn what best friends look like so
We would recognize each other

(lift)
We’ll share the best of times because

(ch)
Now is forever
When I’m with you
Moments don’t matter
Just these feelings do
Your tender gaze
Falls soft on my face
Now is forever
When love celebrates

(br)
And if we fall behind and
Let the magic lose its place
Tempt me with your deep desires
And the passion will light our flame

(lift)
We have no sense of time because

(ch)
Now is forever
When I’m with you
Moments don’t matter
Just these feelings do
Your tender gaze
Falls soft on my face
Now is forever
When love celebrates

Now is forever
When love celebrates

I was thinking the same same thing, I tend to gloss over anything with 'nowehere man' on it, thinking it's old news. I've only just noticed this. I suspect many will not realise it's a new exercise/challenge.

Also it would be useful that if when a song is taken it is noted at the top of that song's post, rather than having to sift through and check the responses. And another thing smile - If you are taking a lyric embolden it in your post so it easy to pick out.. please smile

I added a Big Red 'Taken' to the top of my lyric post. Hope that helps some.... And let me just say that I'm honored to have Big Jim try to make some musical sense of my scribbles.

Okay peoples here's one without too many words for a female vocal and likely not "market" age. Smokey blues?

"Loud and Clear Tonight"
©jhoffman07

dancing with you
after dinner
took me back in time
I remember
when you always
had that look in your eye

don't think you have to
say you love me
I can read your mind
I can read you
loud and clear tonight

close the curtains
have a good look
baby come get me
take me captive
hold me hostage
and when you set me free

don't think you have to
say you love me
when I close my eyes
I can read you
loud and clear tonight

don't think you have to
say you love me
when I close my eyes
I can read you
loud and clear tonight

Michael. Please consider me flattered that you'd choose my lyric. That is, of course, if I understood the post properly. *laughs* I'm glad this one will finally find a home.

I would change the title of this challenge thread as requested if I knew how. Maybe Mark knows, and can do it. I suggest calling this Cover challenge No3. If each new challenge has a number then it will be less confusing and easier to follow. I like "Nowhere Man" as an affectionate pet name for these challenges and would like to keep it in some way as it was the first challenge and sparked this whole thing off.

Road Hog Gypsies

v1
Said goodbye to Calhoun County running for the Northeast coast
Chis'ling like a Texas twister through the long and winding road
Ridin' high and feelin' mighty in my bright-red, long nose Pete
Pushin' eighty in a sixty with nine tons of Angus beef

v2
Got my scanner set for Smokies, chugging coffee black and hot
There's no state I ain't left rubber or a Philip-Morris butt
All across this two way ribbon with an ever changing load
I know ev'ry dime store diner on the pike or dusty roads

C.
They call us road hog Gypsies
Through night and day we roll
Dirty road hog Gypsies
Takin' big rigs for a stroll
Cuss-ed road hog Gypsies
Best to stay out of our way
Busted road hog Gypsies
We s'posed to been there yesterday

v3
Have an itch to keep on moving, never seem to get enough
There's no beer I ain't poured down and no hill I ain't been up
When the price of gas skyrockets and the bills become too much
Pitch your bitch at King Abdullah, don't be lookin' down at us

v4
It's all clear through Sooey country so I put the hammer down
And I think about the people sleeping in these little towns
As I listen to some Johnny, there's one lady on my mind
Said she wouldn't try to tame me cause I'd never walk the line

C.
They call us road hog Gypsies
Through night and day we roll
Dirty road hog Gypsies
Takin' big rigs for a stroll
Cuss-ed road hog Gypsies
Best to stay out of our way
Busted road hog Gypsies
We s'posed to been there yesterday

Hey Wendy! Ole Sleepyhead here is just stumbling upon this news...and jeepers, what a great way to start my day! grin

Hence, I must concur with you -- This IS so exciting (though you noted it's a Million TEARS ago, not YEARS, right? eek blush ...)!!!

I'm very much looking forward to hearing it what you come up with. You know I'm a fan -- especially of your VOICE -- and I'm quite honored you thought my lyric worth musicating.

Thank you again, and have a great day!
Beth

Hi guys,
One of the "not too many" songs I write that I feel as uptempo. Never mind the dots in the C--that's just the way I was hearing it.
Prob'ly KK's fault anyway <G>
Wy

Fire Breathin' Female c Wyman Griffith

She's got it and she flaunts it
She knows everybody wants it
She don't need to turn it up
It's as high as it can go
She's got a head of steam
'Bout ready to explode

C
She's a fi...re breathin' female
You can fee...l the heat across the room
She comes in wearin' next to nothin'
And nothin's too good to be true
For what you're thinkin'
You could go to jail
She's a fi...re
Breathin' female

Hot hugs and hotter kisses
All on the mark no misses
If you're target for tonight
You're just as good as gone
She's a mistress of the art
She knows how to turn you on

C
She's a fi...re breathin' female
You can fee...l the heat across the room
She comes in wearin' next to nothin'
And nothin's too good to be true
For what you're thinkin'
You could go to jail
She's a fi...re
Breathin' female

B
Her kisses are nutritious
They make you feel ambitious
Blood pressure through the roof
Ten feet tall and bullet proof

No intention of stayin.
Cuts a swath across the nation
Tracked by a trail of broken hearts
Town by town and state by state
You wake up in the morning
But by then it's too late

She's a fi...re breathin' female
You can fee...l the heat across the room
She co...mes in wearin' next to nothin'
And nothin's too good to be true
For what you're thinkin'
You could go to jail
She's a fi...re
Breathin' female

Hey guys it might be a good idea to pm your partner and make suggestions etc build up a relationship bounce ideas, get feedback from each other and work together. Communications is at the heart of every good cowrite partnership. Glad to see some of you are talking to each other about the song already.
