Jerry, you could substitute either party and it would be just as accurate.

It is a great line--and Bob Hope is one of the few people who could've gotten away with it at the time.

Not political, but from the movie about the tough man competitions: the female lead asks the male where he is form and he responds "I'm from Montana Ma'am, where the men are men and the sheep are nervous". Hmmmmmmmmm.

While I really like Mikes opening movie quote by Bob Hope, this is my absolute all time favorite. And it's what I say to myself every time I hear Obama Speak or see what he is doing to my country.

Joyboy, The one fact which you forgot to mention about New Jersey, which ain't my home state thank God; is because of the way the tolls are set up here you can get into New Jersey for free but you have to pay to get out. LOL!!!
I forget the movie, but the actor was James Garner responding to Sally Field's queation of what he does for fun in this little town; "I have a woman whose house I go to for supper, and breakfast."

Some of my favorite movie lines were said by the butler in the movie "Arthur."
In his sophisticated British accent and stone face, he said things like:
Arthur, "Hobson, I'd like to take a bath."
Hobson, "I'll alert the media," and "I suppose you want me to wash your di_k for you too, you little sh_t!"
Also, he said this to girls with Arthur, "One would have to go to a bowling alley to meet a woman of your calibre," and "I await your next syllable with great eagerness!"
I loved him in that film!

Here Here Heidi,
I know almost every line from that film and repeat them with great elacularity!
"My Dr. Has instructed me to drink ten of these an hour."
"You're a hooker! I just thought I was doing great with you!"
"A real woman could stop you from drinking Arthur." "It'd have to be a REALLY BIG WOMAN!"
"If you and your undershirt would take one step backwards, I could enter this dwelling."
"Steal something casual."
"Princess Gloria is from a country so small, they recently had the whole country carpeted."
"Do you think he wants some cheese?"
"Where's the other half of this moose?"
"Can I bring you something sir?" "Do you have today's Pravda? I like to keep up with Russia."
"I killed a man in my kitchen." "Well, you probably ate out that night."

Yes, Marc. I can see you are also a huge fan. I don't think I've ever seen a comedy with such a great match of script with those two characters of Arthur and Hobson. Liza seemed a bit out of place to me in her role, but she is very talented just the same.

I wasn't as big a fan of "Arthur," although the chemistry was great betwen Gielgud and Dudley Moore.
The line that cracked me up the most for some reason was when Arthur's grandmother was laying down the law about carrying on the family status -- very serious and a little spooky.
Then she sees a servant brings in a dish of peanuts and exclaims "Peanuts!" like a little girl. The way she said it just cracked me up.
Or Arthur trying to convince himself to marry the woman his father wants him to.
Have you ever seen her face when when the light catches it just right? She's really quite beautiful.... Of course you can't depend on that light

Joyboy, I also loved the "peanuts" word. The way she said it came out of nowhere and I said it just the other day in the same way.
The writing of that screenplay was sheer genius as far as I'm concerned.
Take care.

"What we have here is Failure to Communicate"...(Strother Martin to Paul Newman, in "Cool Hand Luke") I've always enjoyed the Irony in that line..& how it STILL applies to so much that's Ongoing today.

Lines from Troy 2004...
Odysseus: Men are haunted by the vastness of eternity. And so we ask ourselves: will our actions echo across the centuries? Will strangers hear our names long after we are gone, and wonder who we were, how bravely we fought, how fiercely we loved?
Briseis: Why did you choose this life? Achilles: What life? Briseis: To be a great warrior. Achilles: I chose nothing. I was born and this is what I am.

From Troy 2004...
Achilles: I'll tell you a secret. Something they don't teach you in your temple. The Gods envy us. They envy us because we're mortal, because any moment might be our last. Everything is more beautiful because we're doomed. You will never be lovelier than you are now. We will never be here again.
Odysseus: If they ever tell my story let them say that I walked with giants. Men rise and fall like the winter wheat, but these names will never die. Let them say I lived in the time of Hector, tamer of horses. Let them say I lived in the time of Achilles.

Being There...Chance on Tv being interviewed
President "Bobby": Mr. Gardner, do you agree with Ben, or do you think that we can stimulate growth through temporary incentives?
Chance: As long as the roots are not severed, all is well. And all will be well in the garden.
President "Bobby": In the garden.
Chance: Yes. In the garden, growth has it seasons. First comes spring and summer, but then we have fall and winter. And then we get spring and summer again.
President "Bobby": Spring and summer.
Chance: Yes.
President "Bobby": Then fall and winter.
Chance: Yes.
Benjamin Rand: I think what our insightful young friend is saying is that we welcome the inevitable seasons of nature, but we're upset by the seasons of our economy.
Chance: Yes! There will be growth in the spring!
Benjamin Rand: Hmm!
Chance: Hmm!
President "Bobby": Hm. Well, Mr. Gardner, I must admit that is one of the most refreshing and optimistic statements I've heard in a very, very long time. … I admire your good, solid sense. That's precisely what we lack on Capitol Hill.
[With other poor black seniors, watching Chance on TV]
Louise: It's for sure a white man's world in America. Look here: I raised that boy since he was the size of a piss-ant. And I'll say right now, he never learned to read and write. No, sir. Had no brains at all. Was stuffed with rice pudding between th' ears. Shortchanged by the Lord, and dumb as a jackass. Look at him now! Yes, sir, all you've gotta be is white in America, to get whatever you want. Gobbledy-gook!

Hey John,
I was telling someone they need to watch Being There just a couple of days ago. Then you post this. One of my favorite films. And then Sellers died not long after the release.

Yeah Stvie, this was one of his best roles IMO. Dr Strangelove was twisted and wonderfully but very overtly satirical, while the Pink Panther movies were simply funny. I really liked Sellers because of his multiple roles in movies. I cannot claim to have seen all of his work, but Undercovers Hero, in which he plays a whole bunch of characters, and The Mouse That Roared come to mind....apart from Dr Strangelove....come to mind The section I quoted is most memorable to me I guess because of the setup and circumstance surrounding the scene. I think I try to watch it again soon
