Hey Kids,

Having seen and enjoyed JM's artwork recently, I felt like doing a little bragging on someone ELSE'S behalf for a change (I KNOW, someone should probably mark this date down in history! grin ).

Anyhoo, both my parents are artists (in fact they met in art school....my mom was my dad's teacher :o !). Needless to say, we had a very unique and interesting childhood. Nothing one would consider "Bohemian"...just that we got to experience a lot of culture (and "characters") at an early age. Plus, we learned the pros and cons of cultivating and pursuing our creative instincts.

I'd be curious, in fact, to hear about the "artistic backgrounds" of the JPF members. The creative blood comes from somewhere...Maybe I'll start a thread on General about that...

Anyway, as an adult, I appreciate them and their talent all the more; not only because I feel they've helped me develop a "trained eye", but also because they're basically "working artists" as well. However, they do have paintings all over the place (in the homes of many celebrities, The Pentagon, the Air & Space Museum, etc.). In fact, my dad is considered an acting colonel in the Air Force, and at one time was the official artist for NASA, documenting all the Space Shuttle Lift-offs. My mom now teaches privately, with the lower level of our home converted into a large studio.

And best of all, I am lucky enough to have a rotating gallery of free and gorgeous artwork in my home!

So, thought you might be interested in seeing some of their work. They are in a number of galleries around the country, but the Shaw Gallery in Naples Florida is where they have the bulk of their work. Following are links to their individual artist pages.

I hope you enjoy them as much as I do. smile

You are so funny. In truth, as I was revisiting some of their work, I did have a chuckle at that myself. Who'd a thunk it? grin

Hi Tricia,

So glad you could check out their work. Not too shabby, huh? I'm so proud of them.

I suppose it would be the polite/coy thing to say that I can't even draw a straight line with a ruler, but in truth, I do have a bit of a flair for drawing. I'll try to take some pictures of some of my pieces, see if they'll transpose okay.

As for my parents's work, I just hope Hurricane Ike peters out before it hits land on the gulf coast. Though that's certainly a "who cares?" matter, when it comes to people getting displaced and/or hurt, I'd hate to see all of that work destroyed....

Thanks again, and have a good afternoon,
Beth

Hi Jean,

Thank you for taking the time to take a quick spin down to Naples, Florida! As you've likely seen, they do have their specific specialties....As a rule, Mom does horses (in their various racing categories), Victorian scenes, collages, and commissioned portraits....all in generally muted tones. Dad leans more towards aviation art and seascapes/landscapes (Europe primarily)....he uses a combo of ink and watercolor, and acrylics. With the latter, he's pretty heavy-handed with the palette knife -- the paint is fairly thick and raised in certain areas.

Sorry to go on and on....Nice to do it about someone besides me for a change...

Ciao for now,
Beth

Hey Jean,

Sorry I missed your second post -- but yeah, I won't pretend their inexpensive.... :o

But, they're an INVESTMENT, and all that. smile

And just think, you can go to the web site now at your leisure, and peek at any painting you like!!

Thanks again, especially in light of your exhaustive explanation of your creative background over on General.

Have a good evening,
Beth

Hey there Calvin,

Thanks for taking the time to come back to check their work out.

They're pretty dang good, huh?

And "better than you"? You'll have to show me something for me to examine with my "trained eye", and I'll make that assessment!

Later,
Beth

These are great, Beth - Thanks for posting them...

I really resonated to your Dad's paintings of Venice - I was there for a day once and he captured many of the scenes that are in my mind's eye.

Love the Victorian pieces of your Mom's too - they capture such a wistful mood....

Would love to see the Space Shuttle stuff - are any of them up on the web?

What a cool background you have!

Hi Ralph,

Thank you! I don't know if famous is the right word, but they're certainly well-respected in the artistic community. I wish I had one of their brochures handy...the list of places where they've exhibited, and the private collections they are a part of is fairly impressive.

Do I paint? Never really did. Drawing was my thing, ceramics (clay), and of course writing.

As for the price of my parents paintings? I hate to say "a lot", but that's a pretty good answer. They do have more affordable works, though....in the form of limited edition giclee prints. This refers to a very sophisticated ink jet printing process, where you get essentially a replica of one of their larger pieces.

Anyway, thank you so much for stopping by.

And if by chance your interest in cost is more than curiosity, by all means, let me know and I can put you in touch with my folks. I think my day to get to speak with them is Wednesdays -- JUST KIDDING!!!

Ciao for now,
Beth

Hi again Scott,

I'm so glad you enjoyed their work. And no doubt, we had a fun childhood because of it. Naturally, they both worked out of the house, where there studios were, so we were considered "way cool and lucky", b/c everyone else's dad was a 9-to-5-er.

As for the Space Shuttle pieces, those are currently housed at either NASA or the Air and Space Museum in D.C. Not sure where there are copies for you to see....

Not surprisingly, we spent a lot of time in Washington (even though we're from Boston). My parents are both members of the Society of Illustrators, and every 18 months, this National group would present a bulk of aviation art to the USAF (I'm not sure how/why that started). SO, growing up, we'd truck on down to D.C. for a week, live in officers' housing at the AFB overlooking the Potomac, then go to this black tie event, and hobnob with the various military and other Important Folks in attendance. We always sat with these two generals, and I didn't think much of it, being a kid, but one year I couldn't go, and my parents relayed how sorry General so-and-so and his wife were that I couldn't make it!

Ah, YOUTH....wasted on the young, and all that! Remind me sometime to tell you about my limo ride with this very nice congressman.... cool

Ciao for now, Scott!

Hi Beth

Always thought that you must have a very colorful background ! Wow - you family is quite impressive ! - now these are not the same folks that you had mentioned.... - no it was about the inLaws, I think... never mind.

very beautiful work from both _ I enjoyed

I'll look forward to seeing yours too sometime.

I know you have a threads also regarding family background somewhere... I'm one of the odd balls - may just be the milk man's daughter - 'cause there does not seem to be any artist - anywhere in my lineage.... My mom did like to sing a bit though.

Thanks for sharing. smile jm

Hi again, JM...

OKAY, now I can officially answer you over here.... smile

Thank you for the kudos on my parents' work...obviously, as a fellow painter you can appreciate them all the more...and necessarily, I appreciate your comments.

I'm quite surprised about the lack of artistry in your family....While you might have supposed a "colorful background" for me (love the double entendre there!), I would have gathered you were from a veritable garden of creative types!!! Still, if your mom sang at ALL, that shows the talent was there.

I rest my case. grin

Thanks again, and have a great afternoon....

Hi Beth,

Wow! The closest I thing I have to compare with your family is... no, I got nothin'! No artists in my family at all, of any flavor! Very talented pair, your parents. So cool that they had such gifts to share with each other. Are they still painting? Can't wait to see your own art. Thanks for sharing.

Hey Kaley,

You're so sweet -- and those horses are pretty good, huh? She tends to do more of the realistic approach, vs. dad's abstract technique.

And no, that wasn't my Samantha in the picture...they just like to include their names when at all possible smile !

So thanks again for your generous visit...

Cheers,
Beth

Hey Ricki,

I think I might've answered part of your question in my post to Kaley...whoops!

But thanks anyway for taking the time to come over and look at their work. Most of my stuff is still at my parents' house....but I should really go and get some of it for here!

I appreciate all your kind words, Ricki. Glad you could make it!

Cheers,
Beth

"If someone is truly a jerk, or truly is not deserving of any positive reply from you, polite indifference is the best response you can give. Do not insult. Do not slam. Do not follow the urge to be nasty. Simply be politely indifferent." –Brian Austin Whitney
