Gibson have just introduced a self tuning Robot Guitar. This limited edition (no price anounced yet) will be on sale at a few selected dealers approx 400 worldwide. Who will buy one? Your thoughts please. http://www.gibson.com/robotguitar/

A zillionaire guitar player might buy one but I am sure it is going to be way of most peoples price range. Some studio players and the pro's that can afford one will probably buy them. Great concept but I will wait for the pro's to test them out. I don't play in alternative tunings, for now,but I bet I still couldn't afford one.

MSN has a writeup about this and they list the price: Gibson will launch 4,000 limited edition, blue silverburst Les Gibson Robot Guitars around the world on December 7 at a price in the region of $2,500. It expects to roll out a standard robot edition starting in January 2008. Not outrageous at all compared to the price of other Les Pauls. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21791941/

A lot of potential with this concept, but I wouldn't advise being the first to buy unless you're wealthy. Over time, the technology will improve and the price will decline.
Imagine a few scenarios:
You're a player who bends notes all the time...does it immediately compensate and throw you OUT of tune for the next few notes?
A fun one: while playing, you turn a tuner wayyy down and watch it magically climb back up while you play! Now that's showmanship.
If a string breaks, does it just keep tuning and tuning and tuning...?
Still, this is a $900 gizmo. Handy indeed when you want to switch quickly between alternate tunings on the same guitar, or not waste time with your chromatic tuning box or pedal. But I can't see paying that price.

Lyle I believe that the automatic tuner functions only operate when the knob is pulled out and the tuning function is selected, set and locked in. This function stops when the knob is reset and pushed back down.

Makes sense. I guess you wouldn't want to forget about that at a gig...I keep picturing what a bendy Stevie Ray Vaughn-style solo would sound like with the tuning mechanism still engaged.
