There are a few of them out there that are never mentioned -- like NEVER mentioned when great guitar players are the topic. Sure, players like Knopfler (Dire Straits) and Tom Verlaine (Television) are overlooked in the overall big picture, but within their respective genres (Adult Alt and Punk, respectively), they get their due.
Who are the guys that NEVER, EVER, EVER get mentioned, even by guitar geeks, despite being astonishing musicians?
My picks: Elliot Easton (The Cars): Just listen to his playing on "My Best Friend's Girlfriend" for evidence and you'll want to dig deeper.
Chris Difford (Squeeze): My pick for jaw-dropping solo by a man that's taken for granted is "Is That Love?" Um... wow.
Dave Gregory (XTC): Let's see, this pick will be hard, as he is surrounded by great musicians that don't get their due. Let's have you search out and listen to "Yacht Dance" from English Settlement. 6/8, nylon-string, pure beauty.

Have you heard the Teatro album? He does a Django cover on there. He's one of my favorites, too.

I hadn't given this much thought but my son, who plays guitar, suggests Jeff Loomis from Nevermore.
"Jeff who?" sez I.

Ok, hmmm...
Devin Bronson Benny Carey Tim Pierce Carl Verheyen George Bernhardt Doug Bossie Ty Tabor Geoff Tyson Steve Lukather Tal Bachman Dan Gilbert Shawn Lane (he's dead though) Danny Gatton (same as above) Nick Nolan Josh Zee (friggin amazing ability to play and jump around and sing at the same time) Chris DeGarmo Some guy name Jody Whitesides
I could go on, but I'll stop there for now. There's a bunch of amazing players who's playing you may have heard but you don't know the name. I threw my name in because I'm betting there's a whole lot of video game players that may have heard some of the nutty stuff I had to do on some video games (hopefully at some point I get that name brand recognition).

Johnny Marr (Smiths) Richard Lloyd (Television, Matthew Sweet) Kelly Jones (Stereophonics) Carl Verheyen, I agree with Jody on this one. Carl is great.

John Lennon. A fine lead player in his own right. Excellent on acoustic guitar. Maybe the best rhythm guitarist who ever lived.

Despite his success I never thought that Paul Simon got enought credit for his guitar playing. Also David Lindley.

Agreed on the Paul Simon tip. And I have yet another name:
Brinsley Schwarz (The Rumour)
Just the quintessential craftsman in the Steve Cropper mold. All tone, taste, and flavor!

How about Stephen Stills??? I always thought he was (is) as versatile on acoustic as he is on electric.

I saw a video concert of Steven Stills and Manassass a couple of years ago. If I didn't already know that he was playing with Manassas I would think that it was the Steven Stills show. He did all of the singing and played all of the guitar leads. Ben

Vince Gill, Lee Roy Parnell
And Patty loveless lead guitar player. I never learned his name but I sat in Roberts on Broadway in Nashville and listened (and watched in wonder) as he played for 6 hours up and down the neck of his guitar. He never missed a lick. Flat out amazing.

How about Roy Clark?
HeeHaw in the 70s was my first introduction to him, but I later learned he was quite a hell of a picker.

I think Roy is probably overrated. He is certainly a capable guitar player, but no better than a zillion other guys. Roy was such a good showman that people--most of them not guitar players--were impressed by what he appeared to be doing.

Hmmm, I would say Andres Segovia, but that would be a smart a$$ answer. I would say Ace Freely, but I would be laughed at. I will say Warren Haynes.
