I love the Rode NT1. It's a no-frills large diaphragm Neumann Wannabee. I first heard it at a studio being A-B'd with a Neumann using a gut string guitar. At first none of us there could hear the difference, then after really listening we could hear just a little more harshness on the very top end of the Rode. With the Rode going for $150 and the Neumann going for thousands...I bought two Rodes.
You've got to know your limitations. I don't know what your limitations are. I found out what mine were when I was twelve. I found out that there weren't too many limitations, if I did it my way. -Johnny Cash It's only music. -niteshift Mike Dunbar Music

Yup... Rodes aren't my favorite, but for the going price I think they're a pretty good deal. I picked up an NT2 out of curiosity a while ago, and recently grabbed a couple of NT3s (small diaphragm) recently. I use them quite a bit in my home studio. The Rodes don't agree with my voice much (perhaps not their fault ![[Linked Image]](http://www.justplainfolks.org/ubb/wink.gif) ) but the NT2 goes a long way with my nylon- and steel-string guitars. I'm very curious about the Rode tube mics & matched pairs that they've been producing lately. Anyone? ------------------ Shandy Lawson http://www.shandylawson.com

I always wanted to get a Rode Classic. I had heard a lot of good things about them. But I ended up getting an AKG Solid Tube and... HATED IT! It was very thin sounding. It was so so for acoustic guitars but I thought it was terrible for vocals. I didn't know if I got a bad one, or what. Anyone else use one of them?

Greetings!
I have to give a "thumbs up" to the NT-1. I have one in my collection that I pair with a dbx 386. I have used it for vocals, acoustic guitar, drum overhead, and amp mic'ing. Clean and sweet! It is my #2 microphone overall behind my first place tie between a Shure Beta 58 and an AKG C3000B.

Brian, I tried the Solid Tube, but also felt it was very thin (especially considering the glowing tube in it). The low-cost tube mic to beat nowdays seems to be the Rode NTK. The NT1000 is also REALLY hard to beat. I've heard ONLY good things about both of them. The NT1000 can be had for under $300. I haven't tried the NT1 myself other than in a store. I've always loved the Lawson tube mics (and have used them on sessions), but $2000 is a bit over my microphone budget. ------------------ Larry www.audibleresponse.com [This message has been edited by Lwilliam (edited 08-04-2002).]

Hello, all;
Another nice tube mic, believe it or not, is Nady's TCM-1100. It is really warm and suitable for vocals, and oh, so sensitive. For $299.00 I got the tube mic, a 20' 11 pin cable that connects it to it's own pre-amp/power supply, a very secure elastic mount, a durable wind screen, and a cool aluminum, well-padded case. I thought at first I was wasting my hard-earned cash, but not at all! It is a bargain at twice the price.

I LOVE my NTK!! For the money, it's probably the sweetest, warmest mic out there right now. Of all the vocals I've recorded in my studio (male and female) it sounded great for every type of voice. The NT-1 is a stellar value, too. I also own a RODE NT-3, and I'm very impressed with it's sound. Another excellent mic value is a Marshall MXL-V67. It's quite similar to the Neumann TLM-103, but costs less than half the price at around $270. That one's on my "gotta have it" list. ![[Linked Image]](http://www.justplainfolks.org/ubb/wink.gif)

OK I gotta chime in here. Couldn't resist.
We have been using a RODE NT-1 now for two years, live and in studio. It works great either way. We've heard other mics and tried others but seems like the RODE has the right balance.
This of course is used for our Bluegrass Band, using the single-mic set-up. Old is new again. We recorded our album with it, and have played numerous veneus with it always sounding great.
Two Thumbs up for RODE CT
