So now I have the Shure SM57 Instrument/Vocal Mic, Behringer MX602A Eurorack Mixer, Lo-Z Microphone Cable 20 Foot. I"m able to run it through my computer sound card and get a pretty good sound.
I'd like to hook up some studio speakers to this system, what kind of audio source do I need and how do I send it through?

The best way to go would of course be powered monoters hooked up to the main sound outs. This would give you the truest representation of what sound you are getting. But I don't have $ 500 to spend on that, so I hooked the mixer up to my stereo using the tape out ports on the mixer, and running that into my aux in of the stereo.

There are a few active (powered) nearfield monitors under $500 for a pair, but not too many. Yamaha MSP3 (the MSP5's are little over $500) Roland DS-30A Edirol makes a few under $500, but most are really not much better than most computer speakers. They make a model MA-10D which is only about $300 a pair. That's about as cheap as I'd recommend for any useful work. For just a little more than $500/pr, you can get monitors that can do the job pretty well, but quite frankly, until you start spending well over $1000, there will always be some sort of compromise - usually in the extreme bass and treble regions. I use two sets of monitors myself. Some old Auratone 5Cs (I don't think they're made any more) and Tannoy System 8 with a Carver 175/channel amp. It's a really good idea to try listen to several monitors before you decide to buy one or the other. I would also try to get a 30 day trial so you can see how they sound in YOUR studio. It seems people can learn to mix on a lot of different systems - it's just knowing how what you hear will translate to other systems...and remember, you will make many audio decisions based on what your monitors sound like. You should get the best that you can possibly afford. They should reveal as much detail when playing commercial CDs as possible. They WILL be your main reference. As far as hooking it up, Kaboom is right. Just take the sound card output into a stereo channel of your mixer (or a stereo auxillary input). Then run the mixer outputs to the powered monitors. You'll need to turn the monitors off (or completely down) when you're recording with a mic. ------------------ Larry www.audibleresponse.com [This message has been edited by Lwilliam (edited 08-28-2002).]
