JPF Meeting at Daily Grind in Stillwater Notes:

There were 4 of us in attendance; Wayne Hamilton, Kiki and Greg Webb from Sunblossom Records up in Walker, myself and Seth Horan. Seth discussed his touring and how he books his performances as well as giving out contact information about the venues he has performed in. We just enjoyed a little conversation, information exchange and great coffee.

On the other hand, many more members could be found at the Open Mic which Kristen Schuldt hosts each Wednesday at the Station 4 Bar. It was great fun chatting and listening to everyone.

Next networking/informational meeting will be held from 7:00 pm until 9:00 pm at the Station 4 Bar just before our Jam With The Band at the Station 4 Bar in St. Paul. Our feature band is Dunlops Hooligans.

ASCAP and the Radio Industry Announce the Largest Single Licensing Deal In Radio History

ASCAP and the Radio Music License Committee (RMLC), which represents most of the nearly 12,000 commercial radio stations in the U.S., announced a new agreement totaling in excess of $1.7 billion. This is the largest single licensing deal in the history of American radio. The settlement, which was approved by Federal District Court Judge William C. Conner on October 15, 2004, provides stations with the right to perform ASCAP music over the air and also as part of a simultaneous stream of their over-the-air signals on their Internet websites. It also provides fee certainty to both the radio industry and ASCAP’s members. ASCAP’s repertory is the largest in the world and contains more than 7.5 million copyrighted musical works of every style and genre, in addition to works in the repertories of over 60 affiliated foreign performing rights organizations.

The agreement finalizes license fees for the period 2001-2003 and establishes new ASCAP licenses for the period 2004-2009. The negotiated settlement replaces revenue-based license fees with a set payment schedule for the stations that will provide significant guaranteed income to ASCAP composers, songwriters and music publishers. Both sides will also benefit from a simplified and streamlined administration process.

”Over $1.7 billion, fixed through 2009, indicates the true economic value of our members’ music to the radio industry,” said ASCAP’s SVP, Director of Licensing Vincent Candilora. “We were pleased to have reached an agreement that establishes significant income increases for our members that they can count on well into the future, and provides the radio industry with the planning information and simplified administration it views as critical for business success. Effective negotiation avoided the heavy cost of litigation for both sides and resulted in an agreement which can only serve to strengthen the longstanding partnership between America’s leading creators of music and their most valuable customers.”

SoundExchange: Digital Rights Organization Announces Nationwide Search For Musical Performers Who Are Owed Royalties

SoundExchange, the first performance rights organization designated by the U.S. government to collect royalties on behalf of recording artists and record labels, is conducting a nationwide search for featured recording artists in order to disburse royalties owed. For the first time, performers stand to gain from non-interactive digital airplay—satellite radio, Internet radio and cable/direct TV radio—in the United States. If artists or their heirs do not come forward and register with SoundExchange by December 31, 2004, they will lose their share of the first royalties collected during the newly established organizations first distribution cycle- between 1996 and 2000.

Unlike ASCAP, BMI or SESAC, SoundExchange is the first institution to pay the actual featured performers for the public performance of sound recordings on which they appear, rather than songwriters, including many recording artists who have previously not been compensated. SoundExchange has already paid out almost $16 million covering over 200 million digital plays for approximately 6,000 members since its establishment in 2000. Based in Washington, D.C., SoundExchange is a nonprofit organization governed by a board of artist and label representatives.

Among the 38,000 artists who have not yet claimed their funds are such diverse acts as The Shangri-Las (1960’s girl group who sang the hit “Leader of the Pack”), Black Sheep (1990’s rap duo best know for “The Choice is Yours”) and The Count Five (garage rock band who influenced many with “Psychotic Reaction”).

SoundExchange will pay anywhere between $10 and approximately $6,000 depending on airplay. Every genre is represented including music in foreign languages.

”I am very pleased that SoundExchange has signed up thousands of artists. Our search, however, has made us realize how many thousands more we still must find. Today we are launching our most aggressive effort to locate and pay the deserving artists who are either unaware of their new right or who have not come forward to claim their earnings,” said SoundExchange Executive Director John Simson.

Featured artists—those listed on the cover of an album—get 90% of the artists’ share of royalties. An additional 10% of the artists share goes to the backup musicians and backup vocalists, via an independent trust fund administered by the, AFM and AFTRA. (For more info on this fund, go to www.raroyalties.org). In addition to these new U.S. digital royalties, featured artists who become official SoundExchange members by signing a Designation & Authorization letter are also eligible to receive valuable membership benefits such as the payment of foreign royalties. These royalties, collected on behalf of U.S. recording artists, are from both digital and terrestrial performances that SoundExchange has repatriated from certain foreign performance royalty organizations. Artists or their heirs, who sign up prior to December 31st, will receive both their past and current royalties in the first quarter of 2005.

Sing! America International Competition Posts Some Contests

NASHVILLE - Sing! America International, a new nationwide talent search, has posted a few contestants who have passed Round One levels of competition in the winners section of their web site at http://www.sing-america.com.

The Sing! America International competitions guarantee every contestant an opportunity for their recorded entry to be heard twice (on a double blind basis), by at least two music industry judges. Judges do not know the results of evaluations other than their own, and each entry has to be eliminated by both judges in every round of competition.

Contestants who are posted have been chosen at random, and not all contestants who have passed various rounds of judging are, or will be, posted. Entries and judging are ongoing and are grouped by the dates of entry, so some entries may be at Round One level of judging, while others may be at Round Three. The final twelve entries that have not been eliminated by any level of judging, will become the finalists. Entry deadlines are December 15.

Sing! America International offers talented American songwriters and vocalists the opportunity to fast-track their career by gaining major world-wide exposure. The competitions include:

Vocal Competition: Entries accepted August 2, 2004 through December 15, 2004. Three winners will receive a cash award and co-headline the Sing! America International Show in 2005, an All-American revue-style show that features many styles of American music from the 1800s through the music of today.

Songwriting Competition: Entries accepted August 2, 2004 through December 15, 2004. Grand prize is a cash award and use of the song as the theme song for the 2005 Sing! America International tour.

For information regarding Sing! America International, the talent and songwriting contests, and contest rules and entry information, go to the official web site (http://www.sing-america.com).
