I am getting a lot of weird emails from questionable charities. I know how to find legit ones and I caution any of you to be careful before supporting any solicitation that comes randomly from email. Even if it is a friendly source, be sure to check it out first. There are lots of charities that give the money directly to those who need it. I am less interested in buying something that gives a "percentage" to charity. I think it's best to give it directly and cut out the middle person who at the very least is covering their own costs for their product if not more.
I am surprised I haven't seen any posts here, so if you guys are doing things to raise money, please let us know.

Brian,
Any charities that I contribute to are through my church unless it's PBS. I really don't know which ones give percentages.
It's certainly an unsettling time. I hear that people want to adopt the orphaned children but that those specific countries do not have adoption infrastructures established.
Since it's winter time, I think it would be rather difficult to have a music fundraiser especially here in the North East.
Right now, I think the best thing artists can do is dig deep and pray that the money and supplies reach those who need it most.
Of course with any natural disaster, you have the profiteers and black markets being set up.
Take care,
Gary Gustin,RN

There's one in the works here but the details are still in formation. Arjuna's got two shows coming up that she's donating tips and CD sales proceeds. This is an excerpt from her January fan letter: of course, i still look to music, salve for my soul. i hope you will join me at my first ever New Jersey & New York City shows. tell your friends- everybody knows someone in NYC, right? all profits i receive from tips and CD sales at these shows will go to the tsunami relief effort. also, any odd numbers sales from CDBaby in Dec & Jan will get added on to my donation. i haven't decided to which organization i will give, but most likely it will be Doctors Without Borders, the UU Service Committee, the American Friends Service Committee, OXFAM, or UNICEF. suggestions are welcome.

Benefit Concert To Aid Tsunami Victims DORSET - Many of the area's finest musicians will stage an "all-star" concert to benefit victims of the recent tsunami disaster. The concert, titled, "Hands Across the Water, Southern Vermont Relief to South Asia," will be held at the Dorset Congregational Church on Saturday, Feb. 5 from 7:30 to 10 p.m. All proceeds will be donated to AmeriCares, which is providing medicines, medical relief and water purification in Sri Lanka, Indonesia, and India. The charity will funnel 99 percent of all donations received directly into these efforts. Scheduled to perform are Syd Straw, The Jim Gilmour Band, Chris Kleeman and Bob Stannard, The Bondville Boys with Laura Molinelli, Family & Friends featuring the Ralph Family, Antje Ruppert and John Pozzi, Rebecca Hall and Ken Anderson, Wayne DeVaul and Clarke Comollo, and other special guests. Rabbi Bob Alper will be master of ceremonies. The idea for the concert was first floated in an e-mail Molinelli sent to her musician friends on New Year's Eve. "As one person, it's hard to feel like I made much of a difference with my little donation to the Red Cross," Molinelli wrote in her appeal. The e-mail was forwarded enthusiastically to friends and family members, and not only the musicians, but the local business community stepped forward to help defray the cost of staging the concert and donate goods and services. There will be a live auction during the show, as well as a silent auction during intermission. Food and beverages provided by area restaurants and caterers will be sold during the show. "The response has been unbelievable," said Clarke Comollo. "Since Laura first e-mailed me and I forwarded it on to my friends, people I don't even know, from across the country, have been calling offering donations. It's really staggering how generous everyone has been. One person, someone who'd never even met me, a friend of a friend of a friend, called and wanted to know where he could send $1,000." "It's so encouraging to me that so many people in the community have come forth to be a part of this fund-raising event," added Molinelli. "It's a reminder that people are good, in spite of all the effort that the commercial media puts into trying to convince us that we're not. I wish that it wouldn't take a disaster like this to renew our humanness." "Let's do what little we can to help these poor people," Comollo urged. "I can't even imagine the hardship and sorrow they must be enduring. It's as if the southern half of the state of Vermont was washed away. The enormity of this catastrophe is unimaginable, but it sure feels good trying to do something for these folks. I just wish I could more eloquently express my sincere thanks to everyone who's offered to help, from the musicians, caterers, the Dorset Church, the merchants and their donations for the auction, folks offering to help clean up, those who wrote checks to pay for the posters and insurance, the sound technicians, and lots and lots more." The minimum suggested donation for the event is $15. Tickets will be available at the door, Northshire Bookstore and Vermont Kitchen Supply on Route 7A (Main Street, near Mother Myrick's) in Manchester Center. Checks should be made payable to "Hands Across the Water." In case of bad weather, the show will be held at the church the following night Sunday, Feb. 6, same time 7:30 to 10 p.m. Call 802-362-7188 on the day of the show if the weather looks dicey. Anyone wishing make donations may mail checks made out to hands "Across the Water" to PO Box 32 Manchester Center VT 05253 and for additional information call Comollo at 802-362-7188. --

Like Gary, I give through my church. It--and many others--funnel YEAR-ROUND donations from Week of Compassion into Church World Service BECAUSE when a disaster hits, these funds are then already waiting to be sent! PLUS--the folks who run Week of Compassion and Church World Service have something like a 95-98% contribution rating (i.e., cents-per-dollar ACTUALLY going to the disaster center instead of administrative and/or fundraising costs). Something to think about, folks... ------------------ www.dianatyler.com Earthy songs about heaven...and heavenly songs about more earthy things, too." - Will Cheshier

I wrote a song called Generosity which has been used to open four fundraisers down here so far Brian. The benifits have raised something like $20,000 to date I understand. Mostly thanks to Lions, Apex, Rotary, and local musicians. Claudio Barberi in Italy is also doing our reggae take of it, and it is creating a lot of interest. Can but try and spread the word. [QUOTE]Originally posted by Brian Austin Whitney: Hi Brian, I wrote a song about the tragedy in Asia (on the afternoon when it had happened) It's since been recorded and produced in Sweden by a man called Nad Sylvan and is in the style of Phil Collins/Peter Gabriel. We're trying to find an outlet for it to help the aid effort but not having much luck.(there don't seem to be any specific online record labels as there were a few weeks ago) We're hoping that it could possibly get placed in a documentary or short film, if considered strong enough. Maybe you'd like to listen to it? "As the tidal wave rolled in" at Nad's website http://www.nadsylvan.com Cheers, Carol Douglas.
