Hey Kids!! (You will also see this message posted at the Guest Speaker Post)-- I made it into its own topic as well. Frank and I have the web address for the Library of Congress Register of Copyrights Office where you can get all the forms any of you need to fill out and submit your material so it is properly protected. You simply follow the instructions they provide you with for sending in your lyric sheets and tapes/cds with accompanying music (if applicable). The fee is $30 (edited as per Sammy's post below..please read!!) per song although there may still be a way to do a compilation work in which you can include several songs for $30 -- but I don't know if doing it that way limits your ability to use each song separately.( I believe there also used to be some rule that you could only do that ONE time and thereafter any song you send would be $30 -- no add-ons). That would be a question for Julee because I'm not sure how that one works these days. Anyway, we simply do it the standard way -- 30 bucks per song. We have been copyrighting all of our material this way for many years and are members of ASCAP. Anyway, here is the home page of the Copyrights Office in DC: http://www.loc.gov/copyright/ Here's another one that will take you there: http://www.copyright.gov/records/ And if any of you have trouble I have the pdf file for the instructions and forms if you need them. Just e-mail me and I'll send them to you so you can print them out. Okay! Hope this helps anyone who needs it! Cindy, Thanks for posting these links. This is the best place for any one considering copywrite to start. The official forms with all the info in black and white. Al

The fee has gone up to $30 per submission. The current fee schedule is on the website Cindy listed above.

Ooops! Thanks for pointing that out Sammy! My mind is going in my old age. LOL! Actually the truth is that we've been doing this so long that I haven't read the PAI form recently and didn't realize the rates had gone up. MY bad. Thanks again, Sammy! Best, Cindy [This message has been edited by Cindy LaRosa (edited 03-13-2003).]

Yeah guys it is about 30 bucks but worth it in the long run. It takes a while too, I submitted "In Love Again Tonight" in June and Im still waiting for the certification. Ive read on some of these boards where it has taken as long as 8-11 months depending on how backed up they are. In the meanwhile I guess Im under "Copywrite Pending" Status. Al

Hey Al! Yeah one of the reasons it's been taking so long (and I read this in some special insert or magazine or SOMEWHERE -- I can't remember) is that ever since 9/11 they are taking HIGHEST security precautions on all mail going into and out of DC. ESPECIALLY into any federal buildings , Library of Congress, etc. And right now with all the turmoil etc, they are probably on just as high alert as they were back then.
So the wait is on! And yep....anything you've got in waiting is "copyright pending". One way to help with this is to send whatever you send in via Certified Mail. Then you have a receipt with exactly where and to whom you sent it and you will receive a card back in the mail because they have to sign for it so there will never be any question as to the fact that you sent it in when you did. That's what we do.
It used to only take a few weeks to maybe a month to get your certificates back, but now since it takes so long, it might be worth it for all to send via Certified Mail. It costs a few bucks -- but in the long run, it might serve everyone better so you at least have some kind of a receipt of WHEN you did it while waiting.
Hope this helps too! Best, Cindy
