I don't listen to much music. But if someone held a gun at my head and demanded that I put something in the CD player, it would be "Leon Russell And The Shelter People", or "Duane Allman Anthology I".
aw man,you don't have to put a gun to my head to listen to those cd's Ben,i have both of those, they are sweet on the ears!as is Colins jj Cale, what a treat!
Well, in my CD-ROM drive it's been of late some Teena Marie best-of's, The Go-Go's Greatest & Return To The Valley Of The Go-Go's, some Prince records, a Heart best-of CD, Loverboy BIG ONES best-of CD, and some odds and ends, such as House of Schock, feat. Go-Go's drummer Gina Schock on lead vocals, ECSTACY'S DANCE: The Best Of Narada Michael Walden, the soundtrack to Grease 2, and some others. On my MP3 players, oodles of tunes, including the overture to the anime series, Battle of the Planets, and the jazzy version of the theme to The Six Million Dollar Man, which is really cool to listen to while jogging/walking on the treadmill.
i put in a home-made best of from Gram Parsons, then Little Feat is on deck!

It has been a long time since I played a CD. I have a MP3 player in my car so listen to stuff via that rather than CD. Any CD is just ripped and added to my extensive database. I also have my laptop hooked up to my TV and home sound system. I have a huge library of music and just put my database on random play. I tend to just skip something I do not want to listen to. I hit the button a lot...LOL. I have been rehearsing a new set list so this past few weeks have been playing these songs till I know them inside out.... I am almost sick of hearing them. I have been listening to Yes a lot as I was given a boxed set anthology....nice. It makes a change listening to real musicians instead of the crap in the charts these days. Oh and when I want a laugh I listen to Justin Beiber or Taylor Swift.
I have a CD in the player in my car that has songs by folks like y'all the unsigned sing/songwriter. My CD player broke but thats whats in it... When I want to laugh I checkout the bloviating Nit Wits
Cheers
Paul
Well,
I have a Walkman Cassette Player, Don't Laugh, that I can put a Cassette in and play when I go out for a walk. I haven't used it in a while. You can probably do the same thing with a Mp3 Player or something like that. I am behind the times. Shut up Big Jim!
Ray is your Walkman clockwork.....? Does it have a huge horn sticking out where the music comes from? And does it have a little dog as a logo?
These museum piece may be worth a lot of money to antique collectors. With this money you might be able to buy a digital walkman....or even a multi media player.
Folks,
I think Big Jim has been peeking! Who told him I have to hitch up the mules to the wagon to haul my, uh, walkman around the block to listen to my latest, uh, cylender.
I listened to MUSIC FOR ALL SEASONS, a 5 CD Set of light Classical music from Reader's Digest. I also listened to some Carl Smith, a Major Country Artist from the 50's.
Ray I think I have the same Readers Digest box set but mine is a very old one from the 60s. My dad bought it when I was a teenager. I inherited it when he passed away. it is vinyl with a dozen 12" LP records......there is some great stuff on it. Great music is timeless and has no age barriers.

Hey there Canadian! Have you heard that other disc that I posted yesterday -- Copyright? They're a Vancouver band formed from the ashes of a punk band called Slow. First 2 albums are flat-out great. Hard sound to describe, but really cool. Kinda post-grunge, or something.

JPF Mentor and one of my best friends Harold Payne co-wrote every songs (he wrote the lyrics) of the new Bobby Womack album Bravest Man In The World which is being called one of the most important Soul records in history. It's old school soul meets sparse British Electronica. He wrote the songs with the guy from Blur and the Gorillaz and the producer of Adele. People think it might go as far as a nomination for Album of the Year in the Grammys. It's very different and requires an open mind. Read the rave reviews on Amazon or read this review:
http://beatsperminute.com/reviews/album-review-bobby-womack-the-bravest-man-in-the-universe/Bobby was just inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009.

Yesterday I listened to Cal Smith's CD that includes the song: THE LORD KNOWS I'M DRINKING. A Bill Anderson Song you all should have in your Collection!
Interesting replies and topic, Ray:
For me, it's all over the map. Rachmaninoff, Alison Krauss, The Beatles, Martin Denny, Jack Jones, Duke Ellington, Brubeck, George Strait, Don Williams, Willie Nelson, Hank Williams, Sr., Wilson Phillips and the list goes on.
Most of the CDs in my player with the big speakers are my own. When nobody is home, I sit quietly and try to figure out how I'd re-record a line or phrase or change the melody if I ever do the song again. It's not self-worship 'cause I really don't care much for my vocals. When all is said and done, I'm only attempting to be a songwriter... not an artist or performer.
Self improvement is my objective. Too bad it isn't working... LOL!
Peter Wolf - Midnight Souveniers

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zw3w1iKiq8Mwell, I wonder which song they're gonna play when we go.
I hope it's something quiet and minor and peaceful and slow.
when we float out into the ether, into the Everlasting Arms,
I hope we don't hear Marley's chains we forged in life.
'cause the chains I been hearing now for most of my life.
Did you hear the '59 Sound coming through on Grandmama's radio?
Did you hear the rattling chains in the hospital walls?
Did you hear the old gospel choir when they came to carry you over?
Did you hear your favorite song one last time?
And I wonder were you scared when the metal hit the glass?
See, I was playing a show down the road
when your spirit left your body.
And they told me on the front lawn.
I'm sorry I couldn't go,
but I still know the song and the words and her name and the reasons.
And I know 'cause we were kids and we used to hang.

I AM THE CITY - ABBA
ABBA's identification with the city is complete. The city throbs, and so does the beat. They are singing about Stockholm. This island city extends its invitation.
Bjorn is obviously flying back to Stockholm and ready to land at Arlanda Airport. He is looking through the clouds at his sprawling city. It is a revelation, beautiful. It is constantly growing even if it is because of illegal immigration. The city is organic, a living thing. I came to live in bustling Nashville during the ABBA years and became familiar with crowded streets and never ending noise. I contributed to its melting pot, walking its streets and talking the language of country music. I have walked the streets of Stockholm also, and Nashville and Stockholm have much in common: people, cars, hotels, parks, cocktail bars and funny smells.
Stockholm is worthy of worship in "I Am The City." Its citizens shop at NK, the department store on Hamngatan. By night, they dance to ABBA music in local discotheques while grabbing pieces of the fatted calf.
This vision of Stockholm is very different from the one in the song "Tiger." In "Tiger" night life has its dangers. It could be alcoholism, prostitution or the loss of one's identity. The city becomes a jungle. Still, ABBA are city folk and cease to function without it.
I AM THE CITY
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6PLBXCXGRQ Coming through a cloud you're looking at me from above
And I'm a revelation spreading out before your eyes
And you find me beautiful and irresistible
A giant creature that forever seems to grow in size
And you feel a strange attraction
The air is vibrant and electrified
Welcome to me here I am, my arms are open wide
Somewhere in the middle of the neverending noise
There is a pulse, a steady rhythm of a heart that beats
And a million voices blend into a single voice
And you can hear it in the clamor of the crowded streets
People come and take their chances
Sometimes you win sometimes you lose a lot
Come make your own contribution to this melting pot
I'm the street you walk
The language you talk
I am the city
The skyline is me and the energy
I am the city
The famous hotels and the cocktail bars
And the funny smells
And the turmoil, the cars and the people
The air that you're breathing is me
Yes I am the city you let me be
People feed me with their lives I am a hungry soul
And they all worship me and pay their homage day and night
Every day I knew a lot of tired shopping feet
But come the night they will be dancing in the neon light
Dazzled by the crazy magic
They're grabbing pieces of the fatted calf
And in the wind if you listen hard you'll hear me laugh
I'm the street you walk
The language you talk
I am the city
The skyline is me and the energy
I am the city
The famous hotels and the cocktail bars
And the funny smells
And the turmoil, the cars and the people
The parks and the squares that you see
All the sounds that you hear
And the air that you're breathing is me
Yes, I am the city you let me be
I am the city
You let me be
I am the city
The famous hotels and the cocktail bars
And the funny smells
And the turmoil, the cars and the people
The air that you're breathing is me
Coming through a cloud

My mp4 has a load of artists on, as I could start with Bob Dylan, then go on to Bob Geldof. After that, maybe John Denver, followed by extreme metal, and then end on a bluegrass high with Del and the band, Jason Carter (On The Move), or the Gibson Brothers (or a bit of the non-English song variety because I have German and Japanese on my mp4 aswell). If this were a "artist in your head right now" thread, would have to be the Gibson Brothers (matter of fact, I'm waiting for a CD of theirs to come in the post). As for which Gibson Brothers band I'm on about, it's the bluegrass band from New York.
Graham Parker & The Rumour - Squeezing Out Sparks

Hey Mike,
I might have an old 45' stored away in the attic of the song "Here comes Peter-Cotton-Tail, hoppin down the bunny trail" from the 50's. You're probably too young to remember that one! It's probably in the same box with The Chipmunk's, "Alvin's Harmonica" and "Christmas don't be late," which aren't quite as old. I had an older sister that bought lots of records back in the day--Bobby Rydell, Bobby Darin, Elvis, Frankie Avalon, Paul Anka, Little Richard, --I haven't played them in 35-40 years.
Have a nice Easter, everyone!
steady-eddie.
hey Eddie,no,i don't have that 45 or the chipmunks but would like to get my paws on some that are old.I've bought a few Disney lp's that are pretty old and in good shape.I don't play them but they look cool.i have a lot of 1960's 45's,most were from my sisters.i use to work for a jukebox amusement company in the 80's ,i grabbed a lot of 45's from there, especially the ones with the jackets that have pictures on them. You have a nice Easter also!Mike

The Chain
http://www.cmt.com/videos/misc/916021/the-chain-from-the-2013-cmt-music-awards.jhtml#id=1708542Little Big Town turned "The Chain" into a monster. Fleetwood Mac's rendition is meek by comparison. Jimi Westbrook rages from the depths of his soul when he screams, "If you don't love me now, you will never love me again!!" Chills run through me, something that hasn't happened since early rock n' roll. I'm in love with LBT. I saw them at the Ryman in April and will drive to Louisville (my hometown) in December to see them again. Little Big Town exploded with the Tornado album and their new producer, Jay Joyce. I went out and bought all their previous CDs, and every song is good. Part of the problem before Joyce was in the packaging of the CDs. Titles on the cases are hard to read. Jay Joyce also produced the Chief CD for Eric Church. He knows what he's doing.

is Shrimp Boat a Louisiana band Pop?
Robert Palmer-Sneakin' Sally Through The Alley
Robert Palmer-Pressure Drop
No, Shrimp Boat is a Chicago band from the late 80s and early 90s.
From AllMusic.com:
Precursors of the esoteric sound eventually tagged "post-rock," Shrimp Boat was among the key Chicago indie bands of their era, with members later going on to even greater success in groups like the Sea and Cake... Their affinity for unusual time signatures, jazz-influenced structures and exotic rhythms were unlike anything else on the contemporary Chicago club circuit. They added drummer Eric Claridge in 1986 and issued their debut cassette album Some Biscuit in 1988, followed later that same year by Daylight Savings. On their own Specimen Products label, they issued their first vinyl LP Speckly in 1989. That year, Claridge left the band, replaced by Brad Wood. Shrimp Boat signed to Bar/None in 1990 and recorded their next album, Duende, that same year. The album didn't see release until 1992, and in the meantime, the band self-released the Volume 1 collection. 1993 saw the release of Cavale, but by this time, both Kroll and Wood had exited, while Eric Claridge returned to the band as bassist and Tom Jasek stepped in on drums. Within a few months of the album's release Shrimp Boat disbanded; Prekop and Claridge soon reunited in the Sea and Cake, while Wood emerged as one of the most sought-after producers in indie rock, helming records for the likes of Liz Phair, Veruca Salt and the Smashing Pumpkins.
And this is their very good review of the collection, itself:

Bombino is really good.
African guitar player... member of the nomadic Tuareg tribe. Very blues-y, though. That album was produced by Dan Auerbach (The Black Keys), who really accents those aspects of the music.

My partner in A1A (and he fills in the guitar 2 spot with our group sometimes) recently did an appraisal on Trucks house, it's on the other side of town here, the guy has a studio there at their constant disposal that is awesome, and more guitars laying around than he could count. Some awesome music, when he turns on the slide for a break it cuts through so pure...cool music. rock on.
George Harrison - All Things Must Pass
And, by the way, are all of you familiar with those Michael Nesmith records that I was listening to?
The first 2 records from Nez and the First National Band really should be right up the alley of a lot of folks here. He was the only real musician in The Monkees and proved it with those FNB records. Really one of the first rock guys, along with The Byrds and Gram Parsons, to do country music right and without a hint of irony. Predates The Eagles and Poco and those guys, even.
Recommend checking it out.

Seems you listen to a LOT of music, lol
I do. A ton.
My job allows me to listen to music while I work, so I get to listen to anywhere from 4-6 albums a day, usually.
That's also why you probably see a lot of artists that you may not recognize -- I keep digging to find things that will sound fresh and when I hear stuff on the radio all the time, it just doesn't cut it for me. I get sick of it when I hear it so much.
For instance, I love The Beatles, but you'll almost never see their albums popping up in my posts in here for that very reason.
And, if something looks interesting to you, ask me. I love to talk about the tunes that I'm listening to!
Cool. I did check out The Exploding hearts, pretty cool.
Most office environments play top 40 radio ALL day.
They played big hits over and over so many times, I can name the job I was at and the year when the song was a hit, cause I worked alot of contract jobs.
every once in a while a song was good enough to withstand it.
I recall "sometimes love aint enough" Don henley and patty smith, was working with spreadsheets and mainframe, lol
I recall, "I dont wanna be" Gavin Mcgraw was working in a hospital.
and few others, when I hear those songs now, I immediately am right back in that place, I can even name mistakes I made during those times, and conversations with others.
Weird how music creates associations.

THE SONG THAT CHANGED LITTLE BIG TOWN'S LIFE
Article
http://www.littlebigtown.com/story/news/chicago-tribune-arrived-courtesy-of-a-boat-sort-ofPontoon
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V0O0nzkESTIThe song that changed Little Big Town's life wasn't really much of anything, just a tiny little slip of a thing, "a silly song about a boat," is how singer Karen Fairchild puts it, that turned into a monster.
Little Big Town had been together for fourteen years when "Pontoon," a goofy Jello shot of a song, landed in 2012, and they soon discovered that the difference between being a well-respected veteran act with a handful of decent-sized hits and being a well-respected veteran act with a crossover No. 1 summer smash was all the difference in the world.
The quartet's members, all of whom are also lead vocalists, have been friends forever, and are hopelessly intertwined in just about every way possible: Fairchild and Kimberly Schlapman have been friends since college; Fairchild and Jimi Westbrook are married. They no longer tour together in one bus ("thank the Lord," says Fairchild), but the members of Little Big Town are famously tight.
Having their first No. 1 hit didn't change them much as a band, but "it makes us happy, I can tell you that," says Fairchild, on a day off from the band's tour with Keith Urban (they play the United Center on Friday). "You have to love all the music you make the same. They're all your babies. But when one of them gets so much attention and love and takes your career to a whole new level, it's so exciting. It brings us so much joy, and so many opportunities. That's been the biggest surprise of all."
The members of Little Big Town didn't write "Pontoon," but they knew a careermaker when they heard one, and in the days before the song was released, the air around them felt different. "Pontoon" might not elevate them to the ranks of Urbans, Chesneys and Swifts, the thinking went, but if it didn't, nothing would.
"I think on some songs you know, you know? But you still don't know," is the best way Fairchild can explain it. "When we heard 'Pontoon,' we went in the studio and cut it first on purpose, because we knew it was gonna lead the record. But if you could figure out (how to have a hit), you would do it over and over. You can have a gut feeling, and we did, that if we could get country radio to play it, it would be a big moment."
"Pontoon" was released in April 2012, but it wasn't until the band's performance at CMT awards in June (they performed in an actual boat that had been brought onstage) that the song began to make an impact. "We knew that was going to be a pivotal performance, that it was gonna punch that song to a different level, or it wasn't," Fairchild remembers. "Looking out at our artist friends (in the audience) standing up and starting to sing, I though, Gosh, this song could really be something. The next morning, we got some great feedback and it kind of snowballed. It really started for us that night."
By the time "Pontoon" exploded, the band had been together since the late '90s, their story one of almost textbook Nashville hardships: death (Schlapman's husband), divorces (band member Phillip Sweet's, and Fairchild's first marriage), failed label deals and humiliating day jobs.
By the time "Tornado," the band's fifth studio disc and the birthplace of "Pontoon," was released, Little Big Town had earned a comfortable berth as one of country music's more reliable makers of modest hits, their albums solid mixes of bluegrass harmonies and poppy melodies, "though we do love things that have a little bit of grit and swampiness, that feel a little raw and dirty as well."
It took almost a decade and a half for the band to land its first truly outsized hit, but Fairchild feels lucky merely to have survived that long. Having their first blockbuster mid-career means "it's sweeter now," she says. "There's a lot to navigate as a new artist … knowing whose advice you should take and whose you should not take. How can you know the scope of it? You can make a decision that dictates that you only get to make one record or a couple of singles, maybe you make a wrong choice on a song. It's just sad to think that someone who has a gift to share, that it can be over so quickly."
"Tornado" seems to have an infinite number of potential singles, including "Your Side of the Bed," a mournful and intimate song about the dissolution of a relationship, sung George-and-Tammy-style by Fairchild and Westbrook. Because the more famous Little Big Town gets the more fans feel as if they personally know the band's members, the song has caused no end of concern. "Some of the fans are like, 'Is this song about y'all?'" Fairchild says. "We didn't write it from our perspective. It's funny, in the live show they'll yell, 'Kiss her! Kiss her!' It's like they get worried."
Little Big Town are already "headlong into the process" of making a new album, though they must first finish the winter leg of their tour with Urban, with whom the band has toured and collaborated for years. "We went on the first arena tour Keith ever did," Fairchild says. "It was a real exciting time. He's got such a beautiful family and we love his crew and his band." The group sometimes hangs out with Urban and wife Nicole Kidman, Fairchild says, though they mostly run into each other backstage at catering. That Little Big Town may be headlining arenas themselves next time isn't lost on them, but they're trying not to think about it too much. "We know how to appreciate (things), and we know how hard we've worked to get here," says Fairchild. "We try to really soak it in and be in the moment, because it might not always be here."
nothing........................and that's good.
Todd,

PLAY IT AGAIN is Luke Bryan's next single from Crash My Party. It's themes are typical. A girl sits on the tailgate of a truck, and Luke is elated to discover she has no boy friend. She is listening to the radio and waiting for her favorite song. She comes to life when she hears it and associates it with Luke. He shows up Friday night with his guitar and plays it. He scores! Got to learn this one.
PLAY IT AGAIN
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kaIsVhsqZ4gShe was sittin' all alone over on the tailgate
Tan legs swingin' by a Georgia plate
I was lookin' for her boyfriend
Thinkin', no way she ain't got one
Soon as I sat down I was fallin' in love
Tryin' to pour a little sugar in her Dixie cup
Talkin' over the speakers in the back of that truck
She jumped up and cut me off
She was like, oh my God, this is my song
I've been listenin' to the radio all night long
Sittin' 'round waitin' for it to come on and here it is
She was like, come here boy, I wanna dance
'Fore I said a word, she was takin' my hand
Spinnin' me around 'til it faded out
And she gave me a kiss
And she said, play it again, play it again, play it again
And I said, play it again, play it again, play it again
I'd gave that DJ my last dime
If he would have played it just one more time
But a little while later
We were sittin' in the drive in my truck
Before I walked her to the door
I was scannin' like a fool AM, FM, XM too
But I stopped real quick when I heard that groove
Man, you should have seen her light up
She was like, oh my God, this is my song
We've been listenin' to the radio all night long
I can't believe that it came back on, but here it is
She was like, come here boy, I wanna dance
'Fore I said a word, she was takin' my hand
Spinnin' in the headlights she gave me a goodnight kiss
And I said, play it again, play it again, play it again
And she said, play it again, play it again, play it again
The next Friday night we were sittin' out under the stars
You should have seen her smile when I broke out my guitar
She was like, oh my God, this is my song
I've been listenin' to the radio all night long
Sittin' 'round waitin' for it to come on and here it is
She was like, come here boy, I wanna dance
'Fore I said a word, she was takin' my hand
Spinnin' in the headlights she gave me a goodnight kiss
And she said, play it again, play it again, play it again
And I said, play it again, play it again, play it again
Yeah, play it again, play it again, play it again
Somebody, play it again, play it again, play it again

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1AHndfP7qMSouth Georgia must be a rough place. I've been through Georgia on the way to Florida, but never encountered any gators, wild pigs or copperheads. Don't want to! But this is where Luke Bryan goes to get away from the city. I didn't know what a Jon boat was, so I googled it. It's a flat-bottomed boast suitable for fishing. I've heard enough of Luke's songs to know that he was a real country boy in his young days. What on earth is a crawfish basket? "Basket" and "rabbits" make a unique rhyme. Never seen that one. Not that many of us are affected by the stock market, but we're all affected by gas prices. Fogerty does "swamp rock," and Luke does "swamp country." Both are original artists.
"MUCKALEE CREEK WATER"
It flows underneath the 32 bridge,
And cuts through the heart of South Georgia.
Big copperheads and mean wild pigs,
And gators in the weeds waitin' for ya.
I leave my phone in the truck,
I leave my truck at the road
My four-wheeler gets me where I wanna go
I leave the world behind,
I pull my hat down low,
Get back to my roots, by a full moon glow
I got an old Jon boat that I stowed down there
On them hot summer nights when I get a-wild hare
I got a moonshine stash in a cypress stump
And a catfish line going - bump bump
An old tractor tire where I sit by the fire
And drink to a sweet swamp song.
So if you're looking for me, don't even bother
When I dip my feet in that Muckalee creek water.
Daddy brought me down here when I was a kid
Taught me how to bait a crawfish basket.
From the time I was old enough to walk
He had me running down squirrels and rabbits.
I feel right at home in this neck of the woods
If this was all I had, I'd be living good
So let the stock market do what it's gonna do
Let the dollar go down and gas over the roof
I got an old Jon boat that I stowed down there
On them hot summer nights when I get a-wild hare
I got a moonshine stash in a cypress stump
And a catfish line going - bump bump
An old tractor tire where I sit by the fire
And drink to a sweet swamp song.
So if you're looking for me, don't even bother
When I dip my feet in that Muckalee creek water.
I'm free, and I'm me
Being everything that I wanna be
Nobody jacking with me,
No sign of the city lights.
Hell with the city lights!
Well I got an old Jon boat that I stowed down there
On them hot summer nights when I get a-wild hare
I got a moonshine stash in a cypress stump
And a catfish line going - bump bump bump
An old tractor tire where I sit by the fire
And drink to a sweet swamp song.
So if you're looking for me, don't even holler
When I get down deep in that Muckalee creek water.
That Muckalee creek water.
well we down here in Louisiana call them "crawfish nets" Jim,you tie your bait in the middle and the mudbugs go in it and when you pick them up out of the water, voila!

I bought this 5 album set at Walmart for 20 bucks and linked one song per disc. Elvis Presley is the father of modern music. He began recording with Sam Phillips at Sun Records in Memphis in 1954. All the music of the last 60 years rests on the shoulders of Elvis' early recordings. Never before or since has such raw sexuality been expressed in music. The army tamed Elvis. Otherwise he might have had 20 more number ones.

Little Big Town performs "Day Drinking" on the Today show.
http://www.today.com/video/today/55552647#55552806This is a hard-working band!
A couple of weeks ago, I downloaded an album called Country Boy: A Bluegrass Tribute To John Denver (by Special Consensus and features guests including Jason Carter). Haven't listened to it recently, but have Country Roads in my head.
Greetings, is, was one of the most underrated albums of all time, the guy was nearly dropped from his label cause it didnt sell.
Who writes songs this powerful at 23?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0JOOEnRopM
David Broza...."a time of trains".....because "blood for blood" was stuck in my head this morning when I woke up.
Did you guys notice the number of views this post has? And those are all unique, not repeat views. Must be something in here that search engines are sending people to. Wish they'd register and join us!
Brian
Well,
When I posted this question some 2 years ago I didn't expect it to still be running today. Now If I only had as much luck placing some of my songs!
Yesterday I Listened to PICTURES AT AN EXHIBITION by Barry Douglas, Composer Mussorgsky. As well as "Dante" Sonata, Composer Liszt.
David Broza...."a time of trains".....because "blood for blood" was stuck in my head this morning when I woke up.
I saw David Broza in the basement of a Jewish Community Center on the North Side of Chicago back in the early 80s. Went with my youth group and expected him to be pretty lame. Shocked me when this guy sat down, all by himself, with a nylon string guitar, and commenced to play the SH!T out of that thing.
Even more surprised when I saw a PBS special with him playing "Live From Masada" on top of the famous mountain in Israel, playing to a crowd of tens of thousands. ("With special guests: Jackson Browne…" and a few more that I had heard of.)
Yeah, he's notoriously hard on his rigs.....has to have them reinforced so he doesn't break through the wood when he beats the hell out of them. I saw him in a small joint in eugene oregon and he was fruggin' intense.
there was talk of "blood for blood" becoming the national anthem for israel, and whenever his country men show up to his gigs, I guess it gets even more intense.
Luke Bryan & Little Big Town
LB & LBT
strange, I didn't do much listening today, needed a break.....BUT......I did wake up with "only the lonely" by the motels in my head this morning.......listened to it with my coffee....and that was it.
SAVE YOUR SIN FOR SOMEONE ELSE - Little Big Town
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTaxQ8qdbFAFairchild is the alpha female in the group, so I'm glad to see Kimberly get a strong piece. She can obviously hold her own.
oohh, HARRY!!!.....love that guy, wrote some of the greatest pop rock songs ever.
Today it was some crowded house (temple of low men) this morning......and I've been listening to assorted pugwash during my ciggy breaks.
Didja hear?
Pugwash is finally gonna come and tour the States!
yeah, heard that this morning......about frickin' time.
had to take in some Kevin Gilbert and related projects for about the last two hours.......now it's back to work.
Devo!!!!.....yessss. Level 42 "world machine" this morning.
Big Audio Dynamite - Megatop Phoenix

what do you think of "morning phase"?.........I dig it.
I like it.
Although, for the most part it kinda floats pleasantly by. No real grabbers (yet) as far as singles are concerned. Nonetheless, Dig it.
yeah, that's what I love about it......the way it floats by.
I just recently updated my collection on cd from album and cassette to Dio's The Last In Line and Duran Duran's Decade.
I was always the one in the crowd that liked acts that the one side hated.
The producers, debut record.
Looked at you tube for an eighties ballad that would not get out of my head by Robert John called Sad Eyes.
I would like to find some nice ballad and rock collections from 1980 to 1982. There seemed to be a distict quality with those acts before MTV and the hair band craze.
Genesis - Selling England by the Pound
Selling England By The Pound
It was morphine this morning, woke up with "rope on fire" in my head.
Staying on the retro theme, I lost this cd somewhere, and you cant even buy the singles, have to buy the physical cd.
Luckily the thieves on youtube have it up lol
This album is not for everyone, it's raw rock n roll, basicly just electric guitar using a marshall, and featuring Jason Bonham on drums. But it covers cream, hendrix, Led Zep, Dylan like lyrics, kind of blacksabbath too in imagery.
Some of the songs are fantastic too, all little steven. The album is called born again savage.
My favorites from the album. Sounds like an acid trip kind of record, but it rocks.

I also see some Gerry rafferty "city to city" and some XTC "big express" up there.........woot!!

Scott Campbell's 'Full assembly required.' I've been listening to this CD in my car for the last week or so. This CD ranks right up there with Springsteen's 'Seeger Sessions' at the apex of Americana music and storytelling. Campbell is an unrecognized songwriting and musical genius. It's a shame more people haven't heard of him.
Iggy Pop - The Idiot
it's late so i got cans on,first time listening to it with those,i like it.
another cd of songs that JPfolks collaborated on!Diggin' it!
I think you guys are doing good enough work here to put together some albums... mixing genres isn't always positive, but perhaps once we finish the year of Top 10 Lists we'll put up the Best of the Best. Plus I intend to move all Top 10 songs into the second round of the music awards this year. Perhaps that will motivate some more folks to post and vote.
i know that would be a cool cd.There is a lot of good songs here.
Little Big Town talks about their new record. These beautiful, talented, articulate people are at the top of their game.

LONELY EYES - Chris Young
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DBaQBKY8wfATuesday night crowded bar
Some guy lights a cheap cigar
Bartender yells at him
So he walks out and you walk in
Right through that cloud of smoke
Catcalls and dirty jokes
Scan the room a couple times
Find a seat right next to mine
Lonely eyes
Well, it sure looks like
You just might
Be looking for something
For something, whoa
Look at me
And I think you'll see
Those lonely eyes
Don't have to be alone tonight
They analyze your glass of wine
Roll away a pickup line
Now and then they check your phone
Catch mine and let 'em go
From the little bit I've seen
They're the perfect shade of green
Next time they come my way,
Heaven help me, make 'em stay
Lonely eyes
Well, it sure looks like
You just might
Be looking for something
For something, whoa
Look at me
And I think you'll see
Those lonely eyes
Don't have to be alone tonight
Don't make me pay my tab, catch a cab
Go home and kick myself to sleep tonight
Gimme a sign, just a smile
Baby, I'll be glad to lose myself deep inside
Lonely eyes
Lonely eyes
Sure looks like
You just might
Be looking for something
For something, whoa
Look at me
And I think you'll see
Those lonely eyes
They don't have to be alone tonight
Lonely eyes, you don't have to be alone tonight
"I Never Go Around Mirrors" is a sad country song indeed. The man in it is going to waste, never combing his hair or shaving his face. He is an alcoholic. Lefty Frizzell & Sanger Shafer wrote the song. Lefty was an alcoholic who died at age 47. Keith Whitley was also an alcoholic and literally drank himself to death at 33. The idea is that the man cannot stand to look in mirrors and see himself without his woman. He has a heartache to hide. He sees himself as half a man, and it tears him up to see himself cry. This song has been covered by many country singers, the latest being Sturgill Simpson. I love the self-pity!

I can't stand to see
A good man go to waste
One who never combs his hair
Or shaves his face
A man who leans on wine
Over love that's told a lie
Oh, it tears me up to see
A grown man cry
So I never go around mirrors
I can't stand to see me
Without you by my side
No, I never go around mirrors
Because I gotta heartache to hide
I can't stand to be
Where heartaches hang around
It's so easy for the blues to get me down
To see a grown man crawl
Is more than I can stand
And I look into the eyes of half a man
So I don't go around mirrors
I can't stand to see
Me without you by my side
No, I never go around mirrors
Because I gotta heartache to hide
And it tears me up to see
A grown man cry
Golly Jim,
Didja know I have an Autograph of Lefty. Got it on a Songbook by Lefty in the early 60's when he played the EM Club at the Corpus Christi, Texas Naval Air station. Lefty was a Superstar!

Yeah Brian,
Now if I could only turn it into money! Have a great Thanksgiving everybody!
Well,
Now that Thanksgiving is over 26 Nov 2016 it is time to break out the Christmas Music. This year I am going to play some Alvin and the Chipmunks. Have to go big, you know! Haven't played the Chipmunks for several years.
Well right now Leonard Cohen occupies all the slots in my car's 6cd changer....Eva Cassidy in my office.
A GREAT instrumental Holiday CD is Dave Lanz's Christmas Eve. One of my all time favorites... if you like beautiful solo piano....
Right now? Hmmm, not sure let me check...
Matchbox Twenty, Mad Season
Peace,
TC
PS: @PopTodd - a big thumbs up on your selections!
Ray,
Fond memories as a little kid remembering when the first Chipmunk song came out--which I believe was "Alvin's Harmonica," but I really liked the song "Christmas Don't Be Late!"
"Want a plane that loops the loop...........I still want a hoo-oola hoop! We can hardly stand the wait, please Christmas don't be late!" (I used to sing that song in "chipmunk" style, maybe I should do a cover).......

KIKO DINUCCI - CORTES CURTOS
A great 2017 release... zany Brazilian experimental pop music. Polyrhythmic and a bit insane. But in all the best possible ways. It's like he listened to Tom Zé and said, "He didn't go far enough. Let's throw in some Captain Beefheart, too!" And... BONUS: it's as free download at Kiko's site!

Wow - right this minute it's: "The Ramones - Greatest Hits".

Reminds me of being in my early and mid 20s; a young adult going out to the bars at night to hang with my friends and meet people. Eventually I met my wife at one of those bars. Good memories. The best of times.
Well,
Today I am listening to some Speedy West and Jimmy Bryant.
Well,
This morning I am listening to some Jerry Byrd, Steel Guitar Player now on CD from a LP Record I bought in a Record Store on Guam in about 1960. Some Fantastic Music.
Been listening to a batch of Fairport Convention CDs. Currently got Unhalfbricking playing and the late lamented Sandy Denny singing
Joe Bonamassa--
Killer guitar work, and so much soul in everything he records!
Mackie
Are people still using CDs? Should I change this to playlist?
I do. I can't imagine fiddling with a phone or otherwise while driving.
well on my turntable,i have Bob Dylan - Hard Rain,a very good live album from Bob.
Well,
Today I am listening to Jim Reeves The legend begins. On CD. Do people still listen to CD'S? Well I get maybe 6 different Catalogs every so often for CD's Mostly from the past of course. I have my eye on a set of CD's, The complete Piano Sonatas by Beethoven. Yes, CD's are alive and well!!
Well,
I broke out some Hank Snow from a CD Boxed set I bought some time ago. First song is !'M MOVING ON.
No wonder why Ray is so insistent on CDs not being dead. He started this thread and wants it to live on right Ray?
Now I get it.
Upon the recommendation of a friend who is a couple of decades younger, my music listening is all youtube now. It works really well. Works at the gym on my phone. My phone plugs it into the truck. So far I've been able to find any song that I can think of and load it into my playlists. I can arrange the song order any way that I like.
My buddy gives em 10 bucks a month to eliminate the commercials. The commercials dont bother me that much and you can opt out after 5 seconds on most.
Eh,
No FD. I am not trying to save the CD. People must have bought Millions of CD'S in the last 30 years. I get at least 5 Catalogs on a regular basis from CD sources. I still buy CD'S from time to time. Uh, bye the way, people have also bought millions of Vinyl records over the last 60 or 70 years. And they may still play them from time to time! Sometime this year I am buying at least one CD set. And further more! If you are a songwriter you want somebody to cut some of your songs and put out a CD.
Vinyl will hang around because there is collectors value. If you have early Beatles or Rolling Stones records, or rare records in prestine condition, they are worth a lot more than what they were purchased for. And there are audiophilles who still prefer the sound of vinyl. Vinyl is also fun to use, they look cool, and vinyl players with vinyl records can also be used as an instrument.
The poor old cd no appeal. But I understand now Ray,....I understand.
I've got Cougars In America in the stereo! Cool solo band that recently changed to a duo, renamed Animals in Motion. The guitarist/vocalist/etc. plays while his partner paints really neat images of the songs on stage. Saw them randomly at a festival we were playing this summer - walked up and thought, "Oh cool they are playing Cougars in America over the speakers" - when it turned out to be the band live! Neat to recognize them.
What else is there? Mp3 is usually crap quality sound.
You can hold a cd in your hand, call it yours and read the notes on the back. Sometimes the graphics are great too.
Mp3s/downloads are ok for people who's hearing is shot to hell but it's like buying carrots in a can.
Vic
"Fear" ...toad the wet sprocket.
"Billion dollar babies".....alice cooper.
"Aliens ate my buick"......thomas dolby.
And...
"Lost in space"......aimee mann.
This week.
Well,
Today I am listening to some Johnny Cash, Charlie Walker, and Ernest Tubb from a CD I copied form LP Records.
RUN SOFTLY BLUE RIVER, PICK ME UP ON YOUR WAY DOWN, and I'M WAITING FOR SHIPS THAT NEVER COME IN.
Ray I just read that the government, led by Trump, is going to make CD's illegal.
Well,
Fde, If you buy that Snake Oil, there is no hope for you ! Uh, please post where you read that. I get at least 5 Catalogs for Music. All the time. One from your own state new Jersey.
Sure as bears crap in the woods, cds will be illegal by 2020
All part of Trump wanting to drain the swamp. He says alot of dems are still using cd's and he feels it's not smart and bad for the economy
If I come across the article again, ill post it.
You should start thinking about a switch
I have all of EARL KLUG'S CD's! I listen on a headphone tube amp with my eyes closed--I can almost see the music!

Jason Isbell
Been listening to him for a month or so.
Great writing, great songs.
Just caught him at the St. Augustine Amphitheater last week, great live, any band with 2 great slide players is in my wheelhouse.
Today 21 Jan 2019 I am listening to Snow Country, a CD By Hank Snow. Yesterday I listened to THOSE WONDERFUL YEARS, great Pop music from the 50's.
I wonder if I should change the title from what is in your CD player to something like "what music are you listening to right now?"
I wonder if I should change the title from what is in your CD player to something like "what music are you listening to right now?"
You should, but will Ray lose a kidney over it? LOLLLLLLLLLLL
This is Rays thread, how bout it Ray? Can we step into the future with this thread?
Well,
Um, I suggest going back to the Cylinder no? Golly I just received another Catalog from a CD source. So, you could change the title to WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING TO ON CD OR OTHER DEVICE. I guess it's time to break out my 8-Tracks. Did'ja know before cassettes there were 4-Track cassette players for automobiles. I know, I installed them at one time. Keep on trucking!
There, I just changed a single word and it works for everything and so people search for music will find it much easier in searches. We can always change to something else later if needed.
By the way, aside from JPF members music which I listen to every single day, I also listened to:
Tanita Tikarim's Ancient Heart Album (one I hadn't heard in a decade but one of the songs we used to play live with a beautiful voiced female singer in one of my bands a song call Valentine Heart which we saw her perform on David Letterman back in the day when he was still funny and not just a political hack & Aimee Mann's Whatever Album which is my all time favorite singer songwriter pop album so I pop it in now and then to reset and clear my palate before switching to a new genre of music from the awards.
Aw, Humm, Yes!
This morning I am listening to the Soundtrack from THE YELLOW ROLLS ROYCE. It is from the Movie of the same name. As far as I know they never released it on CD so I made my own a few years ago from an LP Record. Great Music.
I listen to a lot of Clare Bowen and The Avett Brothers!!!
in the Cd Drive listening to The Wallflowers "bringing down the horse"
I dont need the cd any more but i found it laying around, listened to whole thing twice
Humm, Aw, Well,
In some commercial on the T.V. they have been playing an Excerpt of HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS. So I looked thru my Christmas CD's to see if I have the song. Yep I have the song! It is on A CHRISTMAS PORTRAIT CD BY The Carpenters. Wow Karen Carpenter really sounds good. If you don't have the CD, sorry FD you may be able to find it on the Net.
Karen Carpenter was one of the most unique vocalists of our time. I don't have the CD but I would not be without my CD recording and playing gear. I refuse to become reliant on all those playlist gizmos and methods. This is not a rant against those who do... just the quirkiness of an old man who refuses to use a cell phone except for emergency communications when "on the road."
Music (no matter what you enjoy) is the glue that binds us here at JPF. May the force (and Brian) be with you all!
----Dave

New CD by Little Steven & The Disciples of Soul - Summer of Sorcery
Saw most of it on PBS. What great about Little Steven is he dont give a f... he does what he wants to do. Soul, rock, blues, funk, who wants to hear a 5 piece horn section these days? He does it anyway.

Been listening to these guys the last few years. I got to see them at a small theatre in Clearwater, FL a few years back. Probably the best funk party band around right now … Here Come The Mummies. They seemed to have grabbed a spot perpetually in my cd player for two years now …
