Hey, want a free song? Here you go.

I've got a full backing track here, created a while back by myself and Steve Soucy. (The original project is no longer in play, so here's a full instrumental track, just for you.) You get to be the cowriter, lyricist, singer...you name it. If you're a lyricist, maybe you want to team up with a singer and come up with a melody and lyrics to record.

Why? Because it's a JPF song challenge, that's why! It will be fun to see what people come up with. If you want to play, just realize that there will be other versions of this song too...so the point here is not to make money, the point is to have a nice song for yourself, and also to stretch your collaboration muscles by coming up with your best shot at writing a suitable lyric and melody for music that's already composed.

Whoa, that was a really long sentence!

There are no winners and losers here, and no time limit...feel free to record something using this backing track, and post it on this thread so we can hear it. Have fun with it!

Here it is:

Kauf-Kollab Ballad

Okay, let's collaborate...ready, set...GO!

Steve Soucy: Piano, Organs
Mark Kaufman: Guitars, Bass, Drums
Could you tell us when the 1st verse, 2nd verse, chorus, etc. come in? Thanks! smile
Thanks for this, Mark! With the volume around what would be 3 on this Mac, I was able to hear it well enough to do a one-off whisper-like improve blues vocal with some lyrics thrown in! And I even heard imagined harmonies! I haven't heard or done anything musical in over 10 weeks. Although it was all very subdued volume wise, for my obvious and needed reason, it was a unexpected thrill. I found the very cool chord changes fun to move along with melody wise. You should have heard it! Ha!

I can hear me doing this sort of thing once in a while, so all is not lost in music for me, although whisper like. But it really floated my boat as they say. I wish you really knew what I was feeling during that play. I didn't expect to listen to the whole thing. I just started to sing light as soon as it started for some reason, and out it all came as if I heard it before. Cool music and structure! It was made to order I guess.

Thanks for the little creative moment! I owe ya!

Have Some Fun
words by C. Stewart - music by M. Kaufman/Steve Soucy
( May 21, 2010 )

Three midgets and a bum
Wonder where they came from
All screwed up in a little town
They got too high and fell down

Three midgets and a bum
They know how to have some fun
They know how to have some fun

Three didgets and a thumb
Her kisses taste like rum
All tied up in a little bed
A$$ cheeks were blood red

Three didgets and a thumb
She knows how to have some fun
She knows how to have some fun

Bridge...
Fun is the name of the game
It's ok to go insane

Do you know how to have some fun
Hope you get to have some fun
Come with me and have some fun

Weeee! Three fingers full of fun. Very Floydian, Calvin! Love it. laugh

Your Eyes Are Reflecting 2010 Joice Marie M. Kaufman/Steve Soucy

Whenever the sun shines
it's pale compared to you
Even a billion stars
cannot sparkle as you do

If I have reason to smile
it's 'cause you love me too

and I wake up
every day
knowing now you're
here to stay
I see hope in everything
that your eyes are reflecting

Instrumental

When I see bluebirds fly
They flock near to you
Sharing the brilliant shade
Of sky blue as your eyes do

If they have reason to sing
it's 'cause you are in view

and I wake up
every day
knowing now you're
here to stay
I see hope in everything
that your eyes are reflecting

Because we came together
faith and peace share my forever

and I wake up
every day
knowing now you're
here to stay
I see hope in everything
that your eyes are reflecting

Joice! Really nice! smile

Can you send me a file of just your voice soloed out on this? I wanna sing with you!

I'll PM my email to ya...
I'll give it a shot. I'm not a lyricist, nor a vocalist, so it may push the boundaries.

cheers, niteshift

Can't wait to hear it !!! ; ) yipeee

Creepy Crawly Demons

[v1]
Someone's hiding under my bed
No one will believe me
I hear creepy sounds
When I close my eyes
From the deadly screaming banshee

[Rise]
I thought I would feel better
Hiding behind the sheet
Still I see the shadow
Hear the eerie sound

[ch]
Creepy crawly demons
Living beneath my bed
Creepy crawly demons
Floating through my head
Creepy crawly demons
Evil fraternity
Creepy crawly demons
Wait for eternity

[v2]
Won't you come and sleep with me
And keep me company
I'll feel much safer
Lying next to you
Away from the screaming banshee

[Rise]
I thought I would feel better
Hiding behind the sheet
Still I see the shadow
Hear the eerie sound

ch]
Creepy crawly demons
Living beneath my bed
Creepy crawly demons
Floating through my head
Creepy crawly demons
Evil fraternity
Creepy crawly demons
Wait for eternity

[br]
Red glowing eyes staring at me
Sounding like two cats in heat

[ch]
Creepy crawly demons
Living beneath my bed
Creepy crawly demons
Floating through my head
Creepy crawly demons
Evil fraternity
Creepy crawly demons
Wait for eternity

[Outro]
I won't be drinking any more
Love it, Rick! Sing it! laugh And Glynda, go for it!

Not That Man

The leaves are fallin' down
The wind's blowin' em' round and round
I feel the chill of fall in the air
I look up, to see you standing there

This was our favorite time of year
Saying your name use to bring my tears
We need to talk, come on in, sit here by me
Time to set my heart free

You're not the man I fell in love with
He wouldn't hurt me this a way
Where is that man
I need that man
Why did he go away
Made up only in my heart
The way I needed you to be
Looking at you it's sad to say
You're Not that man
No, you're Not that man

We can't bring back the past
Some ole' memories seem to last
I had to forget, once you were gone
Had to let it go, move on

Never in my mind did I think i'd feel
Your love was never real
One more time I look into your eyes
Again I listen to your lies

Bridge:
I clutch my chest, hold my heart
My head starts to spin
Feel sick inside, my knees go weak
Like it was yesterday, the pain begins
How could I been so blind........

You're NOT the man I fell in love with
HE wouldn't hurt me this a way
Where is THAT man
I NEED that man
Why did he go away
Made up only in my heart
The way I needed you to be
Lookin' at you it's sad to say
You're Not That Man
No, You're Not That Man

I always thought, if I could see you one more time, my heart would melt, I wouldn't let you walk away..

You're NOT the man I fell in love with
He wouldn't hurt me this a way
WHERE IS THAT MAN
I NEED THAT MAN
WHY DID HE HAVE TO GO AWAY
MADE UP ONLY IN MY HEART
THE WAY I NEEDED YOU TO BE
LOOKIN' AT YOU IT'S SAD TO SAY

....YOU'RE NOT THAT MAN

YOU'LL NEVER BE THAT MAN

AND I'M ASKING YOU TO LEAVE.............

Side Car Johnny And Canada Red
words by C. Stewart - music by M. Kaufman/Steve Soucy ( May 26, 2010 )

Verse 1
Shaky Side Car Johnny
And ol' Canada Red
Smokin' on a fat one
In an old rusty shed

Canada's one big grin
Loving the state he's in
He's Side Car Johnny's twin

Verse 2
The cold and brutal wind
That faced them yesterday
Can't compare with sunshine
But they still get blowed away

Loving the state they're in
Look at Canada's grin
He's Side Car Johnny's twin

BRIDGE...
Six months here and six months there
Purple smoke rings in the air

Loving the state they're in
Look at Canada's grin
He's Side Car Johnny's twin

Nowhere to go Just hangin' out
Doing the white boy Jump and shout

Like You Do 2010 Joice Marie /Mark Kaufman/Steve Soucy

you never let me down through all the sadness I had
always so strong
watching out for me too

and never did you ask a single thing in return
gave your help
free as good friends do

you kept your secret passion inside
as you were there for me - shared with me - and you knew

th-at ..I
would fall in love , so in love ,with you
and I ,would never find
someone who cares
like you do

Instrumental

you could never be the kind of man to tear love down
waiting aside
while the tables turned around

Though lonely you would only walk along keeping
your quiet heart
hiding the truth underground

you kept your secret passion inside
as you were there for me - shared with me - and you knew

th-at ..I
would fall in love , so in love ,with you
and I ,would never find
someone who cares
like you do

when he left me so cold and alone
you warmth came shining right through

and..I
just fell in love , so in love ,with you
and I ,will never find
someone who cares
like you do

Hey All,

Ok, here's my short take, just one verse and chorus.

Now, BE KIND and don't go dissing the semi-lyricist/non-vocalist Ok ? LOL We're all in this together right ? eek

Shadows At The Wall

Shadows At The Wall Kaufman/Soucy/Wood 2010

Remember just a little while ago
When days were long, and the river flowed
And the sunset never ends.
Wed sit and talk just for awhile, I loved your smile
In a way that youd never know, and your love would never bend

And still, the changes can be heard
And life becomes absurd
To the memory

And we throw shadows at the wall
Not knowing where theyre going to fall
And lie between us
And so its now or never, to live this love forever dear
Just draw me near, please just draw me near.

cheers, niteshift

( copied to the mp3 board for any comments )
Weeee! I like the new one, Joice! Can't wait to hear yours, Glyn! And anytime we can get Geoff to sing, it's a special day. I dig it, Nite!
Hehehehe......you can hear why grin Not often you'll drag me in front of a mic. Yep, it's all about getting out of the box, and giving something a try. Pushing the weak points, to make them stronger.

I'd never try to do it for real, working with brilliant vocalists, but to extend is to learn. If I need a vocalist to change a melody line, I'll play it for them on a piano, for obvious reasons.

It's great to see such variety, and musical interpretation of a backing track. No-one can say the backing is dull. Quite the opposite, and at points is very difficult to put in a suitable melody line and phrasing.

As one who starts with a melody line or riff, then builds up from the bottom, it's a real reverse of what's usual to me.

Hope you get some more takers Mark. It's a really great bed track in itself, PLENTY of variation.

Ok, you've heard me wailing. Who's up next ?

cheers, niteshift

ok my song's posted above....and be nice...i'm old thanks glyn
Nice one, Glyn! It's so great to hear all these different approaches! smile

Nite, the track IS challenging, even though if feels pretty straightforward...this was music I wrote to an existing lyric a while back, and since the lyric was pretty long and complex, the music meanders to a lot of places before it comes back around. The original song was pretty good, but it really wasn't quite the right fit, and the lyric was recently re-musicated by another composer. One of these days I'll try to write a fresh lyric for my old melody and post it on this thread.

Thanks for playing with it, everyone! Hope you're having some fun and learning stuff about the music and recording side of things. smile
Hey Mark,

I could not come up with any lyrics that fit so have posted Stratonoodle in another thread!

Colin
What a lot of awesome songs--and other threads too! Feel free to keep 'em coming, and some time this summer I'll put up something that already has a melody, for all you lyricists out there.

A lot of people have been asking me to post the first version of this one, so here it is, a collab with Robert: http://soundclick.com/share?songid=7136374 We came to a mutual agreement that it wasn't quite right for pitching, freeing it up for the challenge. smile

Thanks again to everyone for playing along, and I hope you got a taste of how a lot of us write lyrics--which is after the music has been written. Hope to hear more!
