Jim sent me the lyrics of a melody he already had in his head. I almost begged him to let me do my own version. I love the old west songs. Anyway, this is my version (lyrics changed slightly). Maybe it's too slow but I cant seem to do it faster. Maybe I should try harder. Hey Vic,
How many smokes have you had and how much whiskey was involved with this one ? The voice is magic !
Couple of small nits in the bv's, I think they're a bit out of tune, so perhaps leave them out for the minute. Not that real low note though, that's a real classic.
Oh, it just flicked to "When My Boat Comes In", a great tune also.
Keep gargling with the gravel Vic, because that's one heck of a vocal you've got.
cheers, niteshift

Bravo Vic!!! I was disappointed I couldn't get the SoundCloud link to work, then saw the other one for SoundClick and it worked. I'm very glad it did. It took me straight to the desert plains of Texas near the Southern border. Great story telling and the music gives it just the right atmosphere. You could speed it up some if you wish but it works for me now. Maybe make a unique copy and speed that up and see what works best. Very nice, my friend.

Hi Niteshift, It's all mis-spent youth. I checked on the bv's and there was a couple of wrong harmony notes in the upper register. I changed them now so sounds better(I hope) but it is quiet a strain for me to sing that high. Thanks for the encouraging comments. Vic

Hi Vic. Well you got me in the mood for an old Western with this song. Nice job--the tempo is perfect for this lonely despairing song. I would also be curious to hear at the last chorus tag a pause after Laredo, then singing that line down rather than up like the previous two times--for sadness and summary.
Perfect voice for this song, good job!

What a Great Western Sad-One!

Great vocal for this "classic" country tune. Maybe a trifle slow, but it's OK. "Bad Lands" -- hmmm, it really is a term in American history that brings to mind a general location. The Bad Lands are more commonly thought of as being in the dakotas, wyoming and those areas. I have never heard of Mexico being referred as one of the "bad lands". Minor point -- maybe he did head north istead of south and I am missing it.

Vic, I like this ending better, it's kind a "sad & lonely" ending, but that was the life of a fugitive in those times.
In my mind I was hearing it "slightly" different, NOT to say it is better:
(Last Laredo) Gbm G A (no harmony at end-alone & pensively) Laredo,Laredo-o-o, (pause) don't you cry, (pause) for me.
I say let's bring back the Westerns! steady-eddie.

It seems to me that the tempo is just right for the mood of the song. I did feel like it took a little too long to get to any kind of melodic change however, and my ears were looking for some kind of melodic lift right about where the second verse started. Do you think it would be more effective if you sandwiched the lines in the chorus, moving your last line to the middle, and ending the chorus with the hook? Kurt

Kevin. Thanks for lending an ear. You're right that the popular location of the "Badlands" are where you say they are. In the song's meaning they are anywhere that is rough and lawless. The word "badlands" seemed appropriate and colourful. The man is on the run so that could take him anywhere and everywhere though. Even up north. Vic

Hi Kurt. I appreciate you looking at this. I'll have a think about that "melodic change". Maybe a guitar riff or a break in rhythm, hmmm. Your other suggestion "if you sandwiched the lines in the chorus, moving your last line to the middle, and ending the chorus with the hook?" was how it was originally written by Jim. I changed it round because I didn't think it worked rhythmically or melodically. That could be just my own personal taste though. Thanks for the comments. Vic

Vic, First off, Love your voice! Cash LIVES! I really like this tune. IMHO, I would go strait into the chorus between the first and second verse. It just seems like it wants to go there. You could even sing: "Laredo ----- Laredo don't you cry for me. So Laredo----don't you cry for me." Then enter the second verse and sing the entire chorus as you have it now at the conclusion of the second verse. OR you could save the hangin tree until the end of the last chorus for a little more jarring effect. I love the line about the hangin' tree! I'm originally from Oklahoma so I really like your kind of music V/R -Steve

Hi Steve. Thank you very much for your interest and comment. I see what you're saying and I have already considered a chorus after the second verse. The thing is that at the moment it is 4 minutes long. That would add another 15 secs or so. I am tempted though. Vic

Hey guys, missed this the first time around somehow. Another super western ballad but I have a slight problem. You're heading for Mexico but the Badlands are in South Dakota, the opposite direction? Maybe you're headed for Nogales or some other 2 sylable town? I really enjoyed this!! :)))) scotty

The word "Badlands", non historically, is also described as wastelands. Kevin already raised that issue so I cut and paste my reply below. Kevin. Thanks for lending an ear. Vic, yeah I understand that "badlands" can generally refer to any wasteland or barren spot I was just saying that in the context of "American" western ballads, the Badlands are in South Dakota, all the bad guys headed there or most of them anyway! :)) Not a big problem was just saying what popped into my head when I heard that line, confused me. Great song!! :)))) scotty
