Hello everyone,

I was wondering if anyone here can recommend any great music business books that are up to date with all that is happening in music today?

I use to buy so many of them and I haven't bought any in years, I already own John Branney's classic music books any other great ones out there?-Dana

Jason Blume's book was good but it is now dated.

I depends what you want to get out of it. If you own Braheny and Blume, you have all the basics and songwriting tips you need. The industry stuff updates a little each year, but that has nothing to do with writing a quality song or how a song works etc.

The business part is separate from the creation/creative/artistic part. If you have questions about the business part, no book can ever be up to date since it changes nearly every day.

I will be happy to answer your missing questions?

Brian

Hi Brian,

You right on point, I think what I'm looking for is a combination of both...
I'm feel I'm at a point where I am writing some of my strongest songs ever and feel they are on point for the market and want to know what to expect since the game has changed since I last purchased those said books.

I went to Barnes and Noble the other day to search for a book that would inspire and also guide me in today's market but left a little disappointed in the selection.

I started reading "How Music Works" by David Byrne but it wasn't want I expected.

I think I was looking to recapture that innocent part of me when I was naive about the world of music and was so excited by anything that might help me getting a little closer to my dream
So I'm probably not being fair about the "How Music Works"
I should say I just skimmed through it:)

I will say that I am more excited about my level of growth of my writing and looking forward to getting some new demos done and want to find some great books to carry that momentum forward:)

So If I had to pick one or the other it would be the creative artistic part but with an angle geared more for the Commercial Market.

Thanks for your help Brian, it sounds like you are having a great time in Paris? I hope you are!-Dana

The only Book I have bought that deals with the Music Business is ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE MUSIC BUSINESS by Donald S. Passman. It really deals more on the Artist Side than the Songwriter side so I wouldn't necessarly recommend it for the Song Writer. The Songwriter's Market, published yearly in October or November has lots of basic information for the songwriter as well as places you can send your songs for consideration. The last one I bought was in 2007.

Aw Yes. Speaking of Paris there is a News Story in the Morning Paper where the French want to keep American Wines out of the EU Market. And so it goes. Just think. you get tidbits of news here you may miss somewhere else!

if you know a little bit about the history of wine making there was the Great French Wine Blight (phylloxera) in the mid 19th century.

Quote
"Eventually, following Jules-Emile Planchon's discovery of the Phylloxera as the cause of the blight, and Charles Valentine Riley's confirmation of Planchon's theory, Leo Laliman and Gaston Bazille, two French wine growers, proposed that the European vines be grafted to the resistant American rootstock that were not susceptible to the Phylloxera. While many of the French wine growers disliked this idea, many found themselves with no other option. The method proved to be an effective remedy. The following "Reconstitution" (as it was termed) of the many vineyards that had been lost was a slow process, but eventually the wine industry in France was able to return to relative normality."

from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_French_Wine_Blight

So in short, French wines are from American stock. American grapes saved the French Wine industry around 150 years ago so it seems ironic & ungrateful that the French want to block American Wines from the EU market, but not surprising.

Hey Guys,

I just re-ordered a used copy of one the best Music Business Books!
I could not for the life of me remember what the Author's name was and it just hit me ten minutes ago!

The Title is "Everything you'd better know about the Record Industry"
It is an older book, but one I found to understand so many complicated things about Songwriting and Contracts-Publishing ect.

I'm really looking forward to re-reading it, I learned a great deal from it.
The Author's name is Kashif.He is a Writer/Producer
Who has worked with many big names in the Industry such as Whitney Houston-Kenny G-Al Jarreau-Dionne Warwick ect.-Dana
