This morning as we speak, I am listening to a compliation of Hank Thompson songs. THE NEW GREEN LIGHT, THE BLACKBOARD OF MY HEART, SQUAWS ALONG THE YUKON, etc. Hank was a great one.

Have you heard that other disc that I posted yesterday -- Copyright? They're a Vancouver band formed from the ashes of a punk band called Slow. First 2 albums are flat-out great. Hard sound to describe, but really cool. Kinda post-grunge, or something. My selections today:

JPF Mentor and one of my best friends Harold Payne co-wrote every songs (he wrote the lyrics) of the new Bobby Womack album Bravest Man In The World which is being called one of the most important Soul records in history. It's old school soul meets sparse British Electronica. He wrote the songs with the guy from Blur and the Gorillaz and the producer of Adele. People think it might go as far as a nomination for Album of the Year in the Grammys. It's very different and requires an open mind. Read the rave reviews on Amazon or read this review: http://beatsperminute.com/reviews/album-review-bobby-womack-the-bravest-man-in-the-universe/Bobby was just inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009. Interesting replies and topic, Ray:
For me, it's all over the map. Rachmaninoff, Alison Krauss, The Beatles, Martin Denny, Jack Jones, Duke Ellington, Brubeck, George Strait, Don Williams, Willie Nelson, Hank Williams, Sr., Wilson Phillips and the list goes on.
Most of the CDs in my player with the big speakers are my own. When nobody is home, I sit quietly and try to figure out how I'd re-record a line or phrase or change the melody if I ever do the song again. It's not self-worship 'cause I really don't care much for my vocals. When all is said and done, I'm only attempting to be a songwriter... not an artist or performer. Self improvement is my objective. Too bad it isn't working... LOL!

This guys music continues to kick my ass. Pick an album, pick song, anyone will do. Amazing. You can hear every influence on him in all his music. Dylan, Beatles, Stones, Ramones, The Clash, Cheap Trick, Springsteen, Folkies, Blues. Saw an article about him entitled "chanelling Woodie Guthrie through Joey Ramone. http://itunes.apple.com/us/artist/willie-nile/id903680
