Danny asked me to write a melody for his lyrics so this is what I came up with. Not sure what genre it should be in though. I get very confused about genres. Maybe one of you good folk can pin a label on it. http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=11716483The Straight And Narrow V1 I've always been a rebel Never cared much for authority If the playing field was level I tipped it in a way that suited me But this road I'm on is rocky Getting steeper every minute as I climb The lessons life has taught me Have started to weigh heavy on my mind Ch Now I'll walk the straight and narrow every day and night I'll keep listening for the echo of your voice to keep me right Just like a soaring arrow I'll come out of the blue I'll walk the straight and narrow ... all the way to you V2 Now, I'm no social climber But I've had my eye fixed on the prize Then I saw something finer And reached out for the chance to make you mine I tried to be your hero But couldn't make it past the right and wrong Now I'm left with less than zero As I try to find the strength to to carry on Ch Now I'll walk the straight and narrow every day and night I'll keep listening for the echo of your voice to keep me right Just like a soaring arrow I'll come out of the blue I'll walk the straight and narrow ... all the way to you INST. I would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank Vic for all of his time and hard work on this song. I think he did a masterful job of taking some two dimensional scribblings on a screen and making them come to life. Vic, you are a very talented man. Without people like you, those of us who don't play or sing so well would not have a voice and our songs would stay in our hearts.
Thank you vey much, Danny

DANNY AND VIC--
YOU HAVE A VERY FINE SONG HERE--A DUAN EDDY GUITAR WITH JOHNNY (VIC) CASH ON THE VOX--I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT THE DIRECTION--
I THINK AN IMPROVEMENT OF THE MELODY AND PHRASING IN THE CH COULD TAKE IT TO A NEW LEVEL, DRIVING THE SONG HOME--
GREAT WORK YOU TWO--

Danny, I love to do this. As a painter I love a blank canvas but it needs the idea to start. You had the idea and the lyrics. I just filled in the blanks. It could be done in so many ways and this is just my interpretation. Vic

HiYa Vic & Danny!
This IS one damn Beautiful, Powerful Song Ya have here!
I've got one line of it I'd Sug messin'-with; here's why:
Ya mention Singer's "Less than Zero" 'cuz he's Lost Her.
So..Last CH line should indicate "..'TILL IT LEADS ME BACK to you".
(Or, just add the word "BACK" to what's there: "..all the way BACK to you".)
That's all I got to offer. You got Yas a Winner here, IMHO. KOS, & Good Luck with a Fine One, Gents!!!
Best Wishes & Big /Guys-Hugs, Stan

not sure about the genre. Kindof reminds me of Cash.

Hi Calvin,
Yes, Vic did a great job with the melody and the music. Thanks for the kudos on the lyric. Vic added to the lyric with some subtle changes and beefing up the chorus. I think he is a bit humble saying that the lyric is all mine. His contribution to the lyrics may not have been much, quantity wise, but the quality of those changes is a whole different story.
Thanks for giving us a listen, Danny

VIC--
I WAS THE ONE WHO PUT 5 STARS ON THIS ONE--THIS COULD BE A GREAT SONG: I THINK THE CH NEEDS A LITTLE MORE DETERMINATION, COULD BE A VOLUME INCREASE WOULD DO THIS-- AND POSSIBLY LET THE 3RD LINE SOAR UP A LITTLE MORE IN MELODY AND THEN BACK DOWN--JUST SOME THOUGHTS AFTER LISTENING SEVERAL TIMES--
ANY WAY, I LOVE THE SONG!

Hey Stan,
Glad to see you stopped in and gave this one a spin. Double happy that you like it so much. Vic did a fantastic job with the arrangement, production, vocals... wait, he did it all 'cept the write and he tweaked a few spots in there. He is an artist and a very good one at that.
Thanks, Danny

Very nice feel and match of music and lyric, Vic. Well done. You've really captured the mood of the song.
Few points. I loved the opening riff. If there's tremolo on it I'd make it even more pronounced. You did the opening riff 2 different ways. I like (and would stick to one regardless) the 2nd time around in the beginning. You stayed on the low notes more and that gave the riff more of a defined feel rather than a loose feel. I would have also liked to hear those low notes repeated after lines 2/4 in the verses as there's a lot of space there and something more unified would sit better, in my ears anyway.
I thought it got a little busy with solo notes near the end of the verses...would rather have heard single strum chord accents maybe w/tremolo.
Chorus lifted like it should...really minor nits from a guitar player--overall real nice work.
Zeek

Really dig this - the lyric, guitar tone, and the harmony in the chorus give it a Springsteen vibe to me. Great job, Vic, on a nicely written lyric by Danny. Still trying to get something close to that guitar tone of yours Scott

Vic, I am still glad to have the opportunity to hear music and voice to one of my gender specific (male) lyrics. The only voice any of them have had is mine, sans music. I love the interpretation and am very happy you decided to give it a shot. Speaking of genre how about Contemorary folk pop country rock! Thank you, Danny

Absolutely awesome. Really good song guys. I thought it was very moving. Good job with the instruments too, though I think it would be a great song stripped down to a lonely guitar and vocalist as well.
This song captures one of the great themes: Hope and perseverance mingled with sadness or regret.
This one will warrant multiple listens.
Thanks for creating,
Mike D.

I've listened to this several times. I love the chorus! I could not hear anything that really stood out to the ear, music-performance wise. I think it has a classic country vibe. In terms of the lyric/story, I believe the singer has lost his love interest and vows to get her back? I had a thought that perhaps at the end it should be sung as "I'll walk the straight and narrow all the way back to you" or something like that? Just something to emphasize the determination a little more.
That's all I got! Very nice collab you guys.

Hi Ben. Thank you for the kind comments. Now I'm more confused. I read somewhere that the genre Americana was for songs about American things. This song doesn't attach itself to any country by mentioning a city or a way of life, like making moonshine or playing baseball. Is it in the style of playing? I wish I could work it out. When you upload a song to Soundclick it asks for the genre. So if you put country you then have to decide whether it's traditional, contemporary or general. What is general? I can't take no more!!!!!! We're all gonna die here!!!!! Vic

Hi Vic and Danny, Danny, I think this is a very good lyric. You've got some cool lines in here like these. If the playing field was level I tipped it in a way that suited me Vic, I love what you've done with this lyric and I can't imagine it any other way. Of course you sound great like always! Dottie

Vic, Of course I'm hedging my bets. That's what a gambling man does! I am glad you took the chance because it definitely works for me. I also hope that it works as well for you. Every song that I am a part of, that has music, is special to me as there aren't that many. As you know, I have co-written a few with Tammy and she has done a few of mine that need a femal vox. I am happy that this one turned out as well as it has.
