Ok, if you're too serious about your song writing, it's time to switch off and go do the gardening..... If you're still here, and haven't seen the one of two songs which are up for the Oscar Song of the Year.... then have a look at this.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-WWWTW1P8rQIt absolutely breaks all the rules of song writing. If it were a pitch song for a major film, you would bring out the sick bags before the presentation. But it works ! Why ? Because the songwriter knows all the rules and blatently violates them at every turn. It's a truely beautiful song in it's own context. I love it when the industry just turns upon itself. Magic ! And good luck to Bret McKenzie on Oscar night. cheers, niteshift PS - I'm not going to put up the other contender, as I'm a Kiwi myself, and am a little biased. PPS - if you happen to be an Academy voting memeber, you better vote for this one, otherwise I will... umm..... not allow you to indulge in the passtime of pleasuring sheep any longer.

i didn't get that it was a serious song about anything... it was movie filler dialogue posing as a musical interlude... reaching to some "meaning" that never made it. seriously or humorously. total wiffing of the hollywood vapor. total crap, but definitely hollywood gold. personally, i could have used that time to pleasure some sheep! rock on, r.

HAAAAAA ! Richard, so you actually got it ? Every musical and Hollywood cliche was used, and then turned upon it's head. It's the industry laughing at itself, not in a cruel way, but kind of a in house joke. To me ?, it's just so naff and so wrong, that it actually works. I think it's a great example of creativity, where you know the whole world is watching, so like a naughty school boy, you drop your pants and give the finger at the same time. It's a great example of ridding the industry of people who take themselves too seriously. Or not...... Write on ! cheers, niteshift

Interesting in that it brings back memories of spending a vacation trip in the company of Carroll Spinney who plays/played(?) Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch.....a very interesting guy. The song reminds me of some very old musicals which often had songs without the structures we know and love. I also learned some interesting things about Richard. personally, i could have used that time to pleasure some sheep! rock on, r.

I loved that movie. And that song was one of the best parts of it. Simply because is was so wrong. Love. It.

Hi Geoff:
Rules? What rules? There are no rules! Hey, it may have been "filler" but it had a message and a melody... and it certainly tugged at my ancient heartstrings.
Wrong? What wrong? In today's idiotic world, there is no wrong is there? Lady Ga Ga, Madonna, Tiny Tim. Now there's a crowd inviting you to go pleasure a sheep... LOL! (Just an old geezer's opinion!)
Thanks for posting it. I probably would have never seen it 'cause my remote is itchier than Matt Dillon's trigger finger.
Have a great day, guys and gals.
