Hello folks
Hope this post finds all in Good Sprites.

Here a song I'm working on for that surposed album of mine. frown

Leave It All Behind

At this rate I'll have to change the title from "Walk With Me" to Where did everybody go?. smile

Well, the music consist of a simple picking pattern, with some piano sprinkled throughout.
I'm still having a blast.
Suggestions welcomed
A good day to all.

Good Morning Mr Nelson

It's ALWAYS a pleasure to hear you sing.... : ) --- I like the story line and the arrangement -- but maybe those pauses need to be ? half as many ? something ... it make me notice that the vocal melodic phrases are the same - which I don't think I would notice as much.

If you are using an electric keyboard -- check the tuning if you redo -- it could be the playback of the download on my end, though.......

Anyway -- I'm sorry to hear you had a sprained wrist --- I hope it is healing quickly !!

Best regards
Jm

I like the song a lot, but to be blunt, the pauses are killing the flow, and the keys are a bit distracting. This will be a great american folk song when you get the right production on it.

Congrats

I like it a lot, Nelson. Your voice sounds great on this and the lyric has a ton of great imagery in it.

I might even love it. But it's a rainy day today and it made me sad. smile

I thought it was interesting that "she" rather than "he" was grateful for finding the other. Put a more complex spin on things than is typical - which appealed to me.

Morning Joice
Thanks for stopping by to lend an ear and suggestions.

I always get these unusual ideas. I think half the fun for me is trying to work them successfully into the song. I have my hands full on this one.
My wrist is still a mess but at least I can play, though still in pain.
As for that keyboard, it's time for a new one.
It often injects strange anomalies into my recordings.
I've been telling myself to wait tell I learn to play before I invest in one but I need quality sounds now.

Thanks again.

Thanks for the bluntness Rob.
To be other wise would be useless to me.
It's been an interesting journey with this song, so far.
I'm very excited by the ideas running through the usually cavernous space between my ears.

I'll work on those distraction, you mentioned.

Thanks for stopping by.

Hey Scott
First congrats on all the great things you've been up to.
10,000 downloads, Your song played at the Phillie's games.
Doesn't surprise me a bit. I personally find your talents inspiring.

OK, Sorry it made you sad, my friend. cry

I plan to screw with folks senses with this one.
Like uncomfortable pauses in the pre chorus and up lifting music in the chorus , when the lyrics are actually saying, No matter how good it is here, I'm going to break your heart and move on in search of ...?
As for the He and she twist, While writing the story out, I found myself naturally leaning toward a story being about a guy always leaving but then thought it would be a sweet twist to have it happen to him in the 2nd verse. Just when he thought he had the Open Road licked., she has the last laugh.

Thanks again for stopping by.

Nelson...

Love your voice on this...the grit works perfectly! Nice lyric...I, too, think a few of the pasues could disappeart. But, I don't see them as song killers...just a wee bit distracting at tmes. Nonetheless...a gfreat listen...thanks!

Nelson,

I am just so happy to hear your voice, it has been too long.

I hope you are taking care of yourself and wrist...and... I can't wait to get this cd my friend!!

I really like this song and story and agree with Joice that you don't have to take the pauses all out, but if you reduce them, you will make them more powerful in what they emphasize.

My i-pod needs some Nelson..and this song just furthers the anticipation......

Hey Nelson,

Thanks for the listen mate, I really enjoyed the tune.

Real natural, and a song which can rasily take any direction.

It's an albulm song ? I'd ramp it up, maybe after the first chorus, then drop it down to the basics. This is a song which has great potential ( musically ) to a producer of any genre.

Nice songwriting.

cheers, niteshift

MISTER NELSON--

Good to hear you tickling the keys again--Isn't it wonderful to have an original piece of music written by thy own hand to add to your CD--WHEN FINISHED, it could BE that one GREAT SONG YOU'RE LOOKING FOR!

PAUSES ARE OK, AS LONG AS THEY DON'T DISTRACT FROM THE PIECE--SOME GET ON ME FOR PAUSES IN MY SONGS--BUT IF THERE'S A REASON, I SAY IT'S OK.

YOU HAVE TO SATISFY YOURSELF AS WELL.

Write and PLAY ON!

Holy Cow... I have to copy-cat that one!!

This was incredible!! While I was there, just had to listen to them all.... and loved every single minute!!!!! smile

This song in particular just gripped me and held me... they might have been about to leave it all behind, but I wasn't going ANYWHERE, my friend! Maybe it was just me... but the pauses worked for me... gave me time to reflect AND gear up for what was coming!
Bravo... I absolutely love this song!!! smile

O.k. now that I've let this song marinate inside me, I just gotta say how awesome it is. Nelson, your words and voice are captivating. Only a guy who's been around the block a few times could write and express stuff like this. A choir boy couldn't do it. You gotta breath a little diesel smoke - eat a little dust - and get the boots laid to you a few times... then that character comes a shining on through. You sound like a man who's been around the block, in a good, Merle Haggard type of way.

There is so much honesty in your words. And your voice is as genuine as they come. Cuts clear to the bone.

Give me the heads-up when your record is ready. Put me down for a copy, for sure!

Yes it is a wonderful feeling, Mackie.
Never in a million years would I have guess, that I would write lyrics, let alone try composing. It's so exciting.

I understand what folks are saying about the pauses but there's no doubt that I feel the same as you do. I have to get the arrangement just perfect, for it to be truly successful.

I always write to satisfy myself.
I share my work to confirm my belief that I can create music that folks will enjoy listening to as much as I enjoy creating it.
Mackie, I honestly want to thank you for always being so...so...
I don't know. Lets just say a few kind words from a few folks keeps me moving forward.
And you are one.
So thanks.

Hey Jen
Thank you so much for the visit. It is truly appreciated.

As for this song your response is exactly what I was going for.
Honestly, that's exactly how it makes me feel when I haven't heard it in a while. That's OH So Satisfying.
I have a lot of work to do technically but I know it's emotional path and foundation is true and solid.
For that I thank you.

You sound like a man who's been around the block, in a good, Merle Haggard type of way.

There is so much honesty in your words. And your voice is as genuine as they come. Cuts clear to the bone.

Give me the heads-up when your record is ready. Put me down for a copy, for sure!

HaHaHa...You're killing me, Man.
I'm always excited to hear your thoughts. You're like my own personal guru of all things musical. smile

I don't know if I've been around the block as much as I've just decided to slow down and listen for my own voice. Nothing I write is autobiographical but I am in everything I write.

I hope that makes sense to you.

Early on I came to the realization that I was going to become neither a musical nor vocal virtuoso, so either quit or get serious. My only option was to dig deep and starting writing songs that not only appealed to me but songs that really moved me and if it didn't, then rewrite it until I did.

It's always a thrill, to hear from you.

Thanks you, Sincerely.

PS. I'm beginning to feel that CD is a figment of my imagination. confused But I continue to write.

Nelson,

GREAT SONG. Really like the delivery and the lyrics are great. The pauses throw me a bit. Maybe it's because there are too many of them in a row. I like pauses a lot and probably use too many of them myself OR what if you pause with the vocal but keep the music going somehow? I think that might help imo. It just feels clumsy to me for lack of a better term. Good job on the rest of it though!

Love when you come in with harmony and the chorus is sweet!

Hi Nelson,

I enjoyed this song a lot. The pauses didn’t bother me. They gave me time to think about the story. And they add a real nice element to it…silence speaks volumes, ya know? Great vocal and love those harmonies!

Kristi

Hey Ricky
Well, clumsy is as good a term as any. smile
I'm running the arrangement around in my head and I've considered letting the music continue doing the pauses, in the pre chorus. While this would be a lot easier to pull off, it wouldn't provide the pay off, I'm looking for. I'll just have to put in the work to get what I hear in my head, successfully, into the arrangement. To smooth out the clumsiness, you might say. smile

Hey, thanks for your time and the ear.

Hello Kristi
So pleased you enjoyed the song.
That's exactly what the pauses are there for.
To give the listener time to reflect.

I couldn't agree with you more, that Silence, in the midst of high emotions, Can Speak Volumes.

Lots of work to do here but I'm very excited.

Thank for stopping by.

WEll, I have to disagree with a few others about the pauses. For me, the pauses set up perfect emphasis for the bridge. I think the pauses are brilliant. I love it when and artist plays with tempo and volume. It brings out emotions. Shows the human side. It sounds like real, live music to me, and I just love it.

Love the sound of the ice tea on the rocks... under the oak tree... fresh cut grass -- OMG! Just pure Americana.

Leave It All Behind knocks my composing hat in the creek. I'm just a listener in the crowd now. Mr. Nelson... the stage is yours, my friend. I applaud you & your song.

I just love it.

Well, Kevin
As always, thanks for taking the time to add to the discussion of my music.

About your comment, all I can say is WOW!!!... You really got it. When I wrote the second verse I wanted it to have that rapid fire of imagery, as you mentioned.
Though critique are mostly technical it's is so rewarding when someone feels the urge to point out the artistry of the song and how it affects them.

That ultimately tells me, though I may not be technically there yet, the song's path and foundation are both straight and true.
So, Thanks again.
