I wrote this a while back but wanted to share it for Fathers Day, with a little trimming and more rhyming could make a great little song, thanks glyn

The One You Never Knew

Don't really know what to say
So guess i'll just talk straight from my heart
I wanted to come and talk to you
Especially today, did'nt think I would cry
But the tears are beginning to start

I've driven by here many times
But never had the courage to get out.
You know standing here looking down
At the head of your grave
Looking at your name engraved there in stone
Never knew they called you "Sonny"

In a way, I feel i'm standing on some kind
Of sacred stomping ground
and maybe I'm somewhere I don't belong
Oh well, here I am and I won't be scared off now

I guess there's alot I don't know about you
I do wish I'd had the chance to have seen for myself
What My Daddy was made of, but this I'LL NEVER KNOW
You came to a ball game of mine when I was sixteen
you asked the coach which one was me
I heard you say "you're the best or you're nothing at all

Little did you know I was the captain of the team

Seems so lonely here
I don't like that for you
But I guess thats how it is
nothing anyone can do..
Feels as if someone is watching me
I pray in my heart it is you


What was it that made mama fall in love with you
And why did you leave before I was even born
Did you not even love me then...
Was I the reason this marriage
Came to an end?

I saw you once at a rodeo just outside of town
You were riding on a big black horse
I asked you if I could ride with you
And you told me you didn't have time
you really let me down
But this memory of you i'll always remember

You were such a tall good looking man
With light green eyes that you could see ten feet away
And coal black hair, olive colored skin
When I think about it, yeah..
I can SEE why mama fell for you..

You remarried and had two more daughters
you never came to see me but twice that I remember
Till I was grown and had a family of my own
Wish you could have loved me, like I heard
you did the other two

Well, i'm not here to relive the past
I'm here cause after all You Are My Dad
and I want you to know a few things about me
I think you'd be proud of how I turned out

People have reasons they do what they do
and i've made mistakes in my life
Man, I could tell you about a couple
Of good ones, even you would shake your head
And laugh....

I just want you to know that I love you dad
I still belong to you
And if it wasn't for you
I wouldn't have the family I have today..

So,dad I take my hat off to you and celebrate your life,
Just wish I'd had a chance to have known you
and could have shown you the love I have
And how funny I can be at times
I've heard i'm just like you..

If you could have known me, I think you would have loved me too.

Well, I better go for now
I'll stop by now and then
It's really quite here
And it's easy to talk to you
Just remember I do love you

Wish somehow you could know that I was here
